I'm 26, none of that is possible at this point, and college isn't a option as I flunked out of community college years ago, hell I had to take remedial classes to make it out of high school, it's all fucked up and a long story to be honest.
I'm gonna try to start my own small business and if that shits itself then I wouldn't mind going for HVAC, there's a school close to where I stay.

when i was in north dakota (special situation, to be sure) nearly every truck driver I knew was making 600-700$ per DAY after tax. nearly every diesel mechanic I knew was making 30$/hr minimum, more often quite a bit more than that. Nearly every skilled welder I knew was making between 2-4k per WEEK!. Solid machinists same story. Geologists were making 1/4 mil +, petroleum engineers were making 300-500k easy, and locals were making royalties like they were Saudi Kings.
If you are highly motivated, all those trades can be learned - at least in a basic sense, or hell maybe even a pretty advanced level, rather rapidly. Especially the truck driving.

Sorry but to be a geologist or an engineer (aside from software) a degree is a must, they won't even look at you if you don't have one.
That's the thing about degrees, they make your earning potential that much higher than you could ever get doing trades. Both working for someone or your own company you can charge a hell of a lot more for specialist design advice and blueprints than you can to machine a part

I never implied they didn't need a degree, I was just talking about oilfield $. Obviously the white collar jobs need a degree. It can be lucrative for people with degrees, but it's all relative. I've seen guys in the trades out-earn white collar by leaps and bounds, and of course I've seen the reverse. There's no hard and fast rule with it.

Yeah paying $500-900 a month in rent off site, having meals paid for, and getting a monthly transportation payment up to $800-1,300 a month (tax free) travelling on and off the man camps.
While working 2 weeks on and 1 week off. It's not bad as people think.
I know guys who lived in Rapid City SD and drove a few hours every couple of weeks to the camps and is paid $1,300 a month which covers all his gas and his car payment and rent.
And since it's a business expense by the company it's tax free for him. Since it's a cost of them operating the business and not technically income for the employee.
Then his paycheck comes and has zero expenses left while having full health insurance and 401k matching.
It's a god damn sweet deal.

You can make that if you get have enough connections to get an apprenticeship then in a few years move up to journeyman, but if you aren't the union boss's son-in-law good luck.
Maybe you can move to North Dakota or Alaska and make that money until oil takes another tumble and you lose your job and then burn through your savings looking for another job.
Maybe you can make mad money as an electrician/carpenter/sheetrock hanger until the housing market takes a downturn and you burn through your savings again leaving you with next to nothing until the next upturn in the housing market.
So when the market turns back up you're 5 years older with no savings left, starting it all over again, only to repeat the same cycle in 3-5 years until you hit your 50s when your body breaks down from constant hard work on your knees.
Good point, the safer bet is to sit on your ass in an air conditioned office and let the effects of muscular atrophy slowly erase your existence.

LANs, get any MS and other certification, there's lots you can do. As far as trades fiber optics and solar, these will grow in the coming years. Tech school was 2 years but I don't know these days and some are 2-year colleges.
If your not taking STEM (science, tech, engineering, math) or accounting don't bother going to college. You'll end up like sweetie there who can barely afford the shoe bills.

There are a lot of trades that really need people, and as one of the other replies to my comment noted, most people are completely blind to the opportunities that exist in tradeskills. If you are going to be an electrician, I would recommend against being a residential electrician (new construction or service- meaning you deal with homeowners); study and train to become a commercial electrician, which means you also do 3 phase and run conduit, so you generally work for businesses; or a lineman, where you work with high voltage. Another great overlooked field is machining. These days most milling is done via CNC, so you need to have an understanding of computers and it extremely helpful to have familiarity with solidworks or whatever the equivalent application from Autodesk is (can't think of it off the top of my head), as well as a CAM application for generating toolpaths for the machine you work with.
I'd have strong reservations about recommending going into trucking right now, drivers will be displaced within 15 years in favor of automation, and the trucks themselves will be displaced by newer transport technologies.
This really only scratches the surface of "blue collar" work. A lot of it has personal hazard, so as long as you are vigilant it is a great work environment. People look down on it at their own loss.

Yes, I meant computer skills in addition. I see fewer and fewer manual turret mills in operation every year, but I still feel anyone who wants to get into machining should learn on a turret mill first.
I'm sorry if i made it seem like you only need computer skills; the amount of technical knowledge you need as a machinist is extremely high, and quite a bit of it is specialized to the specific equipment you use.

Don't go truck driving, it will be automated in less than two decades if not one. Automated trucking is way more lucrative than personal car automation and big companies are already looking into it.
The business model for truckers is going to drastically change. Drivers will be needed around cities and more complex roadways but totally unnecessary for the long easy stretches. This will kill demand for drivers.

Trades are great but everyone always forgets the downsides like working in shit conditions, early hearing loss, constant minor bumps/bruises, no regular work location (good or bad your choice). The world definitely needs blue collar work but it is definitely not for everyone and going back to university at 23 I hope to never have to do it again once I'm done although I do love woodworking so I'll keep that ad a hobby.

This, trades are so damn overrated on reddit, sure using your hands to build stuff is a useful skill, sure school is cheaper, but most tradesmen don't earn 70k more like 50k unless they start a business or work heaps of overtime both of which are not for everyone. There is a pretty solid ceiling to your earnings. Also your knees and hips will start to hate you for being down on your knees in small places when you're 40 and be wishing you did some extra education so you could take a more comfortable job
I hate the bad rap they all give uni, STEM and medecine degrees (except maybe IT) are often REQUIRED to even work in any of those respective fields and protected by law, the earning cieling is far higher than trades on average.
There's pros and cons but as soon as someone says tradesman everyone brings out the rose coloured glasses

Education should be important, but the fact is that our universities are designed to help women at the expense of men, and foster anti-male attitudes. I was one of those cube dwellers for 30 years. Electrical engineer. By the end of my career I still had my knees and back and hips, was making $150K for about 20 hours/week actual "work". Driving around in my company car visiting my project sites and walking around in a hard hat talking with the guys sweating the hard physical stuff out in the sun. Half a dozen supporting techs and foremen/electricians, etc. asking me for solutions to various problems. I fucking loved it.
Trust me, all those "tough guys" when we were young with strong bodies in our 20's, all those guys doing the "real work", they liked to joke about and deride the "cube dwellers" like me. But by the time we were in our 50's and their bodies were broken you could see it in their eyes, they had a whole different attitude.

probably a big factor. Many were divorce raped and had half their pensions, 401K's stolen. Plus houses. Retirement before age 65 with medicare and SS was pretty much out of the question for these guys.
A majority of crew foremen I knew were "non-climbing" meaning they could no longer climb poles due to backs, knees, hips. Lots of replaced parts. It was rare to see a healthy crewman over age 50 with no physical problems. Many just worked thru the pain. Hell, one yard I worked in, all 8 crew foremen were basically disabled and could only use bucket trucks. Luckily my company was real good about finding them alternative, non-physical work like office jobs or inspector jobs. Probably half the engineering estimators that worked for me were former linemen.

One of my good friends does HVAC. He has got the best interview story I've ever heard. My buddy and two other guys applied for the position; his interviewer makes the mistake of telling him he had the first interview and that there were two interviewees left. He walks out of the office, sees two dudes sitting there. My buddy puts on a disappointed face and tells them "might as well go home guys, job has been filled. Walks out acting all bummed out. Other two dudes get up and leave.
The company calls my buddy back two hours later offering him the job.

Trades are great but everyone always forgets the downsides like working in shit conditions, early hearing loss, constant minor bumps/bruises, no regular work location (good or bad your choice). The world definitely needs blue collar work but it is definitely not for everyone and going back to university at 23 I hope to never have to do it again once I'm done although I do love woodworking so I'll keep that as a hobby.

You can't learn (at least in USA) to be a plumber in 1 year of tech school. It's a 4 year apprenticeship, with classes at night, and you have to work full (or almost full) time for that same 4 years before you can sit the test.
Following that, you have to work as a journeyman plumber for a master for another couple years before you can strike out on your own.
70K a year is kinda possible if union scale/big city, but it's a stretch cuz many 4th year students aren't getting anywhere near that.
The point is well put, that you can do well in trades, assuming you have the aptitude and your health is good

I'd love to get into HVAC but the research I've done shows that they only pay around 12 an hr while you're learning and it takes 2 years to complete the schooling, that's definitely not something I could do at this pont in my life.
That's probably working for other people, yeah. The neat thing about trades is the ability to translate it into your own small business. I've met plenty of other trades guy that run their own company and make plenty of scrilla. Takes time, but the payoff in the end can be good. Electricians seem to make quite a bit of $. HVAC guys definitely can too.

Wish I had known of Mark's path 12 or 13 years ago. Would've saved me a ton of money (tried for a history degree, had to drop out due to depression, being my Alzheimer's afflicted grandfathers primary caretaker, my parents going bankrupt, and other shit). Still have to pay the loans off though. I'm an EMT now, and I'm back in school to become a paramedic (6 more months, and I can take the registry exam {scares me shitless, tbh, i feel like a damned fraud at times, especially when working alongside medics that've been in field for 5 or 10 years}). Get that gold patch, bust my hump to pay off those debts, and then, I figure out my path from there.

Damn. My ex has $100,000 in student loan debt, has a Master's in BA, can't find a job to save her life (works for min wage in a doggy-day-care where she sleeps on a cot lol). I am a contractor, and make a very good living, buy lots of toys. Best part: I have ZERO debt, credit card/car payments, etc., and pay zero alimony. Life is good!

Meh, I want to become a doctor, even if I'm buried in debt the knowledge is worth it!
The way that women value college, or just titles in general, is insane. I asked a woman the other day whether it's more worthwhile to be working a trade, making 60-80K/year after like 2 years of training, and potentially owning your own business, or spending 6 years in college to work as a barista. Without even blinking she said college, and couldn't even come up with a reason why.
I have an advanced education myself and I certainly don't think college is the best/only way to go about a career. Women value status as everything.

I don't fully understand. 70k a year means a base wage of roughly 23 dollars an hour with 10-12 hours of OT per week. Isn't nearly every local cdl driving job like this, whether it's sysco (union) or some produce hauler? Then take machinists, which is roughly the math level of pre calc (not very demanding), a 60 credit certificate through a state tech school will allow you to either get into the cream of the crop (boeing or defense contractors that require clearence) or ordinary companies that pay low 20s per hour. Again meeting 70k if working OT every week. Journeyman paths are possible after going through the machinist tech school route, but that's above 70k, in nearly every case.
70k doesn't go far in a desirable city, because 950ish weekly net pay doesn't leave much after the following monthly costs:
900-1100 rent 350 utilities 460 roth ira 350 groceries 500 transportation and misc hobbies
Wow, that means saving at most 14000 a year. An ACL tear in bjj or a kiteboarding mishap and that savings is gone in a few months. I don't know how dudes can afford child support and online dating.
