I’ve been lurking on this subreddit for a while now and feel as though this community will be able to offer me valuable insight. I really respect the opinions in this forum and hope I’ll be able to reach a conclusion with help.

I (21, F) have been in an LTR with my high school sweetheart (23, M) for the past five years. A few times through out our relationship he has expressed interest in having sex with other women (which I naively brushed off as something that was ‘high school boy’ related and would go away over time) and has recently asked if we could explore an open relationship. He’s only been with me and his girlfriend before me which is why I can rationally understand why he feels the need to do this, but that doesn’t make it easier to process.

I’m a petite, feminine woman, that sometimes lets her emotions get the best of her but it’s definitely something I’m working on. I’ve recently started going to the gym, eating better, and taking care of my skin/hair/and nails while also finishing my nursing degree. Im a good cook and am generally organized. I’ve never been overweight or a slob, but I definitely wasn’t trying my absolute hardest up until a month or so ago.

He takes a lot of pride in his appearance and the way he carries himself and it very much shows. He’s also very career driven, ambitious, and confident. He always acts with my best interest at heart while not compromising his own values and happiness, all of which are qualities I require of my future husband. Sure we have had issues in the past, but so do most all young couples, especially before finding TRP/RPW. We’ve always been able to work through things together and come out stronger.

Our sex life definitely isn’t boring but medical circumstances made sex not an option for three weeks at the beginning of this month which took a toll on our intimacy. Aside from that, we have a rather active and kinky sex life.

When I asked him what exactly he wanted from this open relationship, he told me he just wanted the variety and the excitement of enticing women. He said his ideal situation would be for me to remain his girlfriend and have two plates on the side. No emotional connection or future seen with these girls, just sex and people to be a douchy chad with.

I love him and I truly believe he loves me but I’m unsure what to do or how to go about this. He essentially want to have his cake and eat it too because he knows I’m a good woman but feels as though this is something he /needs/ to do. I’m stuck because I do see myself spending the rest of my life with this man but am I just setting myself up for failure if I agree to this? It’s not something I object to morally, I would just rather not stick around only to have it blow up in my face. Am I setting myself up for plate status if I agree to this? He believes that it will allow him to open up to me on a deeper level and not harbor any regret or resentment in the future. That it will only strengthen our relationship. Does anyone think this could positively benefit our relationship? I feel as though it will but everything I read here and elsewhere makes me weary... I care about and love this man quite a bit and want to do everything in my power to create the best relationship possible for us.

I would take this time to further improve myself and the bond with my man with the intentions of returning to monogamy down the line. I have no plans or intentions to hook up with other men. If I decide this isn’t for me or my life goals, I would still focus on continuing to improve myself but would take a step back and probably go nun mode for a bit. Regardless, my self improvement and happiness remains consistently important.

Any insight is more than appreciated, I have an open mind and open ears!

TL;DR: Boyfriend of 5 years wants an open relationship for the quick exhilaration and variety but doesn’t want to lose me. Am I setting myself up for failure if I stay?
