How reliable is your intuition?

I feel its reliable when I listen, its when I haven't that I've regretted it. Have you read the gift of fear? It's all about intuition. I was in a position where I had to read men very quickly or else it could be potentially life or death scenarios and it saved me many times. Also just things about bfs not working out etc. Intuition is quiet. Intuition whispers. Intuition is in the body. We're trained out of listening to it when it's the best tool we have. Now that I live in a 'dangerous' city I use it even more. If something tells me not to go on that block I won't, I'll turn around in the middle of the street and walk the other way. After so many times I've stopped questioning it even if I don't know what could have happened the moments I didn't listen stick out so much that I have learned to trust it (still learning and unlearning all the social conditioning around not doing so, also part of experiencing trauma is disassociation so that is part of my recovery as well)

When I make a split decision without much thought and it seems as though I have no real justification for it other than it seems right, it has usually turned out well for me (or neutral). I realized I do it a lot more with business decisions than personal, but I have learned when I get that feeling feeling, I need to go with it. That is always a good and compelling feeling.

When I get a strong bad feeling about someone or something that seems irrational, I never ignore that. I can’t say for sure that I have avoided many dangerous or uncomfortable situations by bailing when I have these feelings, but I haven’t ever regretted doing so.

I’m going to copy a comment I made about this yesterday:

This “uh oh” feeling is exactly what kept me alive throughout years of getting in cars with strange men on the streets of Detroit as a homeless drug addicted prostitute.

The times I ignored it in the beginning ended in the men trying to beat, rob, and rape me and sometimes succeeding to where I learned that if I got that feeling, to flat out jump out of the car the first chance I got, without warning, even if he seemed perfectly nice otherwise.

Because the dudes that tried shit always seemed nice at first, right up until we were alone when he would then completely flip the script. Sometimes the only “sign” is that gut feeling and like I said, I firmly believe that was the only thing that kept me alive, whereas I have known many of my fellow sisters down there that were killed by these men. Often times the cases go unsolved.

So last time I trusted my intuition about a guy everything was revealed to be right. I just guessed whatever was going on with him based off solely on his behavior with me, and literally no other external pieces of info.

I feel amazing about that. And now I feel like it gives me ground to trust myself, and build a trustworthy relationship with myself.

It’s unreliable, but useful. I had a horrible gut feeling about one of my neighbors in an apartment complex, but nothing ever happened other than some truly bizarre conversations. Still, better safe than sorry. I think it’s better to avoid scary men than give them the benefit of the doubt. HVM get it, they know how scary the world is for women.

However, it’s easy for your “intuition” to be influenced by things like racism or infatuation. If I’m with a guy and I “just know” he’s the one for me I take a step back and tell myself that isn’t real and to take things slow.

In general I would say lean towards the “safe” option, or usually the option that puts distance between you and a man, regardless of if it’s your intuition or logic telling you to do it.

I rely on it maybe too much; it means I take very few risks in life and I often wonder about missed opportunities. But it definitely keeps me safe.

I can't rely on it when it comes to reading people and their intentions though, especially if I've just met them or don't know them well. People need to be clear and honest with me and not play games because I don't fuck with that. Not only is it confusing but it's stupid and boring. My intuition tells me to walk away from it.

My intuition fucked me over big time when I was 20 and fell head over heels for someone. I was convinced he was a wonderful person with strong morals and integrity, but I wasn't good enough for him. I believed that SO deeply for a decade of my life. Then he showed his true colours. Porn sick, deeply insecure and a potential cheater. He's the reason I struggle to trust my intuition with men, because now my intuition tells me they're all trash.

It's reliable— depending how you look at it. So sometimes I trusted my intuition only for the situation to turn sour but in hindsight, I realized that it happened to lead me to the next step. Trusting your intuition doesn't mean only sweet things will happen as a result but rather, the right thing (be it sweet or sour...but in all cases, the most necessary thing to happen).

For example, I knew a guy for a year and there was a lot of meaningful coincidences (synchronicity) between us. I thought these synchronicities meant it was god sent and a "sign". We ended up fizzling out and had no contact for a year (but on very good terms). Throughout this time, I just fantasized about him the entire time and kept thinking there was no way whatever happened between us was ordinary. Any time any other guy tried to date me, I just compared the very unique relationship I had with him and kept on thinking "what if". He consumed me and made it very hard for me to move on because I felt, my intuition, that there was something special and needed to talk to him again to fullfil "what was meant to be". I ended up contacting him again and we decided to date for the first time. After I dated him, I realized he wasn't what I fantasized and built in my head. Nevertheless, I think it was super necessary for me to have contacted and dated him so I wouldn't go into my future relationships with unresolved feelings for somebody else. There were other very crucial lessons I learnt from that relationship. In hindsight, I realized what was "meant to be" all along was not a relationship with him but super crucial lessons that I needed to pass and learn from. So yes, I trusted my intuition and we still didn't end up being together, but it was what needed to happen.

I also trusted my intuition where I knew it would be sour, and it did turn sour or knew it would be good and it was or knew I just needed to do it regardless if it's good or bad (such as the example I gave) simply because it was necessary.

I've recently discovered that when I'm with a man that I shouldn't be with, I get really jittery and almost start shivering. This is usually before I actually realize something is wrong, as I have a bad habit of romanticizing new men that aren't complete assholes.

Paying more attention to this and identifying the feeling quicker had helped he avoid various men that soon showed that had boundary problems or other issues.

For example, I was going out with this older man (8 yrs my senior), and I was completely romanticizing him. I genuinely thought he cared about me but he started asking me to pay on dates, and come over after I told him I wasn't comfortable with that. He also seemed to get off on my submissive demeanor. I remember sitting down with him to chat and I was just shivering and I had no idea why. I realized that I wasn't very attracted to him and ended it. I later noticed all the little manipulative things he said and did and came to a great realization of why my body was reacting that way.

Every time my intuition was right, and every time I ignored it. Well, actually that's tough because the times I did listen to it I'll never know for sure, because I noped out of the situation.

My intuition was never wrong, listening to it was the hard part. I had gotten into the habit of letting people talk me out of it.

As a kid I used to say things that sounded almost psychic because I was more accustomed to being open about it. Now I keep it to myself.

Yes. I had an off feeling about an apartment maintenance man. Looked up the local Megan's Law site. Turns out he was in the federal pen for rape in the 1990s.
