Unless you're both college freshmen with no cars and no money, that's absolutely unacceptable. Even then, I'd advise any college students reading this not to accept dates like this. Even "let's go to the dining hall after class and then go for a walk" is more effort than this. This is a man who either has literally no money, or he has a little bit of money and thinks that the fact that he has a paid off budget sedan and $3,000 in an IRA makes him a target for gold diggers.

As a woman, no.

I've invited a guy to hang out by a park near my house but only because he's not allowed to come to my place and we don't drive. And I told him we should meet in public first anyways.

It's low effort and plus, it's easy access for a potential rapist, especially if the park is big and/or isolated. If you were in NYC and at Central Park, I would say yes but in most cases, no.

Not for a first date, but if a man was like let’s go to the giant sunflower field or ride our bikes downtown and check out the annual flowers expertly planted everywhere or he suggests going on a mushroom hunt, I would be delighted. Only because flowers and mushrooms are some of my favorite things. It’s not hard to figure that out about me but I would be super impressed if a man picked up on that and suggested the date during the proper season. The bar is hella low...

There are tons of free things to do in my area that are very appealing to me, so I wouldn’t reject a man because he offered something fun to do just because it was free. I will reject a man for not having his finances in order and I definitely won’t meet a man somewhere for the first few dates if there aren’t many people there.

I did this once when I was in my early 20s and had just started dating as an adult. Well first of all it was AT NIGHT which made it creepy as hell. Second of all it was boring, awkward and quiet. Third of all, and this is the most important- he tried to get in my pants almost immediately! Sitting on the grass in a public park at night. Literally tried to un dress me and I had to tell him no multiple times.

Asside from low effort, there's no reliability that the park will have enough bystanders.

I think it's fair to tell a guy you prefer some place more public (there's probably a better way to phrase this.)

No. I had a guy ask me out on a walking date. I soon found out it was because he was working a minimum wage job and did not have a car since he could not afford a car. It was a date he wouldn't have to spend any money on.

Definitely not as a first date. Maybe a handful of dates in, if it was a lunch date and a walk in the park afterwards it could be cute provided it's a nice park.
