Lately, I've heard of some family friends who have been having marital issues and it is basically a husband and wife, who will be living together. The wife tells the husband about an oncoming overseas trip she will take with some friends, the husband is actually taken aback that she is telling him about her decision, instead of consulting him or asking him.

I actually take the husband's side. I believe it is just a sign of respect, when making a major decision like this that you don't tell (that you've already made your decision) your SO, especially your Captain, you ask and consult before you decide. Some people on the other side argue that this a) controlling, b) what if he says no and c) why even ask? I believe that this is also a matter of trust. If you really know your Captain and trust his judgement, you wouldn't have to fear a) and b). If he says no, there would actually be some good reasons why and you can discuss it- you know that the reasons will be good because you trust him.

This has happened before and I just don't see why you should tell, ask/consult first. Opinions?
