I wish there is more of this, to find out what happened. Obviously, by "rounding up", from part-time to full-time workers, created an appearance of a wage gap. The panel had no hourly data to compare. Don't part time workers usually pay less than full time jobs? In essence they were comparing apples to oranges, and not apples to apples.

I’m Australian and trust me, there is no “gender pay gap” going on in this country. It would be illegal to hire someone and pay them less based on their sex, ethnicity or religion. There are laws against such things. It’s that simple.

Long story short - men who work 12 hours a day take home more money than women who work 8 hours a day.

A few years ago Tesco (supermarket) in the UK came under fire for gender pay gap issues. The argument was that women working on the tills only got paid £12ph, whereas men working in the warehouses got paid £14ph.

Tesco returned the argument by saying "yes this is true. But also, the MEN who work on the tills only get paid £12ph, and the WOMEN who work in the warehouses get paid £14ph. Different wages for different jobs. Just because the majority of till workers happen to be female, and the majority of warehouse workers happen to be male has nothing to do with gender pay gaps. Both men and women can work either job"

What's ironic is that there is potentially a way to interpret the data to suggest bias towards men, but they didn't collect that data and instead relied on this weak argument. You can tell they expected zero pushback based on their arguments and their reaction.

They can't prove a bias towards men because they deliberately misrepresented the data. They had a single set of data that fell apart with literally to smallest amount of critical thinking. If you really are determined to find an interaction between gender and pay, you need to account for equivalent hourly pay, representation in the work force, distribution of hours, and differences in experience.

They would've had a much stronger case if they had that data because then they could try to argue there is a bias (assuming there is one for the sake of argument). And this is the sad part, it takes very little skill or effort to analyze the data if you have the right tools. Entry level statistics classes teach this in less than an hour. You can find a 15 minute video on YouTube walking you through it step by step with links to online tools to do it. There very well could've been a bias that they could've investigated further. But they can't, because they didn't collect the data, because they don't care about the reality of the situation. They only care about their agenda. That is much more depressing than anything else in this video.

Give them family leave one month per year and a week's paid sick leave every time of their month. And yet we're still struggling with it at a policy level. I don't necessarily think it's our inability to understand the concept. It seems like the bigger issue is that some of our objectivity is compromised by a strong desire for a specific answer. When I was in college this exact scenario came up. A girl did a presentation about the gender pay gap in engineering but based all the information on yearly incomes in the FIELD of engineering.

It did not account for hours worked, it did not even account for different roles within the field of engineering.

It was along the lines of " the average income of a man in the field of engineering is £65,000 while the average for a woman is £35,000".

When asked if this was for the same job she answered with no, it's just a generalised number.

There was no data showing the amount of woman Vs men. If there's, for example, 15,000 men and 3,000 woman then statistically more of those higher paying jobs will be done by men.

I'm all for feminism. But making an arguement where there isn't one just hurts the cause. It's still a patriarchal world and you're not going to get anywhere by spouting nonsense that can be detailed by a few questions.

If you were to put forward an arguement about men being more likely to be offered promotions with proof maybe I'd listen, I could believe that and I'd want that to change. But this? This is bullshit and too many people try to push it.

As the senator said, I can't think of a man who would be happy that his female co-workers were being paid less for doing the same job. If it were happening, we'd know.

My sister is a surgeon. According to their own numbers, female surgeons get paid 30% less than male surgeons. And that is for a number of factors: - male surgeons tend to form a 'boys club' that will exclude women from activities (golfing/socializing), where alot of networking and promotions happen - female surgeons tend to be sent the more 'problematic' patients that need more talking/convincing/bed side assistance, and something simple (e.g. gall bladder removal) will go to the male surgeon (spoiler, doctors don't get paid for talking to patients. Those can be accounted for as lost earnings, because if you spend an hour talking to someone, thats time you could have spent operating) - the gender pay gap does exist, bit it is not prominent. Men negotiate harder, and are more assertive when it comes to money, and most people look upon that as being strong and manly, whereas women are just looked upon as bitches when they do this. There are other reasons for this (some justified, e.g. women will typically take on maternal roles and may stay home with babies), but to say it outright doesn't exist is naive. Also, there are alot of older people who do the hiring, and the myth that a woman's work is worth less, or that they are more risky (they will go on mat leaves till, they will stay home when kids are sick, etc) or that they are just not as good as male employees, still very much persists.
