I live on the wet coast, so minimal snow. That being said two degrees and raining feels colder to me than twenty below. I have made it through Winnipeg and Montreal winters in this getup though. I don't like being cold. I'm also an older student, so money is tight. Thrift stores and discount stores for now, alas.

Knee length wool coats. Feminine, can be dressed up and down, warm. Necessity. Classic styling so it can be worn for years. Mine is a gorgeous charcoal grey so wearable outside of deep winter without looking too harsh, and also differentiates you from the mass of people in black. I bought mine at one of the discount department stores, sort of like tj maxx but amazing quality. I think I paid $160 about 5 years ago, wear it for probably 6 months, so very good cost per wear. Also, surprisingly rain resistant, so long as it is not Vancouver style winter rain.

Colourful leather gloves. Keep a pair in the jacket pockets so you always have them. I'm a thrift shopper, and found a red pair for $2, tags still on, and a cashmere lined, unbelievably butter soft tan pair for about $5.

Multicolored pashmina scarves. The varied coloured means you can wear it with so many things and look perfectly pulled together. I find they give a nicer line than the huge chunky knit infinity scarves so popular right now. Tuck the ends into your armpits for extra warmth by eliminating neck air vents. Brr.

Cashmere sweaters. I live in these from October to May. Quite thin, but layer nicely to avoid bulk. Cheap here alas won't do. They pill and fall apart so quickly. Thrift stores again FTW.

Non-technical fleece lined leggings are easy to find, and won't be nearly as costly as technical active wear long johns.

Down vest that can tuck under the nice jacket. Extra downy warmth without the ugly puffer coat look.

Surprisingly, leather jackets with a thin lining (not even quilted) are great for transition temperatures.

Thick high quality hiking socks (wigwam, smart wool, etc.) With the felted wool and foil insoles. Warm happy feet when paired with nice leather riding boots. Spend the money here :)

I recently discovered buying shoes on craigslist. I bought two pairs of boots that didn't quite fit the original owner from a very well regarded brand for quality, practicality, and style (Frye's) that retail for close to $400 for less than $80 each. They too are a classic style, and I intend on years of use. Both over 2 years now. I use snow seal, as I'm hard on them, but they keep my feet dry. Salt stains are the worst, but stay on top of it, and they do just fine. The socks keep them warm. Make sure they don't have a heel (hazardous on ice!) They make ladylike boots that aren't hooker boots :) and make sure they is lots of room for your toes to wiggle around. If your toes are cramped, there will not be enough warm bold from your core reaching them, and they will freeze. Blood flow is key here :)

Knit toques! Find a cute colourful one that doesn't look like you borrowed it from your man. Wool, not acrylic, with a built in fleece liner or an extra fleece lined headband worn underneath. Tight weave so it cuts the wind.

Also, just a traveler for hot drinks to keep you warm on your commute. Plus those packs of chemical handwarmers. And a feminine coloured umbrella, not a standard basic black one.

I find many women revert to sportswear when it gets cold. Though some is cute, I find it hard to be feminine in sportswear. Time and a place, but I'm not a fan of the active wear casual look for regular use. Stay dry, keep your core warm and the rest takes care of itself.

I like Sorel boots for winter- I think they are wayyy cuter than uggs (although I have a pair of those too, but prefer the sorels). Check out the joan of arctic. Snow bunny chic! Get good socks too, like smartwool or something made for skiing.

I also highly recommend investing in some under armour cold gear. When it gets really cold I wear them under my top and jeans, and it helps keep me insulated.

If you are having a particularly sensitive day, maybe keep some of those air-activated hand warmers around? It's so nice to keep them in your pocket and be able to get some much needed warmth whenever you want. But they are expensive, so not an every day solution.

The warmest winter coats are fur or down filled. They are so warm due to their natural wool! There are very nice designs: flat boots, wedges, stacked heels (probably not a good option for every day walking), ankle boots, tall boots. Their leather is also treated for water resistance. They are not cheap. But sometimes quality does cost more. For layers I prefer cashmere and wool, those materials are thinner but warmer. They tend to be pricey but I usually buy them heavily discounted during summer :)

I just bought this coat in the grey color. Super warm, great hood, fleece cuffs and pocket lining. It is nipped in at the waist and has tabs to further nip it in if needed. You can order swatches of the fabric if you want to see/feel how it is. I love that it isn't shiny and has a bit of texture to it because of the heathering. If you sign up for their emails you get a 25% of coupon and they often have sales. I bought mine when it was 30% off.

I wore it to work today and actually got stopped 3 times for people to ask me where I bought it. And Lands End is great about quality and they guarantee their products basically for life. So if your coat tears or falls apart in a year they will replace it..... even 10 years down the line.

I could not possibly be happier with my winter coat. I know for a fact it will stand up to my harsh Wisconsin winters.

Good options:

-faux (or real) fur

-leather with microfiber padding

-compressed felt or tweed

And make it thigh-high or halfway down the thigh with tight buttoning or a sash at the waist, to encompass and show off your figure. Sports jackets, mackintoshes or leather jackets are all good, warm options.

I walk a mile one way to/from work several times a week, rain, shine, or snow, AND I have to wear nice business clothes for my job (they are very strict about appearance where I work), so I understand your issue! It got reeeeeeally cold here last winter, so I had to figure out lots of ways to keep myself warm while still looking work-appropriate. I have a brown wool trench-style coat (from Gap, I think) that falls to about the knee. It's belted and flared a bit below the waist, giving it a very feminine shape. I just got a new one that's not wool, but waterproof (London Fog ftw) and has this soft, fuzzy zip-out lining that's soooo nice. It's pretty warm as it is, but sometimes I need a little more, which is where layers come in. Layering traps warm air between all the layers, which can actually keep you warmer than one giant coat! Plus, if you layer smartly, you don't have to look too bulky. Adding an attractive scarf helps, and you can even wrap it over your face/head if the need arises. If you like knitting, you can make your own in every colour for really cheap! A good fleece jacket underneath, as well as maybe adding a hoodie when it's really cold, can do wonders to keep you toasty. Underarmour makes thermal long-sleeved t-shirts and leggings which can be worn under clothes and keep you really, really warm. The leggings look just like regular opaque black leggings, so you can wear them as normal (like under a skirt or dress!) and be extra warm. You can even layer tights or yoga capris under your pants if it's really cold! I got some leather gloves from Target that look super nice, and they're reeeeally warm. As far as boots, Zappos has some good options. Mine are black, fuzzy inside, and zip up to about mid-calf. They're not the most attractive boots in the world, but they're warm and cute enough. I always like to bring a change of shoes for once I get to where I'm going--I have a purse just large enough to fit them, and wrap them in a grocery bag to keep the dirt contained. When I get to work, the boots go in the grocery bag and the shoes go on my feet! That keeps me from dripping melty snow off my boots all day long or having wet feet (my boots aren't exactly waterproof). I can even wear cute sandals or heels at work during the dead of winter if I bring a change of shoes! Multiple pairs of socks can make a big difference too, without being too conspicuous. If it's desperately cold/wet, I cut plastic grocery bags into "socks" and layer them between my actual socks. It feels weird, but no one can see them and they keep your feet warm and dry! Keeping an extra pair of socks in your purse is always a good idea, too. One of the biggest problems for me last year was when the snow started melting and the sidewalk became a sea of icy water (which is a frostbite hazard if your boots aren't waterproof), so any way you can keep your feet dry, no matter how strange, will be pretty important!

Ski socks and tall leather boots (as in horseriding kind) to keep feet and calves warm
Tights or long johns if it's ultra cold under tight pants
Multiple layers in the torso like cotton camis or even thin thermal t-shirts under my regular clothes
Lots of knitted wear, the air near you is a great insulator
Double gloves and double scarves almost needed to be a thing last year
Belted puffer coats are a thing and some look pretty cute too
I do extra makeup and manis in the winter to keep up the girly. Also most cool weather clothes are in pink/purple or have bows to help me look and feel less androgynous

Do any of you ladies have tried and true ways to make shoes less slippery? I'm a little bit tired of fearing for my life when walking down the icy streets whenever I want to wear a prettier (impractical) pair of shoes.

I'm a huge fan of layering. I've got reynaud's syndrome so my fingers and toes can turn completely blue. Get some lightweight long underwear. Maybe they're not cute but nobody can see them anyway and you can even wear them under tighter jeans. I've found that with several lighter weight layers up top I can stay just as warm as I can with a bulky coat. Just make sure that your coat is water and wind proof and you'll stay plenty warm. - and wool socks! You can even find them in cute prints now.

I get cold easily but can't give up skirts, so I invested in a good pair of thermal leggings from Mountain Equipment Co-op (Not sure what the American equivalent is). I tend to wear those with tights on top so I can still wear skirts and dresses even when it's a blizzard out. Or you can even wear them under jeans!
