What does your BEAUTY routine look like?

I've just discovered Asian skincare products and am still in the process of tweaking my routine (I'm excited to hear from some of the other ladies on this for tips!), but one thing I will swear by is RETINOL.

I had thought, in my 20s, that I was too young for the really hardcore anti-aging stuff. Boy was I was wrong. It is expensive but so so so worth it. Retinol is wonderful and has completely changed my skin. I also use it on my arms where I have bumps and scars/discoloration from keratosis pilaris, and it's been clearing those up too.

Another thing I use every morning and love is a Vitamin C serum. I feel like it really brightens up my complexion, and it's supposed to help fade scars and hyperpigmentation as well. And of course, sunscreen!

Morning:

gym
shower and wash my face with CeraVe SA Renewing Cleanser
CeraVe eye cream
prescription topical lotion
Makeup (IT Cosmetics CC cream, Clarins instant light concealer under the eyes, mascara and maybe some brow pencil if I feel like it)
blow dry hair and run a curling iron or flat iron through it (necessary for me to control frizz)

from stepping in the shower to walking out the door is around 40 minutes

Night:

use an oil based cleanser or balm to remove makeup/sunscreen
wash face with a prescription wash
CeraVe eye cream again
wait 20-30 minutes then apply topical chemical exfoliant (alternate between bha and aha)
apply a moisturizer right before bed (giving the topical at least 30 minutes to work) if needed; either CeraVe PM or cold pressed Argan oil.

I would totally recommend finding a good dermatologist, whom you like, and discussing any issues. I mentioned that anti-aging and reducing some pigmentation were my big concerns and he gave me one prescription and recommended some very reasonably priced and effective products to address those concerns. I also did a lot of my own research to understand how different products work, beautypedia is a really great resource for skin care reviews and will keep you from blowing a lot of money on things that aren't proven to be clinically effective.

For hair, I would definitely recommend watching YouTube tutorials. Find someone with a similar hair texture and watch them use a curling iron a few times. If you really like their style, try some of the products that work for them and see if that helps.

Skincare:

AM--I just splash water on my face and combine ELF's bb cream (spf 20) and Aveeno Daily Moisturizer spf 15 or use Revision Intellishade SPF 45 tinted moisturizer or I just moisturize and use foundation (see below). If I'm going to be in a lot of sun, I double up with the SPF 50 Shiseido.

PM--Cleanse and remove makeup with Philosophy's Purity cleanser, moisturize with the Aveeno. If anyone has any eye creams they love, I'm in the market for one!

Makeup:

If I wear foundation, it's Urban Decay Naked Skin applied with the Real Techniques beauty blender knock off (which I freaking love). Concealer is Nars Radiant creamy concealer applied with a stippling brush (I have dark circles from hell). Blush rotates. I lightly contour with bronzer in the summer, just to bring warmth. I use Benefit's Hoola or a matte MAC shade. For eyebrows I rotate between NYX powder duo and Benefit Speed Brow (I'm lazy). My eye and lip looks vary based on the day. At minimum, I usually have on some type of base, undereye concealer, blush, and mascara. I feel more pulled together.

Teeth:

I brush 2x/day and floss/rinse with mouthwash daily.

Diet:

I stick to 1200-ish calories a day (logged in MFP) and try to minimize dairy and added sugar. I cook most of my meals, and we go out ~once every week or two weeks to dinner or lunch.

Exercise:

I'm terrible at sticking to it, but I go for at least one fast paced long (45 min) walk with the dog everyday, sometimes more. This is absolutely the weakest part of my routine.

Hair:

My hair is the bane of my existence. My current routine is washing it every three days (unless I work out, then it's "after I work out"). I shampoo and condition with It's a 10. I use this protein treatment in between. I use It's a 10 leave in always. When I'm going to heat style, I use a CHI heat protectant. Otherwise, I like Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Cream or Not Your Mother's Salt Spray (smells like coconuts, is amazing). I curl my hair with a flat iron almost all the time. I'm trying to cut back on the heat styling to help it grow out (it's at armpit length) but it looks crappy curly IMO.

I got all the It's a 10 stuff on super sale. Shea Moisture Moisture Retention Shampoo is my HG shampoo, and I'm switching back. I'm also going to try their Jamaican castor oil line's scalp oil and deep conditioning treatment when I run out my current stuff.

Does your hair even hold a curl? My best friend has straight hair and literally cannot hold a curl from a curling iron. That could be your problem. But honestly, if you can just wash and go with your hair, you should live it up. I would pay a small fortune for that ability :)

*shower - I use an Israeli herbal soap for skin and Revlon shampoo (or clarifying shampoo) and Dove nourishing oil conditioner + a Korean body towel

*take off makeup

*Cerave in the tub

*Finacea or PocketDerm depending on how I'm feeling

*Amlactin lotion on skin

*Steroid cream for eczema

Morning:

Smoothie full of nutritious ingredients.
Some fitness activity (gym/class/yoga/rock climbing).
Shower, wash my body with Dr. Bromner's and my face with Cetaphil then use a BHA (Paula's Choice) for exfoliation followed by a light moisturizer from Clinque.
I shampoo/condition my hair 2-3 times a week, the rest of the time I just rinse it with water.
My body moisturizer is coconut oil.
I do not blow-dry or otherwise heat style my long hair unless it's for a special occasion. This is the best thing you can do for your hair to keep it healthy. There is no product that can repair (they can only mask) damage.

Night:

Long walk/hike or bike ride.
Relaxing tea
Remove any makeup and wash my face same as I did in the morning except I use a nighttime anti-aging cream afterwards, also from Clinique after my BHA dries.

Hair:

3x a week I wash it, though I shower usually every day.
It's dyed auburn (it's naturally a dark blonde), though I've thought about going a much lighter blonde. I hesitate because I know it would damage my hair.
Shampoo & Condish - Dove Dry Oil. It smells lovely. Sometimes I will pre-condition with coconut oil, then wash it out. Usually I will just let it air dry into its natural waves. For the longest time I would straighten it with a flat iron, as I considered that more "neat" and clean looking, but I always got a ton more compliments with my natural wavy hair than straight, so I've been going pretty natural lately. It's been a while since I've cut it, so it's about bra-strap length now. I usually leave it down, parted on the side. Sometimes it's half up/half down, or braided in some way. During martial arts class I do a side braid.

Skin:

I have very light, porcelain skin. I have moles too that annoy me, but aren't that big of a deal.
AM - Splash with water. Sunscreen - Biore Aqua Rich SPF50, from Japan on Amazon. It is the best sunscreen ever - very light and watery, absorbs right away and I can't tell it's there! After sunscreen I moisturize with Alba Botanica Hawaiian Oil-Free Moisturizer, Aloe & Green Tea. It's also very light. Then I do some very light, natural-looking makeup. Concealer under eyes and around chin & nose, and wherever my skin is looking uneven. No foundation/base. Little bit of blush so I look less ghostly, mascara. Maybe a little eyeshadow if I'm feeling it but it's kind of a moot point since I have hooded eyes and you can't really see it that much.
PM - Get rid of makeup with removal wipes.. I think I've been using Simple lately. Then I use a witch hazel toner on my face, stridex pads on my back to prevent any bacne (finally found something that worked!). If I'm taking a shower, then I'll use a Green Tea Antioxidant Cleanser to wash my face. Right now I'm using Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle to wash my body, Summer's Eve wash for the ladybits. After my shower I'll use a vitamin c serum on my face, and moisturize with sweet almond oil. For my body, I might use a body lotion, or lately I've been trying out coconut oil to see if that will help get rid of my arm bumps.

I use Cerave's sunblock (I think it's 30SPF) for my body. It's ok. Doesn't sink in that well, though, I probably won't buy it again.

Diet:

I also try to stick to about 1200cals/day unless I have martial arts class (3x week) and then I usually eat a bit more, if I am good and remember to bring extra food to work.

I minimize my dairy (pretty much just in coffee, or rarely some cheese). I really don't drink as much water as I should.. I'm working on it. I wish it tasted better. I do try to watch my sugar as well. If I do eat some, it's usually from fruit or from the honey in my tea, or the very rare treat. Like today, I had a soy chai.. full of sugar but so tasty. I wish they had a skinny version!

Exercise:

Aikido 3x week. Long walks around the local park. I should try to get into running again.

Now that I've heard you ladies talking about Retinol it's made me curious! Does it really make that much of a difference? Can you get it OTC?

I'll start from when I get home from work:

Evening routine - Daily:
* Eye make up remover and make-up removing face wipes
* Shower. I was my hair every day, but I co-wash (my hair is wavy/curly naturally, and very thick.) I only shampoo maybe 2-3 times per week.
* In shower, I comb my fingers through my hair while the conditioner sits to get rid of any tangles. Before washing it out I run a wide-tooth comb through it too.
* After shower, lotion all over body.
* Wash face (Burt's Bees Soap Bark & Chamomile)
* Face lotion (Yes to Cucumbers night cream)
* Eye cream (Yes to Cucumbers eye cream)
* French braid my hair into pigtails for the night and let it air dry that way. Even though my hair is naturally curly, this #1 doesn't frizz out my hair as I sleep, and #2 promotes nicer curls, in my opinion. Took me forever to find a good YouTube video how-to to french braid, though!
* Dental hygiene: brush teeth, floss, scrub tongue, mouth wash
* Lightly exfoliate lips, followed by thin layer of Vaseline

Evening routine - 2-3x per week:
* Intense exfoliate before shower--lady region, underarms, face. Rinse off in shower. (I have always been sensitive to ingrown hairs--exfoliating regularly has been a LIFE CHANGER.)
* TendSkin on underarms and lady area to prevent ingrowns (I alternate this with exfoliation--one day exfoliate, one day TendSkin, etc)
* Shampoo before conditioner
* Toner between washing face/using face lotion

Evening routine - 1x per week:
* Shave (arms and legs--I had laser hair removal on my legs so I don't have much growth anymore)
* Shave face (be gone, peach fuzz!) with Shiseido Facial Razor
* Face masque after face wash, before toner

Morning routine - Daily:
* Brush teeth and scrub tongue first thing
* I don't wash my face in the morning. I just throw on some moisturizer (Yes to Carrots SPF 15 daily moisturizer)
* Eye cream (Yes to Grapefruit eye cream)
* SPF 30 sunscreen on face, chest, shoulders, back of neck. More (arms and/or legs) depending on planned sun exposure and outfit
* Undo French braid and put in a little hair styling cream. (Slick it on my curls, pulling them down a little, then crunching them back up.) I should note that when I French braid the pigtails, I part my hair down the middle so it's even. But when I undo them, I rock a side-part
* Make up (see below)
* After breakfast/coffee, I use mouthwash again

Make up routine - Daily (going for the natural look--I'm Caucasian, blue eyes, light brown/sun kissed hair):
* Sheer face powder (Tinted foundation settles into my fine lines anymore)
* Light pink blush
* Eyelid primer
* Eyeshadow powder: champagne-colored base, light brown shimmer in crease, slightly darker brown matte at edges
* Liquid brown eyeliner into subtle cat-eye
* Light pink/nude matte lipstick
* No mascara or eyebrow pencil--I get eyebrows/eyelashes tinted

Professional routine - every 2 weeks:
* manicure
* eyebrow threading
* eyebrow tinting (light brown)

Professional routine - every 4 weeks:
* wax lady area and underarms
* eyelash tinting (black)
* pedicure

Professional routine - every 8-12 weeks:
* hair trim
* facial

TL;DR For your curls I would recommend French braiding into pigtails after showering/when hair is wet, let it dry that way. Then once you undo the curls in the morning, put some styling cream in it. (Or depending, maybe use styling cream beforehand?)
