Yesterday, I had an hour or so to kill so I decided to go to a coffee shop to read. The place was starting to get pretty crowded. I made eye contact with a guy in line while I was sitting down. Mistakenly, I didn't smile or anything. A few minutes later, he asked to share my table.

I got pretty nervous because I definitely thought he was cute. I just responded "Yes, for sure" and went back to my reading. A table right next to us then opened up before he sat down so he moved over there.

Once I left, I was thinking of all the things I could have said to start a little conversation- things like "wow, didn't realize how crowded it is!" or "I've been saving the seat for you".

In this situation, should I have just continued reading and leave him to initiate conversation? Or should I have said something more welcoming?

We made eye contact once more before I left.

Again silly question, but I regretted how I handled the situation (wishing I wasn't so nervous and tried to be more welcoming). What should I have done?
