On a related note, MGM and WB’s Tomb Raider has essentially finished its run. The solid Alicia Vikander actioner earned just $57.2m domestic but a rousing $215.3m overseas for a decent $272.5m global cume on a $94m budget. For all of you out there who got excited when Steven Spielberg mentioned the possibility of a female Indiana Jones or get excited when someone mentions the possibility of a female James Bond, well, where the heck were you?

I don't think that feminists want female success so much, primarily they want to destroy male success. They've already succeeded in the UK with Dr. Who, and from what I've seen that's probably going to kill it.

It's not enough that women win, men must lose, that's pretty much the feminist motto.

'Action' films are stories that appeal to boys and young men largely. It makes as about much sense to gender swap the likes of Pride and Prejudice to my mind. I don't think you'd have hoards of men flocking to see that. The movies that make money depend on these tropes as they are because that's what audiences want. Cinema didn't begin in the 21st century.

We don't new women James Bond, we need a fresh, brand spanking new woman character who makes her own name. That's what people want to see and the fact that the hundreds of execs can't see that there's where the money's at astounds me.

Jesus Christ, just grab an actress, slap a catchy name to her, and make a really original plot and a nice backstory and you're good. No need to make it sing to the likes of Indiana Jones. People will flock on its own. Then pump out 10 movies and make it impact culture and more women films will follow.

Makes me mad that nothing will change.

Funny thing is that female leads actually seem to do a lot better in the video game industry than they do in the movie industry, despite the fact that not only does the movie industry has a far bigger female demographic than the gaming industry but that feminism has essentially been relentless on their attacks against it and vilification of all things male and nerdy.

huh. i wonder what would the feminist crowd says about this.

usually new IP franchise have a much better story writing, because the people making the new movie basically gambling the future of the franchise on the first installment. that is why i thoroughly enjoyed atomic blonde.

the problem being, in most (if not all) gender swapped pre-existing IP franchise, they sell the gender swap as the movie main selling point (example: ghostbusters). that makes for a really piss poor storyline.

Something important to not overlook here: video games adapted into movies typically do not perform exceptionally well. Even the very popular AAA games. So part of this could not only be failing to appeal to the audience you want in women but to a wider audience that just doesn't watch video game based films much.

The reality is that we are all wired to admire male action heros. That's why female action hero movies rarely do as well as expected.

There have been a couple of exceptions over the years but these are rare. Usually if it's a female action hero lead, you know it's going to be lame. It's entertainment. Not social re engineering.

Honestly guys, this stuff gets overblown.

How many James Bond movies are there, now? Who cares if one of them stars a woman? I'm sure that would set the stage for the 'Bond is a code name' theory and allow for many more diverse actors down the line.

This is hardly something worth complaining about.
