Who is giving out 'free condoms' and why? Most likely it is an effort to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted disease and is funded as preventative medicine. Is there some specific medical issue that tampons prevent?
[β]Mortys_Plumbus 26 points27 points28 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
My college has them for free. Of course, I think free-bleeding is kind of nasty but free condoms do benefit the woman as well.

Hey do you know birth control is men's work and should be done and paid by men always!

[β]doklaan 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Except, of course, it's discrimination against women for the government to allow insurers to not cover birth control.
[β]konichiwaaaaaa 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Women can use rags, cups, and wash them, doesn't cost anything except the initial cost and washing. Just saying. I haven't seen reusable condoms...
All those pads and tampons are terrible for the environment.
[β]Mortys_Plumbus 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Fair point; the environment usually a liberal talking point as well so their heads would probably explode.

It is beneficial to understanding where people are coming from on this issue to think of tampons, etc. kind of like toilet paper rather than condoms (which is a dumbshit comparison).

It's the same nonsense as the complaints about the government paying for Viagra and not birth control for women. The free government provided Viagara is ONLY paid for by the VA and DOD for members of the military, their dependents and retirees all of whom ALSO qualify for free birth control.
Viagra is also a viable medicine for heart conditions; it's use for erectile dysfunction was discovered as a surprising side effect that became the most famous use of the drug.

I don't know about others, but I also pay for my toilet paper myself.
[β]Grungethefallen 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
In the UK You pay for toilet paper, but also have to pay for sanitary products that are NECESSARY , we cannot help we bleed but its ok for men to receive free condoms, don't you think this discriminatory factor is wrong?
[β]zgembo1337 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I have no idea where people get free condoms, I have to buy those too, but can't women get them too?
[β]Grungethefallen 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Women and men can get them but its still not the point of the thread.
[β]konichiwaaaaaa 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It's one point of the thread. It points out that condoms benefit both men and women. In fact, it benefits women more.
[β]Grungethefallen 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think that sanitary products are more important than condoms.
[β]TheHawk71 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Really? I can tell you child support for 18 to 22 years costs more than sanitary products over the same time frame. Whoβs to say whatβs more βimportantβ? What a silly argument.
[β]Grungethefallen 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Comparisons between birth control and periods are dumb because you cannot help that you bleed but its ok to set free condoms out , How about you dont have sex , men can refrain from sex but its a mans world so oh well we cannot have our necessary rights because men are ignorant to the factor .
[β]konichiwaaaaaa 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
You cannot help that you bleed
I cannot help that I infect others or get infected by STDs.
How about you don't have sex?
How about you don't eat?
Men can refrain from sex
It's a man's world [...] men are ignorant
What does that even mean? Also you are saying it as if that's a bad thing? Can you even imagine for one second what would happen if we lived in your hypothetical woman's world?
[women's] necessary rights
So that's what feminism is about these days? Free tampons paid for by men?
[β]8nother_throw8way 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Actually you can, by not having sex or not having safe sex.
That's a ridiculous counter argument. Sex is not necessary to stay alive, food of course is.
Can men and women really refrain from sex? Why should they?
Here I absolutely agree with you. We have condoms, and other options available, why not enjoy sex? And yes, women can equally refrain from sex. It shouldn't just be placed on men to refrain.
I don't agree with what Grungethefallen wrote at all. Calling men ignorant and name calling the whole gender is a terribly ineffective and a wrong thing to do. But I have no idea what you mean by her "hypothetical woman's world." All she is saying is that she wants free tampons, so that's not a lot of information on what her world would be like.
So I mainly responded cause it pisses me off that you wrote "free tampons paid for by men". It wouldn't be paid for by men, it would be paid for by society. Which also includes women and women should have benefits from their own tax money as well.
BUT I overall I actually don't think free tampons is really that necessary. I think if you're so poor you have food stamps that you should be able to include tampons as a food stamps purchase. But otherwise, it's not a big (this is coming from a woman who does live under the poverty line). I think the promotion of free condoms is way more important and it does benefit men and women pretty equally.
refrain from sex
I still don't get why one would that. I thought we were past puritan beliefs that sex is bad.
I have no idea what you mean by her "hypothetical woman's world."
She said "it's a man's world" which I understood as "the patriarchy". The opposite of a patriarchy is a matriarchy, and I strongly believe that a matriarchy is worse than a patriarchy, if such a thing exists.
So I mainly responded cause it pisses me off that you wrote "free tampons paid for by men".
Yeah, this was meant to be thought provoking. This discussion is based on the concept of free stuff, but as you've mentioned here:
It wouldn't be paid for by men, it would be paid for by society. Which also includes women and women should have benefits from their own tax money as well.
free really means the tax payers are financing it. But you are wrong. It would be paid for by men, because women pay much fewer taxes than men overall, almost 3x less after the age of 40, which you cannot argue is do to interrupting their professional lives for their family. Here is an interesting link on the subject. Women receive more than they give according to that same source.

First off using a source from a site called Judgy Bitch doesn't invoke a lot of trust in it's journalism skills. The way they write and how they are consistently stating their opinions and throwing the word feminists around, as if they can speak for all of them is just really really bad journalism. Good journalism stays objective and just state facts.
I don't know if the stats are correct. But if that is true it makes sense in the regards that most millionaires and billionaires are men, so in the grande scheme of things when you bring in all those incredibly rich men and consider all the stay at home moms it's going to be an out of whack average. With the statement about women costing more than they contribute. I'm assuming this is due to all the government assistance needed for poor and single moms. The government having to aid them through pregnancy and welfare would be quiet expensive. Healthcare cost more for women than men as well.
But the women who make the same amount of money you do pay the same in taxes. It's not like women get a different amount to pay than men just because we're women. We pay based on what we earn and what we can deduct. Last I looked, my vagina wasn't on the deduction list. So it's not about men paying for women. It's about the rick paying for the poor.

You probably missed the link to the original study done by the government of New Zealand and the Victoria University of Wellington in the first paragraph. The figures are extracted from the paper that was published.
Well now you are making another point (which, if originally intended by the author of the tweet, I did not get until now):
the rich should pay for the poor.
If by that you mean that the rich should buy hygiene products for the poor, then yes, absolutely, I agree 100 %. It is an essential need for all humans to have a good health, and that goes through hygiene (e.g. brushing your teeth) and preventing disease to spread, for instance through menstrual blood.
In practice, the rich is already buying those hygiene products for the poor, but with money.
However, now it feels like we've shifted a lot from the original discussion. In my understanding, the author of the tweet didn't refer to wealth but compared a contraceptive and a hygienic product in general, because she seems to think condoms benefit "boys" only. I don't even understand how these can be compared, they belong to different categories. To me this is like comparing tissues with face masks.

I know that Planned Parenthood has free condoms. It's to make them available to those who, for whatever reason, can't or won't buy them, to help curb STDs and unplanned pregnancies.

[β]Eastuss 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The actual fuck? Your personal hygiene is not the society's business. Else we would give toilet paper for free and other hygiene stuff like toothpaste, distribute vitamin compliment to make everyone's immune system stronger, ect... Not give away freaking tampon for free.
If you really cared about the spread of disease you would stop use tampon but you would use premenstrual cups. Actually cheaper on the long run and less infection risky.
Get consistent in your own logic.

Because options exist to not by tampons - get a moon cup and stop complaining, or keep buying tampons, your choice
Well it isn't about buying either really its about the factor that they dont make this free for us women , its a medical reason.
[β]boringcarpets 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It's not a medical reason, menstruation is a biological function. Again, no one, particularly men, get anything free for biological functions, and it's not a right. And, again, the cost of tampons is optional. And, again, you don't pay to menstruate
I fight for both rights to be fair, men should get stuff for their functions but so do women and yes you do it costs women 18,000 + in their lifetime.
[β]boringcarpets 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Tampons aren't mandatory, plenty of things cost in a lifetime, you don't pay to menstruate, you pay for a product you've chosen to buy - other options exist, it doesn't cost that much unless you choose to pay that much - no one else should have to pay for your choices
[β]duhhhh 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[β]Grungethefallen -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's stupid, you wouldn't bleed less frequently, don't you know anything about a womens periods , if not I suggest you refrain from sex because you should know this before even having sex with a woman or did your school fail you in that subject matter ? because women CANNOT HELP THAT THEY BLEED EVERY MONTH, birth control can stop periods and can make you less frequently but the whole thing of NATURALNESS OF PERIODS IS LIKE NATURALNESS OF HAVING SEX BUT YOU CAN REFRAIN FROM SEX BUT NOT BLEEDING , SO DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST!
[β]duhhhh 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Apparently you don't know pregnant women don't get periods. I wouldn't talk down to others if you don't understand basic biology.
[β]Grungethefallen 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I do know that and you know that I understand basic bioligy and that birth control doesn't automatically mean ur pregnant and also that women do bleed every month, not every woman but they do and you know men are ignorant to womans rights automatically by birth they should when they reach the period age get sanitary products for free because its not something you choose

Most common STDs effect women worse than men.
The same goes for abortions.
Pregnancy and childbirth obviously.
While MRAs might argue that having unwanted children can effect men more than women (or just differently), certainly neither gender gets a free pass.
Condoms at my university were freely available in the women's only room (as well as a few other locations).

Their problem with free condoms is that it doesn't benefit women exclusively.
[β]Grungethefallen 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Its not that, its more of men are more sexistly ignorant in providing the nessarities for a woman that DOES NOT CHOOSE TO BLEED, but its ok to provide condoms where as IT IS A CHOICE TO HAVE SEX.
[β]boringcarpets 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
The condoms are for both men and women
Just because sanitary hygiene items don't benefit you doesn't mean we don't deserve the right to them with or without paying however why should we pay for something that we can't help, its like saying put nothing on a bleeding leg but well cost you 200 pound per year to bandage it up for you, spending approximately Β£18,000 + in a lifetime on sanitary products, but a leg that bleeds doesn't cost that much.
You a) are not very smart and b) don't know what a "right" is
A. I dont give a crap what you think , b. I have a opinion and fighting for rights and i'd say men on this post are misogynistic .

[β]TracyMorganFreeman 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link
That's not how "afford" works.
There are more girls who menstruate than sexually active couples, but that's not the same as sexual encounters.
But use some numbers!
The average American 15 and older has sex 60 times a year. That's roughly 250 million Americans times 60, but divided by two since sex is two people and it's not like each partner is a wearing a condom for each encounter, so 7.5 billion condoms per year.
There are about 75 million women of reproductive age in the US, and let's assume that on average they are regular with a full 28 day cycle(so 13 cycles a year) and menses lasts 4-8 days, and tampons are to be changed every 4-8 hours
So the largest number of tampons that would have to be used would be changing every 4 hours(6 per day) and for 8 days, 13 times a year, times 75 million women, or 46.8 billion tampons.
The fewest would be changing every 8 hours for only 4 days per cycle, or 11.7 billion tampons.
Condoms per unit are about twice the cost of tampons from my cursory googling.
So unless most women are mostly light in both length and severity of their cycles, and even when assuming every sexual encounter involves a condom, condoms are cheaper to provide. It's possible to afford one and not the other.
[β]HessiBabe97[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

[β]CatManDontDo 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[β]HessiBabe97[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
How?
[β]TracyMorganFreeman 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
DOn't get me wrong I'm not saying we simply shouldn't provide them, but that their reasoning given to do so is specious.
Even if providing them both would cost the same, if you can only afford to provide one, providing condoms helps 2 people per use as well.
Now personally my own politics informs the idea that people should be responsible for their own lives-but voluntary charity is perfectly appropriate-but if we're going to be giving out things on economic bases, then we should probably be handing out diva cups, not tampons.
[β]armaadi 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The issue with providing them is that there's a crap ton of different feminine products out there for the crap ton of different PMS symptoms women experience. If you provide free heavy pads, well, that won't sit well with women who prefer tampons or lighter pads. Extrapolate that out to all the different types of women and their sensitivity to various materials. It would be better if there were a non-regulated market out their for tampons/pads, so that they could be bought at a cheap price and with various types for the wide array of preferences women have.
Like someone else posted, this would be like providing free toilet paper to everyone since everyone shits. If you did, most-likely, there'd only be a couple choices, it would be a heavy burden on the tax payer, and the quality would be shit. What if you are a woman that got one of the BCs that stop your period? Would it be fair to force you to pay for other women's feminine products? No?
The only people who really advocate for this crap seem to be people who don't really pay taxes and are oblivious about the real world. The only women I'd advocate to give free feminine products to are to women in countries where they don't have the economy or infrastructure to even buy these products, and then, I'd only advocate it if I weren't compelled by force to give them products.
[β]TracyMorganFreeman 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Another thing overlooked in the TP example is women use more because they wipe after urinating as well.
Agreed, although one could also make the argument to instead try to spur investment in such an infrastructure to help the local economy.
A lot of donated goods actually hurt locally developing economies that rely on producing basic things like shoes and clothing. This may not be the case with something disposable like tampons though.
[β]armaadi 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Very true. I'm more for that than merely donating goods, but I do feel a sense of empathy for people living in places without all the shit I have and take for granted.

Funny thing was that when I was in college the push was to get free condoms in the hands of the women as it was believed that they would benefit more than the men they engaged in sex with. Also, the consoles weren't distributed by a government agency funded by taxpayers, they were funded by a school group and distributed by the health department at the school, resident directors, and other group activities.
[β]toyz-z 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
dont some women's bathrooms do have free period products?
[β]Grungethefallen -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Nope unfortunately not, only in some schools if you see the school nurse and even then in the adult world and shops don't do them free , unfortunately for us women the necessities are taken the rights away from us as men see it as "not necessary and should pay" , but they don't see it if they was a woman who had periods every month and poor women and women from countries who do not have any money or jail
What you don't realize is that 99.9 % of condoms are paid for by people. You seem to think everybody gets them for free.
What rights were taken away? Ones you didn't have in the first place? That no one has anywhere? Tampons are unnecessary as alternatives exist
Oh so the fact that yeah there are other products but at the same time you dont find that we need the necessarities when we bleed, so you expect us to pay for something we cannot help, thats dumb crap, their are women from poorer countries who cannot afford to even by bread or water, their are women in prisons who are deined the right of sanitary products, women shouldn't have to pay to bleed , something they cannot help .
I expect you to pay for the things that cost money that you chose to pay for.
You can carp on about women from third world countries all you want but you're transparent, you're literally just using them to further your own personal issue, not out of care for them, not altruistic in the slightest, hoping to pull the emotional angle. But how much do you really know about those women and their situations? e.g. what are those women's views on the matter? What solutions do they use if not tampons bought and paid for? You act as if they're in suffering but the reality isn't that at all, I have family in what is classed as a third world nation, and believe you me there are no mud huts, squatting and squalor.
Again though, and either your reading comprehension is very low or you're being willfully ignorant - you don't pay to bleed, you pay for the luxury of the product. alternatives exist, the cost argument is not an argument. And, again, no one forces women to buy tampons. Further to that, the cost of tampons isn't even prohibitively expensive.
So, you could choose something that: doesn't interfere with the biology and ph and functions of the vagina, doesn't leave fibres, has no risk of toxic shock, no bleaches or chemicals, is better for the environment and costs far less than a years worth of tampons.... but no, you just want free stuff and to complain about something you could change.
[β]ExpendableOne 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't understand why a woman could complain about free condoms. Condoms are literally the least enjoyable form of contraception for men. They offer the least amount of friction/contact for men. How many women actually enjoy female condoms or IUDs? How many women would actually feel safe from STD's while relying on the pill? How many women would even accept to use a female condom, even if it was freely given to them? Most wouldn't and just demand that a man wear a male condom instead(and men would do it, because they just want to have sex and will do whatever women demand of them for it). Traditional condoms benefit women as much, if not more, then they benefit men.

If we want to fund personal hygiene, there are a freaking lot of things to fund before their tampon. Premenstrual cups are cheaper and better on almost every aspects btw.
An equivalent would be give away female condoms for free.
[β]konichiwaaaaaa 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I don't see how tampons and condoms are connected?
One is to avoid STIs, STDs and babies FOR BOTH PARTNERS, the other is a convenience for the modern woman who has more frequent and longer periods than women had in the past. When they had it, women would use absorbent, often reusable, materials. Source
Plus, as a well-off straight man with a boring life, I have never been given free condoms. I'm guessing those are given to the unfortunate or people at risk or in some places I don't frequent.
College students can get free condoms generally, and many free clinics will hand them out if you go in and ask.
I see the free birth control and tampon thing in much the same light because I just look at it as people wanting free shit.
Because condoms are free in some places and countries however sex is a choice by partners, yes it lowers STD rates but having a period is different you cannot control it , its more natural than having sex because of the factor that sex yes its human instinct and natural too but women cant help periods whearas sex can wait , I think condoms should be free but also dont you think that tampax and pads should be free for women since we don't choose our bodies and what happens to our bodies? where as sex is voulentary as periods are involentary
[β]konichiwaaaaaa 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Neither should be free. The argument for condoms is to stop the spread of diseases to the population due to transmission by those who can't afford it.
[β]Grungethefallen -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
why shouldn't tampons and pads be free, women don't choose periods, that is pathetic point right their and your just as bad as the males who are against womens rights. Yeah condoms stop spread of dieases but for poor people and women who cannot afford sanitry pads have to bleed out on their clothes and ect and you think thats fair ?!
As if bleeding on clothes is the only alternative. Dolt
[β]boringcarpets 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
Every time I see an argument for free tampons or the like, it always baffles me that, as a man, even I know things like the moon cup exists, which means no risk of toxic shock and the "cost" is far reduced - if they don't want to spend money on tampons they literally don't have to.
The idea of free or reduced price or untaxed tampons is one the dumbest gripes they have because alternatives exist but, as always, why should they have to change their behaviour when they can throw tantrums for everything else to change
[β]Grungethefallen -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
As a woman your comment is very sexist just because you don't get periods and understand them, women wear tampons genuinely if they bleed heavy and pads don't work as well but whatever method of female hygiene they use should be free because men don't get periods doesn't mean that it should be wrong for a women to have her rights that she cannot help that she bleeds, some women are not as rich and should be allowed to have these nessasiaries, why should we pay for what we cannot help its just like if you men bled every month then you should be treated the same? no of course not but look whos the sexist ones.
[β]boringcarpets 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

true but its a sanitary product that should be free,
Where is that true anywhere? There are plenty of things I want free, including essentials, but that's not really an argument. "Should" because you feel like it. Again, and I think you're still missing the point - you don't have to pay for tampons, it's a choice to pay for them, not only do some companies and organisations gives them out, but they're not the only solution to the problem.
well men dont have periods do they so thats why,
Not an argument really is it? Prove it. Prove that the reason tampons cost money is because men don't have periods and not because of the cost of manufacture or the fact that tampons aren't a nationalised service, even in countries with nationalised healthcare. Prove that it isn't a free market with many options. Prove that a decision was made by men specifically to make women pay for tampons and give men something free
women have to pay for something they cant help but men get free condoms, convenience i think not.
Condoms benefit....ready for it?... both men and women. You know they're to prevent the spread of STDs, right? The free condoms are given to young people of both sexes - see, that right there is called equality, special treatment, free stuff and "gibs me dat" is entitlement and yet more evidence that people like yourself don't actually believe in equality only special treatment.
Oh, and thanks for your comments throughout this thread, loons and idiots like yourself are not only entertaining but show people the dumb arguments that are running the narrative, emotional and illogical, and backing supremacy not equality

It is beneficial to understanding where people are coming from on this issue to think of tampons, etc. kind of like toilet paper rather than condoms (which is a dumbshit comparison).
