Women of this sub, don't you feel insulted when standards are lowered because you have a vagina?

I don't really feel insulted, but I feel it's unfair for me to get a job position over a man with better qualifications. I'm an engineering student and girls in Mechanical get internships/co-op way faster than the guys, even if they have lower grades or less experience. It does benefit me a lot and I am happy I have it easier, but it does irk me that some people are given opportunities over people who are way more qualified.

I don't comment much on this sub, just upvote and lurk. The main reason I visit this sub is because I'm sick and tired of people ignoring male sexual assault victims. It's disgusting and there should be some change. I also want stricter privacy laws, like Germany's, so someone accused of sexual assault's life isn't ruined because of just an accusation. A sexual assault accusation is something that men can almost never recover from.

Not sure insulted is the right word. Frankly, I simply consider the lowered standards bullshit. Either you need the normal standard or you don't. If you need the normal standard, then don't make a bullshit lower standard to make people feel better about themselves.

I would respect a woman who went into the military and refused to be able to meet anything less than the male standard, for example.

I, personally, am quite insulted. As a child of a military family, whenever i see anything about women being underrepresented in the military, calling for the lowering of physical standards or more women in active combat roles, it pisses me off. Physical fitness in the military is a requirement. If you are not fit enough to carry hundreds of pounds while running long distances, you are not qualified. Period. To lower the standards for women takes away from the badass women who could measure up to the men, and allows others good reason to be biased against them, because who knows if they got in on their own merit or just because they needed more women. This goes for affirmative action and diversity hires as well. I pride myself on being smart, well-reasoned and skilled at what i do. To overlook all that I've accomplished and simply hire me because of my genitals is insulting. To assume that i couldnt get the job if that wasn't done for me is insulting. And to say that all of this is somehow actually benefitting women and not implying that they are inferior and need a helping hand is just ludicrous.

I'm not insulted, I'm mad, I have never expected to be held to a different standard than any one else. It does make me very angry that any other woman does. I am for equality, not double standards, man bashing, and this bullshit feminism. I follow this sub because I have a man in my life that I love and two grown sons. I don't like the way things are going for men in this country.

On the flip side, it makes me refuse to respect my female work peers because I KNOW they got in with fewer requirements and an Affirmative Action advantage. If you're a woman, and you're new here, I keep you at 3 arm's lengths until you PROVE you're competent and not just a vagina hire. I don't contract with these women until they've completed at least one "moderate difficulty contract".

It's difficult to apply this question to my own professional life, but in general, yes, I feel insulted and very irritated when I read about something being made easier for women because we're women.

If EVERYONE were failing to meet certain standards then I would understand modifying them, but lowering them just to cater to a particular group of people? All that tells me is they're pandering and performing lip service when they're supposed to be professionals training other professionals. I don't care what's between your legs. Either you can do the job, nail the test, or perform well in the military, or you CAN'T. Isn't that how it should be for everyone?

This type of pandering is the exact opposite of empowerment to me. They see it as a "victory" and a dispel of "glass cielings", well, I see it as a setback. Sure, you get the position or the test score or the uniform, but how are you somehow just as competent, reliable and skilled as the other people that worked hard to prove their worth on their own?

Look. I understand that discrimination towards anyone can happen because of their sex or ethnicity or upbringing, I'm hardly naive about that, but let's not pretend that lowering standards is the solution to ending it.

Yes, I hate it.

Getting a job is a great example: My SO can't get just any job he applies for but if I were to apply for the same job I would get chosen over him just because I am female. This is wrong, my SO can do 90% of these jobs better than me but I would be picked over him because I am female, it's just wrong and makes me not want to work.

Humm.. I guess I do feel slightly insulted. I come from the view of a tech background but I think I feel more insulted when employers see me as an easy quota. I want to be merited for my skills not my vagina and if there is a man more qualified I hope they do pick him rather than myself. That sounds foolish and I do desperately need the money but it's not only insulting for me (who doesn't want to be the token girl) but to men who need the job as much as I do. In Scotland I have quite a masculine name and you'd be surprised how many times I've been given an interview then see the employer's eyebrows rise when they realise I'm female. I know it sounds stupid but I once turned down a job when I realised that the company was going to employ me as I was female. Me and another guy were down to the last two and we decided to chat about our skills etc. He was way more qualified than I was by a mile and he said he overheard the employer saying it would look good for the company to have a female profile. I was disgusted and turned the opportunity down (so did he apparently) but that makes me sound all white knight now doesn't it. Doh...

I figure that anybody out in the world doing their best and satisfying their own standards shouldn't get hung up either way on what other people expect of them. If I know I've done a good job, nobody can take that from me. If I know I've done a substandard job, outside adulation won't make me feel better about it.

Haven't gotten anything close to that experience. But I'm about to start an internship in tech, hopefully I still won't have to experience any disadvantage or any advantage over others because of my gender.

Yes. I hate that modern day feminists are fighting for "equality", but they actually are just fighting for women to be given an easier time. It's not fair to men, it's insulting to women, and overall just pathetic.

Could you try asking this in a less offensive way? Your question embeds an accusation that the reason for lower standards for women is the existence of their sexual organs.

How about a neutral question:

Women of this sub, how do you feel about lower standards for women versus men for the same job (for example, a lesser number of push ups required in the military)?
