This isn't a rights issue, this is a smart business practice considering the incessant clamoring about the lack of females in the tech industry. By making a public statement that they are actively recruiting qualified female candidates they insulate themselves against claims "they aren't doing enough" to promote WIT (Women In Technology).

Since I'm on the subject, however, there is a book called "Gender & Technology: A Reader" that I had to read as a student at the University of Washington. I would highly recommend it because you cannot make an informed argument until you are informed.

That happens the other way around too. I'm in the field of psychology (dominated by women) and I can get pretty much any job I apply for that I'm qualified for, and even some that I'm not just because I'm a guy. They're desperate for men in my field and will hire me before a woman, even if only because the staff for a given company is 95% women (which happens in my field).

I'm not saying its right, but it happens both ways all the time. It's probably less important for computer science though because you're not really working with clients or anyone that should be affected by your gender. Eh whatever.

They want women in the field, this is how they get them. There are other fields that need men. It just diversifies your work force and possibly creates better cohesion

This is a smart move to protect yourself against repercussions from the feminist movement. I mean, no one wants to be told to "shut the fuck up"

What's wrong with the bottom female students? They don't get a place in your institution based on their merits? They have a vagina and that seems to be a very important qualification.

I have no problem with this. Google absolutely should hire the "top female students."

The problem is when companies want the "bottom female students" over the "top male students."
