The typical woman in America has one or more of the following: wears fake nails, fake hair, fake breast, fake buttocks, fake lips, fake tan (fake skin complexion), make up on so fake looks. And yet their insanity is accepted. Read on below.

I'm so bored with the attack helicopter joke. The whole premise of the joke is that you can claim absolutely anything as your gender, and you somehow you still repeat the same joke thats been done in countless threads and youtube videos about SJWs

[–]Cadmium_Mellow-32 points 9 years ago [recovered] (8 children) | Copy Link

Really? Literally any time something even remotely related to gender comes up some "too cool to be politically correct" dude writes some variation of it.

Also nice downvoting me for not liking what I'm saying. Not a fan of free speech?

[–]uncleslam7 19 points20 points21 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

You didn't get arrested did you? That's all the protection the first amendment affords you. Everyone else is free to not give a shit what you say

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And free speech doesn't mean shit on a website.

[–]Cadmium_Mellow0 points 9 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

then why do you care if university students want to have safe spaces? That's the point I was making. The double standards in this echo chamber are fucking ridiculous.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Just wanting to clarify since I see it said sometimes but only in some subreddits, isn't the downvote button only supposed to be used on comments that don't contribute to discussion? Its not supposed to be used just cause you don't like or agree with the comment. Even if the user posts something unpopular, if it provokes discussion it should be kept and held up. Right? I thought this was site wide rule. Maybe only certain subreddits do that.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, not literally any time.

[–]Cespur-29 points 9 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

In literally every SJW related thread there's always at least one of you that goes "I'm a ****kin and blabla". It really is overdone.

[–]Cadmium_Mellow-4 points 9 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Good luck in this sub, luckily there are a few subreddits not full of super edgy teenagers.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

super edgy teenager

TIL being 23yo still counts as being a teenager.

Also not liking something ≠ being edgy.

[–]Zerwas 39 points40 points41 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck yes! This should become the norm and not the exception. Going to college should aim for broadening your intellectual horizon and growing as a person through learning about the world.

Safe spaces and trigger warnings do the opposite.

Still waiting for some lunatics insulting the dean of that University as a sexist/racist/homophobic etc. though.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I'm still surprised this needs to be said... What's going on? Safe spaces, trigger warnings... I thought this was just fringe stuff we made fun of on the Internet, not something Universities need to address. I'm 28... What's happening with the youth?!

[–]DennisFiasco 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Wtf is a safe place

[–]TommyInBahamas10 points 9 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

It's where people can have their ideals uncontested despite how stupid they may be. I went to a community college in Capitol Hill, Seattle. Every door is labeled with "safe space" except you can walk 50 feet from the school and get mugged by the heroin addicts down the street. You're not physically safe.

[–]LawnCareJesus 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're not physically safe.

Well as long as the heroin addicts respect your personal beliefs while they're mugging you, that's what's important.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good question!

[–]Colored_Infinity 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dude its bad all over colleges. Computing forever on YouTube has been reading letters students have sent him from around the world. Social just is a disease and thankfully places like this are giving a vaccine.

[–]ForumPointsRdumb 41 points42 points43 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It's like no one ever talked trash to them throughout all of their young childhood. How is that even possible? I could understand a little if they were home-schooled, but not all these trigger-happy people are home-schooled.

[+]datajunkie9382 -31 points-30 points-29 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Is it possible that they had so much trash talked to them that they are finely fed up with "having a sense of humor."

[–]SweatpantsMusic 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No. No it is not.

[–]datajunkie9382 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[+][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nah, I'm white and growing up I got made fun of for my haircut a bunch of times and called a fag for listening to radio head, isn't that crazy! I had a bad childhood but now it's all working out for me.

These people with their gender and sexual identities and different race, get over it; then life will be better.

Just try to be a cog in the wheel!

(Oh wait you can't because our country is structured to make sure you lose)

[–]datajunkie9382 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]thatto 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]devilinblue22 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think safe spaces as they were originally intended were a fine idea. A rape victim or whatever has a room to go vent at without someone telling them this or that.

What it has become though. The attempted expansion of safe spaces to include and pacify while campuses is disgusting.

[–]RedditIsDumb4You 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's Chicago. People die in the streets every day there. They don't have time for silly shit like safe spaces when the space is literally not safe for anyone.

[–]QWERTY36 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm a bit late... But my school is a shithole when it comes to SJWs and safe spaces. I hate that fact.

Please explain?

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Go read through some random threads in there, it really doesn't need to be explained.

I read through one, they were all just circlejerking à la the_donald, and I called them out for blatantly misrepresenting Trump + being incredibly disingenuous/illogical in their posts. Boom. Banned.

P.S. I've done the same in the_donald and been banned. They're the same subreddit just opposite sides of the political spectrum.

P.P.S actually, the_donald banned me for this "Anyone who thinks Donald has a chance unless he learns to shut the fuck up is delusional."

More academic support to convince D students that they're B+ students. Way more technology in classrooms so that every handout has to also be uploaded to the class website which students subsequently ignore. And the cafeteria has three kinds of almond milk where the Mountain Dew used to be.

Oh fuck off.

I'm so sick of hearing people complain about this "problem". It's nonexistent. I attend grad school at a university that could be argued to be one of the most liberal campuses/cities in the country and there are no safe spaces or anything like what the right-winged media loves to bitch about.

This whining about university campuses being overrun by nonexistent SJWs needs to stop.

Edit: looks like I triggered some red pillers in their safe space.

This all started with regards to Yale and the safe space shit storm that originated with them. This is by no means all colleges, but it has sprouted at Yale, Stanford, U of Minnesota, and many other colleges. This is just UChicago getting ahead of all this before they have their own Yale moment on their campus.

The people who attend safe space meetings already learned that, repeatedly, the hard way. All they want is a place they can vent their frustration or constructively discuss problems they face daily. Why do you have a problem with that? This site seems like your safe space to complain about it.

[–]nukedduck 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Yes and thats fine to meet with people who share your views, but people who try to protest or silence guest speakers at their university simply because they might have conflicting viewpoints on a controversial subject is unwise.

[+]TheSleeperWakes -25 points-24 points-23 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

That's not what a safe space is, so I'm not sure how it applies to my comment. But I think protesting is a fine way to react to speakers you disagree with anyway.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or students could sit quietly like a decent person and listen to the speaker and attempt to understand his/her point of view. College students tend to think they have a handle on complex topics when, in reality, they know almost nothing about the vast majority of topics. Most young people, including myself when I was in college, think they know everything, however, the Dunning-Kruger effect appears to be particularly strong with this generation of students. By the time you reach 30, you'll likely have had an "oh shit" moment where you realize you know very little about the majority of topics.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or they could just not attend the event and let those who like the speaker, enjoy the speaker.

[–]nukedduck 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yea I guess protesting is fine. Or you could ignore it and stay in dorm and study.

[+]TheSleeperWakes -18 points-17 points-16 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Which is how you could react to marginalized students holding safe space meetings...

[–]nukedduck 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It is how I react. I just don't think safe spaces are very good at preparing you for the real world. They are good for venting your frustration with like minded people though. There is good and bad effects to them.

[–]TheSleeperWakes -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You react to people wanting safe spaces by complaining about them on the internet. It seems like reddit is your safe space & I'm sure you're feeling validated by seeing your responses upvoted. That's fine. But safe spaces are just meetings or areas where people can go to feel safe & accepted, & being upset about that is as dumb as wanting to make the entire university a safe space.

[–]nukedduck 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]TheSleeperWakes -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The comparison being made is between students, in the past, prohibiting new ideas & identities (atheism, homosexuality); & students now identifying things that have been carried on for too long already (racism, sexism) as undesirable. It's a nice mental gymnastic maneuver but the analogy is pretty weak.

[–]WitteringRaven 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think your confused or maybe just a little behind because safe spaces might have started off as your saying a meeting of like minded people in a safe space to say want they well without hearing opposing views. Which if it was held in a non-public area i would be fine with, or just a meeting in public area i wouldn't protest it, but it's not. I'm not sure if it's the people who started the safe space movement or if other people came and co-opted it but it's no longer just a meeting, they are trying to make it campus wide. Does your Young Americans for Liberty chapter want to hold an event in support of the second amendment too bad that makes people feel "unsafe" and "uncomfortable". This is the reason people are against safe spaces now and if you want more examples i have plenty.

[–]unseencs 112 points113 points114 points 9 years ago* (35 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure if I understand these safe spaces. I mean you aren't suppose to disagree with someone or anything yet if you do something someone doesn't like they can call a vote to have you removed? Wouldn't calling the vote also violate the safe space?

Isn't the point of a multicultural center to welcome people of all cultures? What disgusted me the most was that this was an on campus building and the school was allowing rhetoric like this that only causes more segregation between cultures.

[–]Cayou 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, the idea in its original form makes sense. For people who want to talk about something very intimate that's usually hard to talk about because of how some of their peers might react, it's a good idea to have a place where they can speak freely and know they won't be judged. A "safe space" used to be a place where you could share, say, your story as a victim of homophobia without some idiot telling you "well maybe you wouldn't get called a faggot if you stopped acting like a faggot in public".

I'm a white male and I think we'll be fine guys. We can persevere through the horrible trigger that is other people being terrified of us. I mean, we're not a bunch of pussies who have to bitch and cry about other people not liking us, right? Because that would make us pussies for suuuure

The fact that you don't see the hypocrisy is just fucking butter on the popcorn lol

[–]angry_cabbie 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Riiiiiight.

I mean, if you think "threatening violence over a difference of thought" counts as "not liking" someone, then maybe you're part of the problem, y'know?

I mean, if you are for people being allowed to hurl verbal abuse at a group, while being protected themselves from similar abuse, maybe you could take your white ass down to the KKK and sign up.

If you think the (valid) concepts of safe spaces and trigger warnings would never be abused to stifle speech, thought, or beliefs, I would love to know drugs you're on to give such a rose-tinted view of the human species. Power tends to corrupt, remember?

I mean, have you gone out of your echo chambers to look into what's going on, or are you just content to mock people from your high horse?

Here, in case you have a moment of self-realization, these articles look like they be written from a point of view outside what you're capable of seeing: The Atlantic, Daily News, Urban Dictionary, Mediashift, and The Telegraph.

Bonus points: The modern concept of "safe spaces" from colleges gets used to segregate people based on what they look like.

But, hey, whatevs. Your life is great, so everybody that's remotely like you must be having a great life, too, right?

The idea of a temporary safe space where individuals can retreat from deing with these things for a few minutes or an hour is fine. But the idea has been siezed upon to refer to the growing tendency in academic institutions to suppress views which might be offensive, even while in the classroom. It is this issue which people are complaining about, but as is par for the internet nobody has their terminology right.

But while conservatives often frame campus free speech as a left-versus-right issue, the dispute is often within the left.

“Historically, the left has been much more protective of academic freedom than the right, particularly in the university context,” said Geoffrey R. Stone, a University of Chicago law professor who specializes in free speech issues. Conservatives “suddenly became the champions of free speech, which I find is a bit ironic, but the left is divided.”

As a moderate leftist, I do find it odd to have the right-wing having my back on this.

The fact is, regressives of any political persuasion should not be telling us what to do, right or left.

[–]johnchapel 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]sdjksjdks 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The only reason the left has championed free speech in an academic setting for so long is because they needed it to gain power. Now that they have it, they say "free speech" is a clueless white male's slogan.

PPD is becoming something of a catch all as a result of the very PC modding culture thst exists on reddit. It's not what the sub was created for, but it's an understandable shift when users are being censored so heavily in other areas of reddit

[–]Crummyrocket69 64 points65 points66 points 9 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

In this case I don't think they meant pussy as in a vagina I think they mean pussy as in SJWs.

[–]Kilenaitor 139 points140 points141 points 9 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

But that's not at all the intent of the sub. Pussy is referring to vagina. The whole point of the sub is to be a sister to /r/pussypass which is women getting away with things because of their gender. This sub is supposed to be instances of that except the woman doesn't end up getting away with it. This just seems anti-SWJ/PC stuff which, fine, but it doesn't constitute good quality on this sub. Move it to /r/KotakuInAction or something equivalent.

[–]Cavhind 57 points58 points59 points 9 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Gosh I wonder why a sub about posting women having bad experiences has turned out to hate women.

[–]TheRedGerund 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Because safe spaces are the offspring of radical feminism.

[–]NukaColaCaps 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

I judge a group on their actions more than anything else. It doesn't really matter that the dictionary.com definition says "equal rights for men and women." If it was just about that, you could even call me a feminist. But it's not about that and it hasn't been for a long while.

It's by far more than the extremist members. Because even moderate ones believe in a narrative that just isn't true. Also, the moderate ones almost never call out the nutters on their behavior. They are complacent.

Just on Reddit and mostly with men.

[+][deleted] -8 points-7 points-6 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Still means that.

Verysmart, enlightened boys on Reddit have just decided that the thinking of radical third wave feminists is the undeniable true form of feminism, so therefore it also must have no redeemable qualities.

You're insane.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The safe space and trigger shit serves only to let people censor others and exert control. It's the gun control of free speech - if you cannot ban a right, regulate it into meaninglessness.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

[deleted]

What is this?

[–]johnchapel 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There is no such thing as a trigger. Its an orwellian tactic to apply a violent tone to "Im upset about something" and shift blame onto the offender. Let me explain:

If a fat girl sees a thin girl and gets upset about it, the situation is that a fat girl is insecure about her weight, and is jealous when she sees the thin girl. in that description, (also in reality) the fat girl is responsible for her own feelings and reactions. The thin girl simply existed.

Now, if a fat girl sees a thin girl, and is "triggered" by it, the situation is that this fat girl has a condition that can best be described as induced anxiety, and what makes her condition 'flare up' is seeing thin girls, so thin girls are a 'trigger'. This shifts the fault from the fat girl onto the thin girl FOR simply existing, and the fat girl is no longer responsible for her feelings and reactions. The thin girl and her existence are responsible for fatties feelings.

Can we all see how this mentality on a widely socially accepted scale is downright terrifyingly dangerous?

[–]Michichael 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Anyone with a sense of self responsibility can see that. The problem is that there's been a consistent, coincidentally concerted effort through multiple channels to drive people away from a concept of self-responsibility to one of deferred responsibility.

It's not the suicide bomber's fault, it's the religion. It's not the school shooter's fault, it's the gun. It's not the criminal's fault, it's society's. It's not your fault you're fat - it's the restaurant's fault for making such big portions! It's not the kid's fault he got an F - it's the teacher's fault!

The same thing was attempted back during prohibition's spin up - history is repeating itself. It's not the alcoholic's fault, it's the alcohol - so let's ban it.

The entire concept that people aren't responsible for their own actions, that someone else is always to blame, is a comforting concept for the insecure and the weak of will. It's consistently being plyed by CEO's and politicians alike - not through some giant conspiracy, but simply as a side effect of the mass broadcasting way that modern technology enables such messages to be distributed.

At the end of the day people are generally stupid, and they generally want all of life's woes to be someone elses fault. In history, this used to be redirected to religion - it's not your fault, it's god's fault. Then countries - it's not your fault, it's this other country's fault. Then science - it's not your fault, it's genetic and out of your control! Any power struggle always boils down to that concept - it's not your fault. You're a victim of circumstance.

People latch onto isolated examples that truly do have an impact and claim that it's the cause of their own miseries - "that kid has a medical disorder so he can't be social - I must suck at being social because I too have that disorder!" This both demeans those with true issues and debases society as a whole, anyone with the inclination and drive can take advantage of this, and do. I'm most concerned, however, about how this is shifting into an ingrained concept by force of law - I'm a fan of your observation that it's Orwellian; instead of outlawing a right, you make it socially unacceptable - taboo.

I gained a whole new respect for UoC after that statement. Other Universities need to follow suit. The world can be a shitty place, and giving people an option to jump inside a bubble so their feelings don't get hurt is setting these people up ultimately for failure. I wish the world was always tits and beer, but the fact is, it isn't. College is supposed to be a learning opportunity along with a real life experience. No safe spaces in real life, unless you stay in your mom and dad's basement. Edit for a grammar nazi.

[–]EduBA 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'm from Argentina, a country with some Italian roots. I'll copy here a fast translation of a small part of an Act of Parliament regarding violence against women:

2.- Psychological violence: That which causes emotional damage and decreased self-esteem or hurts and disturbs full personal development or looking to degrade or control their actions, behaviors, beliefs and decisions by

threats,

harassment,

restrictions,

humiliation,

disgrace ,

discrediting,

isolation,

manipulation.

It also includes

scapegoating,

constant vigilance,

demand for obedience,

submission,

verbal coercion,

persecution,

insult,

indifference,

neglect,

excessive jealousy,

blackmail,

ridiculing,

exploitation,

limitation of freedom of movement or any other means which would be harmful to their psychological health and self-determination.

Maybe some day will put a translation of the full Act (Ley 26485) on the web.

[–]FlameSpartan 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]my_lucid_nightmare 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

how do people feel about trigger warnings for military veterans with PTSD?

They need to move beyond it. Treat it or find a way to be around so called triggers. If not, they're mentally damaged from their service and they need help.

It's not society's job to provide an ever-widening list of safe spaces for people, regardless of their issues they may or may not be dealing with, for possibly valid reasons.

[–]einheit80 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As a veteran with PTSD, I think this a harsh but ultimately correct view. Veterans don't need protection...we've been trained to overcome everything thrown at us. Some things just take extra help.

I still get nervous in crowds...can't sit in the middle of restaurants...but I found a woman that recognizes when I get nervous and calms me with her beautiful voice or by holding my hand. This week was the first week in a long time that I slept soundly.

And these fucking trigger warnings...if any of these assholes actually dealt with any real stress in their lives they would have a fucking stroke.

If any vets read this and need help, please PM me.

I think we've gotten to the point where actual trigger warnings for people suffering PTSD aren't even considered when the word comes up anymore. The word has been hijacked by ultra liberals who are thin skinned and afraid of confrontation or dissimilar thought. It's an unfortunate thing but the hyper liberals tend to latch onto words and leach them of importance or significance.

[–]JulianCaesar 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean, truthfully, I see way more alt-right types whining about triggers and pc-culture than any liberals. I don't think it's as big a thing as people make it out to be, but it sure makes for an ironic situation when those who hate the whining whine so often.

[–]johnchapel 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not the same thing at all.

SJWs arent getting "triggered". theres no such thing. Theyre just getting pissed off that they have to face their own insecurities and don't want to deal with or fix them.

[–]BenevolentCheese 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Rape victims can't get triggered?

his is a old psychological variant that can mentally create a internally circumstance where the vet feels threatened and has to defend himself.

What the fuck does that even mean?

"is SJW triggering like a vet with ptsd being triggered."

Why did you put that in quotes? I did not say that.

[–]Tomes2789 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think that any kind of "trigger warning" is bullshit. If you choose to go to war, you have to get re-adjusted to society. You can't expect the entirety of society to re-adjust to you.

That's the main issue of this "trigger" bullshit in a nutshell. The people who support it are basically saying that they are more special than the rest of society, and that society should re-conform to them.

While veterans are the rare case in which they may actually DESERVE special treatment in some ways, re-adjusting our everyday societal interactions such as creating these trigger warnings is NOT one of the ways we should have to help them.

[–]JulianCaesar 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

We have trigger warnings on tv and movies, but they're the accepted kind. I don't think being warned about stuff is that big a deal.

[–]Tomes2789 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's completely different, though.

I'm guessing you're talking about the preview warnings and such.

Basically, those are there for legal reasons (I have a law degree, so I'm not just talking out my ass here haha), and not as "trigger warnings."

They are there because they are shown in situations (such as theaters, homes, etc.) where they can't accurately judge their entire viewing audience, and our society accepts and appreciates the "need" to "protect" young children from certain aspects of our society in certain situations (such as violence and sex in movies/tv).

Trigger warnings for adult human beings, just because they may be "sensitive" to things our society has accepted as acceptable, in not okay in my opinion.

[–]martininkorea 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good for them!!

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good for them, as some one that means towards dems. Its good to see things start to drift s Away from this hippy bullshit and make people grow some thick skin and understand not everyone thinks the same and that's ok.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

President Obama said: “Don’t try to shut folks out, don’t try to shut them down, no matter how much you might disagree with them.

I think he's wrong about that. There are some debates that you simply should not have anymore. You can find very passionate flat-earthers but there is no longer any point in debating them. You can find people who want to re-institute slavery but there is just no point debating them.

Whether we like to admit it or not simply entertaining an idea to the point of serious engagement gives it a degree of legitimacy. The notion that we should just be open to debate anything and everything is incorrect. We should, as a society, try to move forward to debates that actually have value and leave behind ideas that have already been completely and thoroughly discredited.

[+]Taxonomyoftaxes -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I think in general this entire warning is entirely disingenuous. All these posts I see here are saying it's great that these "sjws can't get away with their absolute bullshit anymore" but there is a huge misunderstanding and hypocrisy in these criticisms.

I do not understand what is fundamentally wrong about letting people know what you're talking about could be upsetting to people. That's simply considerate, people act as though giving a "trigger warning" is a form of censorship, but it doesn't mean you don't discuss the topic at hand, you just let those who may not be able or willing to handle discussion of the topic at hand what is going to be discussed. We practice this with discretion all the time in our private lives. I'm sure you wouldn't want to talk about someone's recently deceased family member in front of them.

The idea that the university won't take a speaker off their schedule due to their controversial topics is fine to me, but to claim the university and university groups practices no self censorship in purposefully choosing groups which agree with their viewpoints is preposterous. You will find a lot more people at the rallies that would agree with these "controversial speakers" than "sjws" that would disagree with them. The university is essentially criticizing people for expressing their opinions freely, which is the entire point of inviting speakers.

Lastly, in my mind safe spaces are just a temporary refuge for people who may not feel comfortable and safe in the average public space. People who visibly dress in the style of the other gender or who are wearing hijabs who are noticeably different have every right to have spaces where they can be temporarily free of judgement. These people have to spend their entire lives being judged by the average person, what is fundamentally wrong about letting them take a break? We do it ourselves, I'm certain the majority of us don't purposely put ourselves into spheres we know we may be criticized and judged as often as we can. If you would find yourself uncomfortable in a space described as a "safe space" you're just experiencing what many who use these places experience on a frequent basis.

Anyway, that's all I've got to say on it.

"I do not understand what is fundamentally wrong about letting people know what you're talking about could be upsetting to people. That's simply considerate, people act as though giving a "trigger warning" is a form of censorship, but it doesn't mean you don't discuss the topic at hand..."

That's where you are wrong because SJWs don't allow differing viewpoints to be heard. They choose to go to see speakers that they know will offend them and try to shout them down so they can't be heard. It's ridiculous BS that should result in the student being suspended or expelled (for repeat occurrences).

[–]Taxonomyoftaxes 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

You should suspend or expell people for expressing their right to freedom of thought and expression? Shit, and you complain about how sjws are crowding people out. I think you need to actually go and spend some time with these people you seem to understand so intimately and you'll find a lot of what you think is a misconception. You base your view of these people on YouTube videos of protesters and reports from people they disagree with. I could create a video compilation that made it seem like conservatives are all racist nazis, or point to all the videos of racists and brutish Trump supporters, and try to claim this is what they're all like. But I'm certain you'd find that this is disingenuous. So why then is this a legitimate way to characterize those on the left?

[–]Brubold 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They are not simply expressing their right to freedom of thought and expression. They are keeping someone else from doing so by shouting them down during a speech that person has been brought in to give. Now if there is meaningful discussion and debate that follows such a speech, that's great. I support that interaction fully and it allows differing views to be heard. Shouting someone down so they can't be heard though? There's no room for it. Fuck that person and their childish antics.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's simply considerate, people act as though giving a "trigger warning" is a form of censorship

Trigger warnings are silly, but they're not a real problem.

Lastly, in my mind safe spaces are just a temporary refuge for people who may not feel comfortable and safe in the average public space.

The issue is that people want to extend this too far. They want to barr certain kinds of speech within these safe spaces, and want them to extend ridiculously, sometimes for the entire university (remember that one case where the student was yelling at her dean).

People who visibly dress in the style of the other gender or who are wearing hijabs who are noticeably different have every right to have spaces where they can be temporarily free of judgement.

I disagree. I wear a turban, and outside my home I demand no special treatment, because I expect none. I've heard my fair share of insults, and I've heard people call my father Osama, but a safe space does nothing. And honestly, when I hear people say that people like me need a safe space, I see it as little more than condescension.

But you know what? I don't speak for everyone. If there's a conference for rape, perhaps there should be a room on the side where survivors can go and take a break. But again, people want to take this too far. First off, the coloring books were just silly. You have to give me that. But secondly, again, they want safe spaces to be almost omni-prevalent. And a campus cannot be a safe space.

This is really pleasing, though I do wish I'd stumbled upon it on r/malevirgins but oh well, this is reddit after all.

The other thing schools badly need is to stop treating idiots with kid gloves. I can't even fucking count the number of times I'd hear someone raise their hand, give a completely wrong answer, and be told something along the lines of "well that's a good point in it's own way, but not the answer I was looking for". It's fucking wrong! Just say "no, that's completely wrong."

Here is the thing though. If you don't like them don't participate ya know? Like idk why there is all this hate for things that are so optional. For me I'm a white male right, and I've never had a problem trying to accommodate people who have legitimate grievances based on there identity. I feel like the term "PC" is used in such a negative way, but personally I think being aware of people's feelings and situations makes us better neighbors. I don't know, maybe you do have to sacrifice some "freedom of speech" rights or something, but it's more about being a more inclusive world than the last generation was.

Does that make me a pussy? I'll let the votes decide ;)

[–]theNrg 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

People don't have a right not to get offended, and silencing others to protect some people's feelings is just plain wrong.

In other words - fuck ya'll, im here to study physics, not to contantly watch my steps so i wouldnt accidently hurt your godamn meaningless feelings.

[–]FlameSpartan 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Meaningless is a bit of a misnomer. I'd rather say "worthless."

[+]TBirdFirster -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well like what if there is an actual sexual assault victim? Idk I think it's worth stepping on egg shells to help someone get over something that horrific. To me at least

[–]breadvelvet 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yeah that's definitely a necessary trigger warning to have imo. i feel like the majority of reddit loves yelling out "TRIGGERED" as a punchline to a non-joke without so much as taking the time to understand the actual purpose of those warnings; i mean, i consider [NSFL] a trigger warning on here and i literally have never seen a single person complain about that. so sometimes they're entirely necessary yeah. sorry about the downvotes despite your comment actually contributing to discussion lol

[–]WitteringRaven 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The trouble is on lot of campuses it stopped being optional, Professors are being investigated or fired for talking about race or use of profanity or "sexual" language. Student political clubs are denied because of supporting the wrong party or if there a club that reaches back before the sjw bullshit there denied freedom of association or founding based on their political views. Student journalists have been charged with violating privacy for anonymously quoting a public speech. Students are being suspended for years because of things they post on social media. The fact the your pretending its just a meeting somewhere on campus where you don't have to participate if you don't want is disingenuous.

Some examples of what I'm talking about: https://www.thefire.org/cases/university-of-south-carolina-stand-up-for-speech-lawsuit/ https://www.thefire.org/cases/american-university-recognition-denied-to-political-student-organization/ https://www.thefire.org/cases/university-of-kansas-professor-reinstated-after-four-month-investigation-into-classroom-speech/ https://www.thefire.org/cases/brandeis-university-student-journalists-cleared-of-charges-for-reporting-on-sexual-assault-awareness-event/ https://www.thefire.org/cases/hagerstown-community-college-political-clubs-denied-freedom-of-association/ https://www.thefire.org/cases/university-of-akron-unconstitutional-permit-requirements-burden-suppress-student-expression/ https://www.thefire.org/cases/university-of-oregon-student-government-denies-groups-funding-over-pro-gun-rights-views/ https://www.thefire.org/cases/colorado-college-student-suspended-for-two-years-for-joke-on-social-media/

If FIRE hadn't taken up cases most wouldn't end well even with FIRE helping most are in fact still ongoing. So stop pretending it's something it's not, if you want something like a safe space maybe advocate for something more defined because safe spaces have been taken over by whiny people who want their entire campus to kowtow to their beliefs and never hear an opposing view.

Also if you want to own a private venue where you restrict what can and can't be said that's one thing but "sacrifice some freedom of speech rights" in the name of "a more inclusive world than the last generation" is something very few will stand for and i will certainly not.

Finally a double fuck you for putting freedom of speech in quotes.
