I was invited by my Jewish friend to his son's Bris. I was reluctant to go because I am not religious, but between his insistence and my curiosity I could not resist. After the infant was cut and began screaming, I watched in amazement as the family and friends cheered and applauded.

I never mentioned my negative views on circumcision or said anything impolite about the ceremony or the practice before it or during. A few weeks later the friend and I were talking to a European man when the friend mentioned the Bris in conversation. The colleague asked what a Bris was and I have the response in the title.

My friend, who isn't a friend any more, thinks my remarks were not only insensitive due to the use of the word "mutilation" but also antisemitic due to the use of the word "ritualistic." I thought I was being neither rude nor antisemitic, but rather accurately describing a Bris.
