Unbelievable that in the decades after their marriage ends the justices see literally ZERO responsibility for this woman to improve her own welfare. A grown adult woman but she can literally take two decades off of life and her ex-husband can be expected to pick up the tab. Don't get me wrong, I feel for anyone on the skids, but it's totally self-imposed in this case.

The crux of her claim is based around the fact that when they divorced they did not agree financial terms of the divorce. She really is a nasty woman. This is theft really. If at the time of the divorce he had a got a financial order then nothing would be due. Because no financial order was applied for since neither had any assets then she could then make a claim 25 years later.

It is applying the letter of the law. However there have been many cases where the letter of the law has not been applied for example in "wills" after a death so why they are following the letter of the law now seems unjust.

The best advice to anyone male or female is not to get married.

I know someone is going to call me a heartless knob for being the one to come out and say it but why the fuck should he be made fiscally responsible?? They divorced before he made anything of himself, she's had NOTHING to do with his success in life and he's had nothing to do with the fact she's done nothing other than rely on the state! This shit really makes my blood boil - where is the motivation for men to move on with your life after a divorce?!? The guy is effectively being punished because he used to love her, she is now in poor health, lives in a council house and has made a court feel sorry for her. It shouldn't be his problem! What's going to stop her suing him again next year and the year after if his company continues on the path to success?? He may well be able to afford it as far as the judges are concerned but what about the ramifications this binding precedent sets on everyday joe who's scraped his life back together after getting his pants pulled down by her lawyers?? What's going to stop any subsequently broke ass ex wife from suing again for more stuff they've done nothing to contribute towards! Divorce screws men enough as it is without the constant prospect of them coming back years later for another bite of the cherry looming over mens heads.

It's happening outside of the UK, too.

Here in Canada, we had a case in the late 2000s where a woman reopened her divorce action and came back looking for spousal support, 12 years after their divorce, and after she had already received a lump sum as part of the divorce for spousal support.

She blew through 2M dollars in assets over that 12 years without making any improvement on her ability to earn money (which was zilch), and so the judge essentially broke open the divorce and gave her spousal support, largely to keep her off of public assistance.

Since that day and that precedent, Canada has rarely seen time limited spousal support awards, and now our awards are virtually always indefinite. Your marriage may be definite, but your spousal support sure won't be.

There is literally no barrier, no end point, no justification that you cannot see overturned and flipped so that you pay. The ONLY solution is not to get married in the first place.
