Because their entire movement depends on this notion. If they would question it, or even allow questioning it, the whole ideology would crumble. This leads to their one-sided blindness where they observe in meticulous detail the hardships of women but ignore the hardships of men on a mindbending level. This way it's laughably easy to "prove" that women have it worse. They do this consistently with the past, the present, and other cultures as well. Since there's no place in time and space where nobody had it bad, if you focus exclusively on women's problems their oppression seems truly everpresent.

It's actually very simple and lies in the very root and beginning of feminism. Most feminists claim suffrage to be the birth of and the first issue dealt with by feminism. I'm sure there were women's groups before that but nothing really organized and nothing that survived for a longer period of time.

At the time when this stuff was going down (the very early 1900s) the world had recently seen the industrial revolution and society was starting to adapt. Medecine had made and is making great strides in both disease prevention via vaccines and curing diseases via development of new techniques and new medicines. Life is steadily becoming easier and we are watching the growth of the middle class and the working class. Poverty is massively decreasing and more people are getting access to education.

These are all events that carry with the massive change to our social environment but the thing is that established society takes a while to evolve. We were moving into a new world order a whole new way of life never before seen or imagined.

So back to suffrage, I'm sure you have already heard the arguments here before. Suffrage was originally for those with enough assets, those who owned land, this is because they paid the most taxes. The idea was that to somehow legitimize and give incentive to these people to keep paying taxes they also get a say in how the country is run. You pay a lot of money and you own a lot of land, well you get to have a say in what is done with this money and land equal to your contribution. It's pretty reasonable when you think about it actually.

The second step when it comes to suffrage was awarding it to those drafted for war, with the rationale that if your country can tell you to lay down your life for it you should also have a say in how it's ruled.
Now previously women hadn't been barred from voting, at least not technically, there was still what you might consider a de facto bar against them voting. With this second step that de facto bar became even more visible. Women saw unfairness because now pretty much all men could vote, but only the women who owned a lot of assets and paid a lot of taxes could vote. And this is when the whole fight for women's suffrage began.

Since this is considered the issue that gave birth to feminism this is also where it all went wrong. Women were advocating for women's suffrage on the sole account that they were women and that men already could vote. They became aggressive and spread a narrative of them being treated unfairly, oppressed even. There was a massive organization of women for this and they all basically remained in their own echo chambers where this narrative of unjust treatment simply because they were women was fed and grew.

It didn't take very long for women to get suffrage, and slightly after that officials said "fuck it, let's just make it universal suffrage" and that was that. Had feminism been born from a movement for universal suffrage it would have had a different path. But feminism was born from women's suffrage, the idea the women were exclusively singled out and kept away from voting because they were women.

Why I bring up the history around it is because it puts things into context. This was a time of great societal change due to all the great advancements we made. Information was shared much more rapidly than ever, education was offered to more and more people, we enjoyed much greater freedoms and had more actual free time.

At this time women gathered and looked for evidence that they were oppressed, that they were treated differently. They looked back over history and applied the standards of their own time to events that happened long before and that didn't take into account the recent and immense social change that happened.

Feminism was never about equality, it was about awarding women rights. Not the "same rights as men" but rights that they themselves felt entitled to, rights that didn't even exist before then and thus couldn't possibly have been awarded to men in the first place. They saw what they didn't have and wanted it for themselves but they didn't see or want the obligations that came with it. That's why they are not now nor were they ever for equality.

Third wave feminism is not that different from what it originally was, it still carries with it the same root flaw that it was born from and molded by. Feminism today has over a century of people with this mindset working to justify and solidify the worldview and then legitimize it. And say what you will about feminism but when it is to further their own cause like this they haven't been slacking off.

I will advocate for women's issues any day of the week, because women do face issues. I'm also for working with a gendered point of view in order to solve some issues that aren't actually gendered. When doing this one must still be aware that the issue itself isn't gendered but that certain solutions will work better for one gender than the other. Women and men share many of the same issues, it's just that they take different forms and may require different solutions based on the gender. None of this means that one gender is somehow oppressed by the other in a sort of systematic sense. Individual cases and microcultures with these tendencies will appear but they are just that, assholes being assholes.

Part of it is straight up indoctrination. Our schools taught us from the get go how horrible women used to have it...this had the effect of raising a generation of men believing it no matter what.

A feminist defriended me on Facebook (big loss, I know) after I mocked her for claiming she was pressured by society into wearing high heels. I asked her to name names, if it was her husband, even offered to beat up the asshole who was torturing her thusly.

Odd thing is she's a classical musician, so wearing heels is part of the job. Just like wearing a damn neck tie for a man, I hate those things.

"West". Which west are you talking about?

My aunt wasn't able to open a bank account in Portugal when they realised she was married. Poland and several other eastern european countries have very clear social structures that keep women as housewives. Women are employed considerably less than men in Italy due to pressure to remain at home with children at elderly parents.

So, like most posts about feminism on this sub, i assume you're really just talking about the UK and USA.

I think it's because there are statistics that feminists can point to that have a big effect. Rape, murder, and domestic violence statistics get more attention than statistics about dads who don't get custody.
