most women killed chivalry themselves alright. And the girl has a point too, she is basically saying "women should give men reasons for them to show them chivalry", in her own entitled, ignorant way.

Chivalry existed at the same time as the dowry. You want to negotiate ladies? Lets call you dad.

someone(I think it was a youtuber but I could be wrong) explained the original purpose of this was to making leaving the marriage a MASSIVE loss to not just the woman, but her family as well. the man's family kept it regardless of how the marriage turned out, so instead of taking a man for everything he's worth, the woman lost out, and her family wouldn't be to keen on helping her after she just cost them a shitload.

Yup. Guys don't walk around getting "sexually harrassed". People also generally don't give a fuck about and walk into them, slam doors in their faces and expect them to be responsible for their actions.
Ain't equality grand?
[–]Chewitt321 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Weirdly it's the opposite in a club or bar. Men are respectful to each other asking and gesturing their way through whereas women barge through the middle rudely. But that's because they don't have the risk of a smack that a guy has.

Former bouncer here, can attest to the fact that I've had to remove cunty women for laying their hands on people and they fought tooth and nail the whole way out. Where as men might have a row at each other but you tell em to leave and out the door the go with a handshake.
[–]feckinghound 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link
I think you're interacting with assholes. I see guys and chicks holding doors open for each other all the time and saying thanks to each other etc.
But I'm in Scotland though, where everyone is pretty polite to everyone generally. You definitely notice a difference when you go to London. The lengths people go to to avoid other people is pretty astonishing some times.
[–][deleted] 42 points43 points44 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
People hold doors here too (NY) but the point is people will go out of the way* for a woman where they wouldn't for a man. There's definitely a city vs suburb/rural difference though.
Usually women get treated differently (see the lesbian feminist woman who lived as a man for a year as an experiment. She said she felt worthless and ignored and was depressed rather quickly. She claims to have totally changed her view on men and their position in western society afterwards). Women will become used to this (i.e. women and moving, almost always have a male friend come do it/help). Once used to the treatment you have entitlement. It's a vicious cycle.
Pretty much, you either treat everyone equally (no special privileges) or you don't (back to weak snowflake status). Third wave feminists seek to pick and choose which applies where.

My favorite quote: "Ironically, Vincent said, it took experiencing life as a man for her to appreciate being a woman. "I really like being a woman. ... I like it more now because I think it's more of a privilege."

Yeah I remember someone posted that story about the lesbian feminist here didn't they? or it was /r/mensrights.
I'm pretty much one of those people who will hold a door open for anyone if they're around me and always make eye contact with people.
I think that's a problem for a lot of people and where a lot of problems come from. Just by acknowledging someone's existence changes social situations.
So does a please and thank you. Basic courtesies that a lot of people don't appreciate.
I'm also one of those people that will talk to anyone when I'm approached when most people would sick their nose in the air. The nicest people I meet regularly are in fact drug addicts in my city. They always say hello to you and ask how your day is and ask fot a cigarette and apologise when you say you don't smoke. Then theyll tell you to have a good day and away they go. I used to have a good laugh with them when they'd come into places I worked cos they'd be sneaky about stealing stuff but they were treated as just a 'character'.
The worst are old people because they seem to have more entitlement than any other people I've come across.
Apart from 'business people' on the tubes in London. Their importance matters so get out of their way!

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I hear what you are saying. I think the same way - help everyone. However, some experiences Ive had have lead me to hesitate before helping people, especially women.
One time, I held a door open for a girl in uni, and she exploded at me asking whether i thought she couldnt do it herself because she was a woman. i was like what.the.fuck.
I also know a bit about cars. so if i see someone with a raised up bonnet or a flat tire, i stop and see if i can help, regardless of a male or female. dudes are usually very appreciative. Once i stopped for a girl, and she pretty much treated me like i was about to jump on her and kill her or something. she had no clue how to change a tire. after i was done, she got in her car and left without as much as a thank you.
that incident in particular has made me really afraid to help people like that. so now i just keep driving.

Maybe I'm just lucky to have never been blown up at, but I dont know if it would stop me from doing it. I don't really help them for them, I do it because that's how I would hope my mom gets treated, or my grandpa, or anyone I know that might need a leg up. Even if 9 out of 10 people chewed my head off, it would be worth it for the one receptive individual.

I'm a male, but I feel the similar way, she feels.
I hate the looks I get if I help a woman. I hate how some women are offended by it. So I stopped doing it. Although I miss the good feeling it gave me to be helpful and generous. But it is a necessary deed, because some are exploiting chivalry and are cherry picking privileges. I think this (feminism) killed chivalry. And it spoiled every day human interactions forever.
You no longer can hold a door open for a woman without risking being labeled sexist. It does not matter that you do it to some men too. You can't say to your female colleague that you like her haircut, without risking her running to the HR for inappropriate behavior. I tend not to sit beside a woman, because if she declares any kind of offensive conduct by me, the system is set up to help her victimize herself. And the system punishes and labels me. Of course there are still women on the train who demand you to give up your seat for chivalry.

I'm going to get downvoted, but I'll give it a shot. I sense some entitlement in her, but I also think she wants to balance it out. I think, and hope, that she's trying to say men and women have different roles - she is holding women accountable for the fact they act like they don't need men. I have no problem being "chivalrous" to women if they pay the respect back.
[–]Internetcoitus 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
she is holding women accountable for the fact they act like they don't need men.
But they DON'T need men. Both women and men should be able to operate completely independent and unreliant on each other for regular everyday tasks such as opening doors.
I have no problem being "chivalrous" to women if they pay the respect back.
This I can agree with. Everyone deserves a certain level of respect but I still think it's problematic to call it "chivalry" because that inherently implies a one way interaction, man to woman.
[–]baseacegoku 20 points21 points22 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]-morgoth- 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think she was very right to call out all women who have killed this whole concept of showing respect to women. I now rarely hold open a door for women because I'm sick of getting dirty looks from them like "WTF are you doing, creep?" and yet I hold a door open for men without hesitation because it's just respectful to do for a fellow human. So am I sexist for disrespecting women by NOT holding open a door?
[–]noth1ngbettertodo 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know why some people like admitting they're useless without people online. Kinda seems redundant.
Oh wait, she is a woman. Meaning she'll get defended.. Oh joy.
[–]Foxxies 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
She's not owed chivalry from any man except the one she's screwing. And that's generally the reason they do it. Those "mantality" men are treating her like any other person in the world that they don't know. It has nothing to do with gender. Haha. Disgusting.
[–]Logan117 -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
Chivalry is a bullshit concept. It hides misogyny behind a thin veil of treating "ladies" like a "gentleman" should. It is literally a medieval concept, so lets leave it in the middle ages. You want a philosophy on how people should treat each other? Egalitarianism. done.

[–]Logan117 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Men shouldn't be expected to pay for dates. I often pay for the meal when I'm with a friend (male or female), but I do it to be nice, and gender is irrelevant. The reason tradition has men paying is because women used to not even be allowed jobs and this have money. The tradition of asking a girl's parents for permission to marry her comes from the fact that women used to be property, and marriage was a financial transaction. The ring was payment and stems from the concept of a dowry. The gown symbolized virginity, and the two would consummate their marriage before leaving the ceremony.
Women shouldn't expect the door opened for them by men, but I hold the door if someone is right behind me, because it would be rude to slam it in their face.
Almost everything about traditional values and practices is discriminatory. If you want a modern code of ethics, try humanism and egalitarianism.
[–]Wargame4life 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
the true chivalry code is that if a women is unescorted she is to be left alone, but if accompanied (by a knight) upon defeating him she is yours to keep.
that is actually true believe it or not

Is chivalry seen as something wrong in this subreddit?
[–][deleted] 31 points32 points33 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Entitlement is.

[–]PepeG -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I fully agree with your comment. However I was asking specifically about chivalry.
[–]bsolidgold 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Dude. Put two and two together... Entitlement to chivalry is wrong.
Given freely to whomever, regardless of gender, it's a great thing. As soon as one goes around expecting it and feeling entitled to it, it's lost on them.
[–]YOU_GOT_REKT -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Maybe. I didn't get this vibe from this girl though. I think she just comes from a place where chivalry is the expectation from men and accepted by the women.
I think she's upset at how shitty of a place Seattle is because of the radfem movement vs somewhere where gender roles are more distinct and embraced, like the midwest or deep south.
[–]arthrax 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
To me she sounded like she thought everybody should be paying full attention to whatever she is doing at the cost of their attention and/or time. Which is entitled
[–]YOU_GOT_REKT 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
I've thought the same thing this woman is thinking, and I'm a male. I'm from the mid-west (and live here currently), but I moved to the east coast in high school. There was definitely a cultural and attitude difference between the two. It was more of a "Fuck you, I'm the only thing that's important" attitude on the east coast, where in the mid-west, people would bend over backwards to help you. I just interpreted the post at how flabbergasted she was to experience the difference.
[–]arthrax 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I live on the east coast and it is completely like that. Driving in areas is dangerous because of how willfully ignorant people will be about their surroundings and other cars. The thing is she brought it up as a feminist issue which is bullshit
[–]YOU_GOT_REKT 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're right. She probably just needs to realize that they just treat everyone like they don't matter, but not because they're women.
[–]Logan117 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Because gender roles are bullshit and the result of outdated concepts like religion and traditionalism. People can do whatever the fuck they want, and are not relegated to a certain life just because of their genitals.
[–]Jord5i 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago* (10 children) | Copy Link
Chivalry in general to anyone, totally cool. Because said person has a vagina, not so much
[–]PepeG 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Gotcha. I guess I just never sat to think about it. I've always been the chivalrous kind towards anyone, not just women, because that's how I was raised.
I've never had a case of anyone saying mean things to me just because I open their doors and stuff like that, that's why I still believe in chivalry. Seems not everyone agrees, being that my comment is now being negatively voted.
[–]Pseudonymble 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I'm on the same page; being decent to people is the decent thing to do. But wait until you are chastised for being a male-chauvinist when in fact you were just being nice. Super Awkward.
[–]FuncuzCapt-Save-A-Ho 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link
I don't believe in chivalry. Why should I ?
I stopped and gave it some thought once. What exactly do I get out of this deal ? So I'm supposed to open all your doors for you, push in your chair, give you my seat on the bus, etc., and you give me absolutely nothing in return. Maybe I get a thank you ? What the fuck is that worth ?
If I work at a manual labor job all day while some teenage mother spends her time collecting my tax dollars so that she can feed the kid that will eventually grow up to break into my home, explain to me why I'm supposed to give her the seat I paid for on the bus. I'm the one who's tired. I paid for my seat.
Chivalry is predicated on a social contract. Women broke that social contract a long time ago but some men still haven't got the message. Why am I supposed to take a bullet if the need arises for some woman I don't even know ? Why am I expected to stay in the burning house to make sure all the women get out safely ? Why am I supposed to do all the heavy lifting, tire replacement, rodent capturing, etc. if there's absolutely nothing in it for me ? It's a completely one-way street. Chivalry is entitlement manifest. When did I agree to any of this ?
Well, I didn't. So fuck them. When I get something in return I'll think about doing some of this bullshit. Now, I'll consider doing this stuff for family members, my wife, and women close to me because I care for them. I won't lift a finger for some random chick on the street who could even take offense that I offered something out of a sense of altruism. I'll do it for men if they actually need it. Otherwise, she's got arms, she can push her own fucking chair in.

Chivalry
the combination of qualities expected of an ideal knight, especially courage, honor, courtesy, justice, and a readiness to help the weak.
Calm down.
[–]FuncuzCapt-Save-A-Ho 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Ah...so you know some knights. I presume they wear white armor. Just make sure you follow the code ;)
[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Holy fuck, I'm just pointing out the selfishness of what you said is all, idk why everyone's throwing a fit.
[–]FuncuzCapt-Save-A-Ho 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You're pointing out my selfishness in not wanting to die for strange women just because they're women.
You don't know what selfishness means, apparently.
[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Goddamn dude.
No I'm pointing out that you literally made up context for why you won't do nice things for someone, especially just some woman, because you get nothing out of it, except maybe a thank you.
What the fuck is that worth ?
You even went as far as creating a scenario where you work manual labor, to pay taxes, that feed a teenage mom that will raise a criminal child that one day causes you harm...so why should you give her your seat?
I'm no white knight. I'm just a nice person. I will hold a door open for a man or a woman. I'll give up a seat to someone just because. Will I always do these things? When I do them will I expect gains in some way? No. I just, do. And sometimes I feel good doing them. Is that ok?
Or do we want to spout off more about the evil women and me being a white knight
[–]FuncuzCapt-Save-A-Ho -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm sorry you take away from this that we/I/you think women are evil. I think some women are evil for sure but I don't assume so.
I did say that I will do nice things for people just because. I will absolutely NOT do it for random women just because they're women. I do time consuming things for people all the time that provide me with no direct benefit except in a societal sense.
I'm the same as you in that regard. The difference is that I've weighed the pros and cons of chivalry and found that there is no pro side at all for any male not trying to get laid. Given today's highly-wound atmosphere regarding the genders I'd even submit that a man who does these things for a woman in an attempt to woo her will find himself fresh out of pussy too.
Chivalry is entitlements. That's exactly what it stands for. Anybody who ever bothers to ask themselves why women are entitled to any of these small privileges will find the rationale wanting. There is no reason to do any of these things simply because somebody happens to be a woman.
Interestingly enough, however, since people like to turn to dictionaries at times like these, allow me to light your way a little further on the basis of chivalry : It's not meant to apply to all women. In fact, it's only meant to apply to the upper classes and it also includes men. We just call it courtesy (same root oddly enough) civility, or manners but that's all it's supposed to be. A basic sense of manifest fairness.
With that in mind, we're also talking about a class of people (the chevaliers) who were more akin to the stereotypical viking than any sort of romantic caricature. These guys had no trouble raping, pillaging, and murdering if it served their purpose. They just understood that they couldn't do it everyone. Flash forward to 19th century pulp fiction and women begin to swoon over the romanticized tales of being swept off their feet by gallant knights of old. Voila ! Modern "chivalry" is born. It was their idea of the "good old days".
The idea today is predicated on the assumption that women are still weak and helpless. I would argue that today's women are the most privileged and helped people in the history of humanity. I have the statistics to prove it but one need only spend a minute thinking about it to come to the same conclusion.
With all that said, there's being nice and then there's being chivalrous. I will advise all men to never be chivalrous. Do kind things simply for the sake of kindness...absolutely. Do them out of some misplaced sense of traditional virtues for the opposite sex ? I think it's the epitome of cuckolding.
P.S. By the way, I'm not downvoting you. Just thought you should know that. People are allowed to disagree.
[–]Logan117 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's called being a decent human being. Chivalry is acting like a 12th century knight.
[–]Logan117 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Chivalry is an archaic concept that only purpetuates sexual inequality. Everyone should be treated equally. It's that simple.
[–]morerokk 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Chivalry is okay, as long as you do it for everyone. Not just women.
This concept already exists, and is called politeness.
[–]Deranged40Chewbacca is my lover 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I would have no problem if we were to go back to chivalry as a society. But, it seems we're going toward equality instead. Guys get shoulder checked all the time; I don't live in New York. You're probably not gonna get your ass kicked for that around here. It's not common that guys (or girls) open the door for me.
but hey. equality.

Not sure why you're being downvoted. Have an upvote in my vain attempt to try to balance things out.

I've found out that there are a lot of people that instead of trying to share their opinion or have a mature discussion immediately jump on the hate train and downvote.
Thanks for the upvote man, however you might need to prepare for the downvotes that are about to come your way as well.
Oh and btw, I did see your post and it made sense to me and I agree to a certain point with you.
