17 is a bit of a grey area imo, especially for a 49 yo. But saying it's ironic because he worked with children is just intentionally dishonest and tries to paint a different picture than what actually happened. He is not a paedophile and she isn't a child.

Ruin a man's life and get more of the public to outright condemn his actions, which they otherwise might not if the reporting was unbiased? No problem, just as long if it gets us more clicks.

I am not sure the Police are investigating.As they state it is not illegal:

"The simple fact is that it might not be illegal but a lot of people are going to disapprove of that sort of age gap and that sort of texting, particularly given this is an MP who made the exposure of child abuse a key part of his political career."

It's a nudge, nudge, wink, wink 'news' story, made all the more titillating by the large age gap, but I bet the Sun would have been just as keen to report it if it had been Harriet Harman, although I doubt anyone would even have considered reporting it to the police. I can't see what there is to investigate.

Like it or not, politicians are generally held to a higher moral standard, and their personal lives are subject to closer scrutiny than normal people. That this is a political issue is not news.

That the BBC is actually reporting a negative story about a Labour politician is news.
