When Loons have bought into a cult, no matter how their cult thinking and behaviour is debunked that just belive it more. They are just Slaves to the Victim Narrative and demands for special privilege.

As with all slaves they can not be freed until they choose to be freed.

I wonder if Rape Culture and the other Victim Narratives are just Adrenaline Junkie Behaviours linked to Couch Potato Feminism?

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

RAINN didn't actually say rape culture doesn't exist. They said it was not a viable and progressive way to address issues of rape. They pointed out rightly so that "rape culture" shifts the blame for rape from rapists to culture. One thing and only one thing causes rape, rapists. "Rape Culture" detracts from that message.

RAINN doesn't deny "Rape Culture" exists, only that it addressing rape in that framework won't help reduce incidents of rape.

[–]zktr 19 points20 points21 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, they did say that it does not exist. They said "rape is caused not by cultural factors". How does that NOT mean "rape culture" doesn't exist? They said it's not caused by culture.

[–]Aaberg123 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's a very strange way to look at culture.

Godwin's law enacted: were all the people participating in the Holocaust all simply "murderous monsters", or did a culture of anti semitism act as a catalyst? I ask, because your claims appears very naive to me.

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I didn't say culture does not have the power to catalyze atrocities. It does. Cultures with high levels of racism or sexism could lead have lead to all sorts of atrocities. Just look at the Vietnam War. Tens of thousands of young men where kidnapped at gun point and shipped off to a foreign hell hole to be murdered in political blood sport. Countless more where murdered on the other side of the conflict as well. Individuals supporting the draft where not murderous monsters, but participants in mainstream culture.

Racism lead to about 80% of all Jews being murdered in 4 years. In the same time frame less than 2% of all women in the USA will be raped. Only 0.35% of men will rape in that time frame. About 1/3 of 1% is not "Culture", it is a fringe minority. With 1/3 of 1% of men engaging in rape, it is not a "normal" activity with institutional and cultural support.

If something is to be considered part of culture, first you need to show that it's wide spread and accepted enough that the stats are not better explained by a small fringe of criminal elements.

Criminals with out regard to the crime understand that what they are doing is wrong, immoral, illegal and harmful. They just don't care. Rape is not some special case that is inherently different than every other crime.

The only time I ever seen or heard someone support rape was boys being raped by female teachers and men being raped by a large black man in prison. Sexist and racist.

[–]Throwaway4987350 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

However, rape accusation culture is actually becoming a thing.

Maybe we need some "Teach girls not to falsely accuse men" posters. Because they don't seem to understand that it's a bad thing to do.

[–]Chrispy3690 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I made a post about a year ago when that report came out in r/AskFeminists saying something to the extent: "Now that RAINN declared 'Rape Culture' non-existent, what should we rename it?"

They didn't get the joke and fucking exploded.

[–]8088XT8BIT 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Race_Rape_Culture .. Just ask the Nords & Swedes. It doesn't get any worse then in the land of Feminism. Two out of every ten Swedish / Norwegian girls / are now raped. Rape epidemic in Scandinavia .. who would a thought?

[–]InlandThaiPanFry 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[+]TRPACC -21 points-20 points-19 points 11 years ago* (99 children) | Copy Link

Its probably because the things they say rape culture are do actually exist and are observable.

The problem RAINN and mra's have with knowing whether or not or which parts of "rape culture" do exist or not, or how to best go about making a counter argument is not knowing what its supposed to be in the first place.

[–]BlueDoorFour 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (98 children) | Copy Link

And what, may I ask, is the rape culture that the foremost authority on sexual violence doesn't see?

[+]TRPACC -6 points-5 points-4 points 11 years ago (97 children) | Copy Link

Actually RAINN didn't say the things feminists call "rape culture" don't exist.

n the last few years, there has been an unfortunate trend towards blaming “rape culture” for the extensive problem of sexual violence on campus. While it is helpful to point out the systemic barriers to addressing the problem, it is important not to lose sight of a simple fact: Rape is caused not by cultural factors but by the conscious decisions, of a small percentage of the community, to commit a violent crime.

What they are saying is that hyperbole and hysteria is a distraction from the actual issue.

[–]jankyalias 20 points21 points22 points 11 years ago (96 children) | Copy Link

I feel like you missed the money quote part there:

Rape is caused not by cultural factors but by the conscious decisions, of a small percentage of the community, to commit a violent crime.

Which completely dismissed the idea that society suffers from a "rape culture". They aren't saying there is no more improvement that can be done in other areas. Of course not. As long as rape exists it will be an issue. However, they do not agree that ours is a culture that endorses or condones rape, having a causal effect on rape incidents. Thus, no rape culture.

Which is a pretty big difference from those pushing the "rape culture" meme. It is, in fact, a basic difference at the heart of the meme.

[+]TRPACC -11 points-10 points-9 points 11 years ago (95 children) | Copy Link

Which completely dismissed the idea that society suffers from a "rape culture".

No it doesn't. It does by mra definitions of what rape culture means but it doesn't according to the actual meaning of rape culture.

[–]jankyalias 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I think you need to educate yourself about what rape culture means.

[+]TRPACC -6 points-5 points-4 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I know what it means. I started trying to find out back when the slut walk got off the ground because our interpretations sound too absurd to be true.

From what I can see, I'm the only mra who can articulate the theory behind the hyperbole.

[+]ChronQuixote 11 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Rape culture includes jokes, TV, music, advertising, legal jargon, laws, words and imagery, that make violence against women and sexual coercion seem so normal that people believe that rape is inevitable. Rather than viewing the culture of rape as a problem to change, people in a rape culture think about the persistence of rape as “just the way things are.” http://www.wavaw.ca/what-is-rape-culture/

The above feminist definition is exactly what RAINN is saying does not exist. TRPACC trying to sound all high and mighty with his internal definition which he didn't even bother posting. Yeah you're the only special snowflake that can articulate things.

[+]TRPACC -6 points-5 points-4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You didn't read the link I gave you.

[–]caius_iulius_caesar 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think you're an MRA.

[–]TRPACC 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's just our groupthink - if I go out and find out what their theory means, and repeat it here in attempt to encourage people to make relevant counter arguments then some people say I'm not really part of the group.

[–]BlueDoorFour 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (82 children) | Copy Link

Please clarify for me: What is the MRA definition and what is the feminist definition?

[+]TRPACC -6 points-5 points-4 points 11 years ago (81 children) | Copy Link

The mra impression is that that rape culture means the culture is openly and consciously supporting all rape including violent stranger rape, which is too absurd to be true.

The feminist definition is much less absurd and mra's would agree with a lot of it and often point out the parts where it applies to men, not knowing they are talking about what feminists call rape culture.

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Rape_culture

[+]ChronQuixote 11 years ago [recovered] (38 children) | Copy Link

I seriously doubt that any MRA with a modicum of intelligence would agree with what you perceive is their understanding of the meaning of rape culture.

[–]The03k 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're right. Lots of MRA's think that "rape culture means the culture is openly and consciously supporting all rape including violent stranger rape" is what feminists define as rape culture. It's pretty accurate, too. Can't make a rape joke, otherwise it's rape culture! Murder jokes? Ha, totally not some weird concept like "murder culture" or anything.

To feminists, of course.

[–]TRPACC -5 points-4 points-3 points 11 years ago (36 children) | Copy Link

The main counter argument has been pointing out that violent stranger rape has always been seen as among the worst crimes, something that feminists don't actually disagree with.

Having been around 6 years, I know what common mra interpretations are.

[+]ChronQuixote 11 years ago [recovered] (35 children) | Copy Link

"Having been around 6 years, I know what common mra interpretations are."

Using hearsay to support your argument isn't helping you. If your interpretation is common can you explain why everyone that has posted disagreed with you?

[–]TRPACC-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Two people have agreed with me, /u/theblue door and /u/The03k

Thats why the main counter argument used, is pointing out that violent stranger rape has always been considered the most serious of crimes, therefore the feminist claims are absurd - because we have tended to believe they are making the arguing that people are consciously supporting rape of all kinds, as opposed to what they are actually saying.

[–]The03k3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Didn't agree with you. I was saying that feminists think rape culture, is rape being the "normalized" and is seen as not that big of an issue. That's why people laugh at the concept of "rape culture". Because it IS seen as one of the most serious of crimes, some even consider rape worse than murder. Yet feminists think rape is normalized and accepted.

[–]TRPACC-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You don't understand their argument, they agree that violent stranger rape has always been treated as one of the worst crimes.

People laugh because they think they are saying violent stranger rape is normal as in nobody bats an eyelid, and accepted, which is not what they are saying.

[–]The03k3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I've never heard someone who spouts "rape culture" say that, ever. All I've heard is "Rape culture is when rape is seen as something normal" and variations of that. That's why they're against making rape jokes, because that "normalizes" rape.

[–]TRPACC-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's why they're against making rape jokes, because that "normalizes" rape.

Right, they are against rape jokes because rapists hear what they do being depicted as funny, and to that rapist it in a way normalizes their behaviour.

It makes perfect sense.

There is nothing wrong with that argument.

[–]The03k4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Except it doesn't. Because rape jokes are known as "dark humor". You know, fucked up humor that makes lots of people uncomfortable. Those jokes are seen as messed up, so, rape, is still seen as messed up.

Not to forget, what about murder jokes? Is that "murder culture"? What about 9/11 jokes? Is that "terrorist culture?"

[–]TRPACC-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

except it doesn't. Because rape jokes are known as "dark humor". You know, fucked up humor that makes lots of people uncomfortable. Those jokes are seen as messed up, so, rape, is still seen as messed up.

How do you know what it sounds like to a rapist?

Do jokes about prison rape trivialize prison rape?

Not to forget, what about murder jokes? Is that "murder culture"?

We object to jokes about killing all men. There is no group of murder victims are going to strongly object to jokes at their expense, people object to Germans making jokes about murdering jews etc.

Is that "murder culture"?

Yeah, for example the culture surrounding the holocaust among those responsible likely involved lots of jokes about killing jews.

What about 9/11 jokes? Is that "terrorist culture?"

No doubt they are part of terrorist culture, do you really believe they have no jokes about it?

And no muslims were joking about 9/11 in new york after it happened in front of people that were effected and if they did, there would be objections.

You don't seem to be accounting for context at all.

[–]The03k3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

How do you know what it sounds like to a rapist?

"Right, they are against rape jokes because rapists hear what they do being depicted as funny, and to that rapist it in a way normalizes their behaviour. "

Good work using logic that applies to your own argument.

Do jokes about prison rape trivialize rape?

Who the fuck knows? Not you, or me, that's for sure.

We object to jokes about killing all men. There is no group of murder victims are going to strongly object to jokes at their expense, people object to Germans making jokes about murdering jews etc.

Everyone objects to some form of jokes. Some people hate puns, some people hate rape jokes, some people hate knock-knock jokes, etc.

Yeah, for example the culture surrounding the holocaust among those responsible likely involved lots of jokes about killing jews.

Are you implying that the holocaust is normalized/not seen as such a bad thing because people make jokes about it? Seriously?

No doubt they are part of terrorist culture, do you really believe they have no jokes about it?

...Are you trolling right now? I never said that anything but there not being jokes about 9/11. You also completely missed the point. Oh, and who the fuck is "they"? You said "No doubt they are part of terrorist culture". "They" being "9/11 jokes", least that would be how it's supposed to be. However, "do you really believe they have no jokes about it" is talking about a person or rather, group of people. Who is this group? Terrorists? People who make the 9/11 jokes?

And no muslims were joking about 9/11 in new york after it happened in front of people that were effected

You have no idea if that's true or not. Not to forget, it doesn't matter if they were in NY, and/or in front of people who affected by it, and/or if they made jokes about right after it happened.

Because context really doesn't matter.

[–]TRPACC-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

"Right, they are against rape jokes because rapists hear what they do being depicted as funny, and to that rapist it in a way normalizes their behaviour. " Good work using logic that applies to your own argument.

I just used the same argument they are. Its not my fault you don't know what their argument is and think its some sort of trick.

As for the rest, the context is going right over your head.

You are for men making rape jokes about women - they are normal and whats abnormal is objecting to them, to you.

Its a stupid thing to argue for.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I don't think you understood what I meant by "Good work using logic that applies to your own argument."

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The feminist argument about rape jokes is sound.

We only attack it because we don't really know what they are saying.

Then we go and object to jokes directed at men for similar but far more trivial reasons and become hypocrites.

There are huge advantages to understanding their arguments - being able to make a relevant counter argument being the main one.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The feminist argument about rape jokes is sound.

Not it isn't.

We only attack it because we don't really know what they are saying.

What a great generalization and assumption

Then we go and object to jokes directed at men for similar but far more trivial reasons and become hypocrites.

People do actually do that, but I object to them objecting. Why? Because they're just fucking jokes.

There are huge advantages to understanding their arguments - being able to make a relevant counter argument being the main one.

I do make relevant counter-arguments to theirs. Thing is though, you're generalizing every feminists argument, ever.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Not it isn't.

You don't know what it is so cannot make that call.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Again, generalizing every feminist argument, ever.

[–]TRPACC-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

..Are you trolling right now? I never said that anything but there not being jokes about 9/11.

Are there muslims telling jokes about killing Americans in 9/11?

Not in front of american audiences.

Are jokes about killing Americans in 9/11 part of the culture among terrorists?

Yes, most likely.

The context here is going right over your head because you don't know what the feminists arguments are.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Are there muslims telling jokes about killing Americans in 9/11?

"Not in front of american audiences." and you know that...how?

"Are jokes about killing Americans in 9/11 part of the culture among terrorists?" Like I said, you missed the point. I wasn't asking if 9/11 jokes were a part of terrorist culture, I was asking if anyone who makes jokes about 9/11, are now a part of "terrorist culture". Not actual terrorists themselves, making 9/11 jokes.

The context here is going right over your head because you don't know what the feminists arguments are.

I do. This argument isn't part of it.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

"Not in front of american audiences." and you know that...how?

Because there would be objections and news about it, some Americans would lose their shit.

This argument isn't part of it.

You chose 9/11 jokes as an example, I responded to your example.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

100% sure I'm being "trolled" right now. Eh, don't care.

Because there would be objections and news about it, some Americans would lose their shit.

You think there would be news about some muslim making a joke about 9/11? I know America's media is shit, but seriously?

You chose 9/11 jokes as an example, I responded to your example.

Speaking of responding to things... How ugh...how's it like to not respond to a lot of shit I've said so far?

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You have no understanding of the context.

Americans can joke with each other about 9/11 to help get over it.

Thats different from muslims joking in front of americans with americans as the butt when there are 9/11 victims and vets in the audience and those jokes being seen as normal.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Wow. You're not even trying to hide it anymore, are you? Your ugh..."trolling" I mean.

"Speaking of responding to things... How ugh...how's it like to not respond to a lot of shit I've said so far?"

People don't tend to blatantly ignore someone calling them out on ignoring things unless they're just fucking around.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Im not fucking around.

Its that you don't really know what you are talking about.

And it not worth hours and hours of typing.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You clearly are.

I do. You don't, however.

You keep arguing. We're still typing. So it's going to keep being hours.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

And if you had bothered to find out what you are talking about, you might have a more substantial argument against them than arguing for men telling rape jokes with female rape victims as the butt.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

And here you are, still generalizing feminists arguments as though they all say the same, exact thing.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What are you even talking about?

You find out what rape culture means, and use that knowledge to make a substantial argument against it

instead of arguing for men making rape jokes in front of rape victims and rapists that are men, and sounding like a cunt.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

No. I found out what you consider rape culture to be. You seem to think that your idea of "rape culture" is what every feminist, ever thinks is "rape culture".

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

A theory isn't something free form where people get to make up what it is while never finding out what it is.

It isn't what I think it is, its only what it is.

[–]The03k0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Except it's completely free form. Go ask around, go to /r/Feminism and ask what they define "rape culture" to be.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Its not.

There are as many feminists who don't really know what they are talking about as there are mra's.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It is.

Except it doesn't matter if they know what they're talking about. They have what they define as "rape culture" and that's all that matters.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

No.

If someone defines rape culture as a banana, it is has no bearing on how the actual theory works.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Of course it doesn't. However, that's what that person defines rape culture as. Which is why generalizing every feminist argument for rape culture, doesn't work. Just like the word "literally", even if it does have a set definition, that doesn't stop people from misusing it.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I'm not generalizing every feminist argument, most feminists cannot articulate what it is.

I'm talking about what the theory actually says.

[–]BlueDoorFour 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago* (41 children) | Copy Link

The mra impression is that that rape culture means the culture is openly and consciously supporting all rape including violent stranger rape, which is too absurd to be true.

Uh huh...

Since you didn't quote the definition in the article you linked...

Rape culture is the ways in which a society trivializes, rationalizes, or even condones rape and other acts of sexual violence.

Maybe some MRAs fit your impression of them. Since there's not central dogma to the MRM, it's hard to make any sweeping statements about them. However, I have yet to meet an MRA who believes your straw-strawman.

Personally, I can reject the concept on the definition you just gave. We do not live in a culture that trivializes, rationalizes, or condones rape or sexual violence (except when it's done to men, of course). It is hard to think of a crime taken more seriously, except maybe if the victim is a child.

In any case, what RAINN rejects is the usefulness of the concept in combating sexual violence. It is a crime, committed by criminals, and taken very, very seriously by the public. To pretend that society doesn't care about women -- when it cares especially about women -- is to deceive and fearmonger.

[–]TRPACC -4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (40 children) | Copy Link

Rape culture is the ways in which a society trivializes, rationalizes, or even condones rape and other acts of sexual violence.

Right, mra's read this and think they are claiming that people have been openly and consciously supporting violent stranger rape

Thats the mra interpretation.

[–]DAE_FAP 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (39 children) | Copy Link

Wow, the straw is flying out your ass today.

We do not live in a society that trivializes marital, date, stranger, or any other forms except prison rape.

You seem to be projecting your own idea that rape is only done by strangers. Most of us are well aware that rape comes in many forms by many types of perpetrators, and they are all taken seriously, except prison rape.

For fucks sake, has a feminist hacked your account? You're usually one of the more reasonable people in this sub.

The people who trivialize the rape of women are in a tiny minority.

That being said, we most certainly live in a rape culture. However, it is not rooted in misogyny as the definition you linked claims.

[–]TRPACC-2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

We do not live in a society that trivializes marital, date, stranger, or any other forms except prison rape.

So your argument is that none of the jokes about rape trivialize rape, except prison rape jokes.

You seem to be projecting your own idea that rape is only done by strangers

No, Im saying mras thing their argument is that the culture openly supports violent stranger rape.

[–]BlueDoorFour3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So your argument is that none of the jokes about rape trivialize rape, except prison rape jokes.

Jokes don't trivialize tragedies. Humor helps us cope with the horror of the world. Jokes about the holocaust, 9/11, North Korea, rape, racism... they're funny (to some) because they take a serious topic and treat it lightly. This may look like trivialization, but if the comedian or audience were to actually trivialize the subject, then the joke would lose its humor. The humor stems from the irony in casually handling such a heavy subject.

The only rape jokes you hear in an unironic, non-shock sense are jokes about prison rape.

No, Im saying mras thing their argument is that the culture openly supports violent stranger rape.

MRAs are mostly in line with Christina Hoff Sommers's views on this, and not the dead horse you've been beating.

[–]TRPACC-3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So the rules change when its prison rape, kill all men, boys are stupid through rocks at them etc.

Jokes don't trivialize tragedies. Humor helps us cope with the horror of the world. Jokes about the holocaust,

Typically not when its germans joking with jews at the butt and victims and nazis in the audience.

9/11,

Typically not when its Muslims making the joke with americans at the butt and victims and terrorists in the audience.

racism

White comedians joking about lynching in front of a black audiences, with black victims as the butt would go down like a lead balloon.

[–]The03k5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Except "kill all men" and "boys are stupid through rocks at them" was a hate thing, not a joke. People now use those for jokes, but it's still a hate movement type of a thing. Also, realize the difference between these jokes. Rape jokes are different from "Lol, I'm kill all men they're useless anyway". What's the difference? Well, rape jokes are jokes about someone getting raped or something of the like. "Kill all men" is like going "I'm going to kill a political leader" and then getting shocked when people don't like it. One can easily be taken as a real threat, while the other can't.

[–]TRPACC-2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Boys are stupid throw rocks at them is nothing to do with feminism.

Well, rape jokes are jokes about someone getting raped or something of the like.

Ok, so that's normal and rape victims have no business objecting ... and a rapist cannot interpret this as society trivializing his crimes and to a victim trivializing what happened to them.

Kill all men" is like going "I'm going to kill a political leader" and then getting shocked when people don't like it.

Im going to break off here now because you are just making things up as you go along and you are a hypocrite.

Kill all men is trolling people who are going to take it seriously and its supposed to be feminists making fun of their man hating reputation. The real irony is lost on them.

[–]The03k4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Boys are stupid throw rocks at them is nothing to do with feminism.

Never even mentioned feminism in that reply to you.

Ok, so that's normal and rape victims have no business objecting ... and a rapist cannot interpret this as society trivializing his crimes and to a victim trivializing what happened to them.

No need for the sarcasm. Never said rape victims have no business objecting. Also, a rapist interpreting it as society trivializing his crimes has nothing to do with this.

Im going to break off here now because you are just making things up as you go along and you are a hypocrite.

No idea what I made up.

Kill all men is trolling people who are going to take it seriously and its supposed to be feminists making fun of their man hating reputation. The real irony is lost on them.

To some. To others, it's a legitimate thing. People, out there, legitimately think men are useless and that they should die. Also, feminists making fun of their man hating reputation by saying all men should die, is like a rapist making fun of his rapist reputation by saying all women should be raped.

[–]TRPACC-2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Never even mentioned feminism in that reply to you.

You didn't mention it specifically.

Except "kill all men" and "boys are stupid through rocks at them" was a hate thing, not a joke. People now use those for jokes, but it's still a hate movement type of a thing. The context is going right over your head.

Feminists haven't killed all men, there is no issue with girls throwing stones at boys because they are stupid.

Unlike men making jokes about rape in which rape victims are the butt, in front of rape victims and rapists.

This whole context thing is alluding you, and you are a hypocrite.

[–]The03k3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I didn't mention it, at all.

The context is going right over your head.

Then explain it to me.

Feminists haven't killed all men, there is no issue with girls throwing stones at boys because they are stupid.

Now, you're the one bringing up feminists. Also, saying "Feminists haven't killed all men" is really stupid. You make it seem as though they have to have had "completed their objective" (The killing of all men) for it to be bad.

Unlike men making jokes about rape in which rape victims are the butt, in front of rape victims and rapists.

Already explained the difference. "Kill all men" can easily be taken as a real, threat. While a joke where a girl, boy, whatever, gets raped or whatever, cannot. It doesn't matter if they are in front of rape victims or rapists.

No idea how I'm a hypocrite. I even said that I'm against the people who are against jokes on any side.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

No you idiot.

The context is different.

Are male victims of feminist murder objecting to feminists joking about killing men?

Have some killed men and are now others are insisting on joking about it?

Both are bad, one is more trivial than the other.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The context is different.

Didn't I tell you to explain to me the context then?

Are male victims of feminist murder objecting to feminists joking about killing men?

...What. "male victims of feminist murder". They're victims of murder. They're dead. They can't object to jokes about it.

Have some killed men and are now others are insisting on joking about it?

I believe that some feminists have actually killed men, even some rather famous ones.

"Valerie Jean Solanas (April 9, 1936 – April 25, 1988) was an American radical feminist writer who is best known for the SCUM Manifesto, as well as the attempted murder of artist Andy Warhol."

Eh, close enough.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Didn't I tell you to explain to me the context then?

I have many times. Context is beyond you.

There are no murder victims at the butt of the kill all men joke.

Unlike a kill all jews joke told by germans.

[–]The03k2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You haven't.

There doesn't have to be. "Kill all men" could easily be taken as a threat. That's all there is to it.

I never said I was against "boys are stupid throw rocks at them". I said that rape jokes in front of rape victims isn't the same as "boys are stupid throw rocks at them". Why? As I've been saying. One can be taken as a threat, the other can't.

Right, you are saying one is a problem and the other couldn't possibly be.

You argued that the joke merchandise and the trolling hash tags could be taken as threats and therefore were more serious.

In a conversation where you are arguing that men telling rape jokes in which female rape victims are the but, are not a problem and can in no way trivialize rape.

Because it doesn't trivialize rape. If it did, then rape wouldn't be considered worse than murder to people.

[–]TRPACC0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Because it doesn't trivialize rape. If it did, then rape wouldn't be considered worse than murder to people.

This is nonsense. Date rape is often trivialized in jokes, and simultaneously seen as worse than murder - so long as its violent stranger rape.

You are saying this

doesn't trivialize rape, that's a shit argument that falls flat on its face.

And there are devastating arguments to make against rape culture feminists, but because we don't know what it is we can't identify them and tend to make stupid arguments for rape jokes and the like instead.

[–]BlueDoorFour3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So the rules change when its prison rape, kill all men, boys are stupid through rocks at them etc.

No, and I didn't bring up two of those. Let's look at these one by one.

prison rape

The only kind of commonly-accepted rape-themed humor that is at the expense of the victim. Can you see the difference between jokes at the expense of the victims of a crime and jokes that, for shock value, make light of a serious topic?

kill all men, boys are stupid throw rocks at them

Do you really think MRAs believe that the majority of feminists want to kill all men, or condone violence? These jokes are annoying because they expose a double standard in attitudes about violence, and because they are not made with irony. It's more of the old "ugh, men are the worst" attitude and it's exhausting because it's pervasive and normalized. Some might even say it stems from hatred. I think it's just a self-justified anger against "the oppressors."

White comedians joking about lynching in front of a black audiences, with black victims as the butt would go down like a lead balloon.

As would either of the other examples you gave. Obviously. That's why you don't hear comedians joke like that. You also don't hear about comedians joking about raping audience members and then walking away with their careers, or faces, intact.

Now, people might make jokes at the expense of victims in private conversation. Not really my style of humor... but it works something like this: Neither of them has endured that tragedy. They are both shocked by the horrors of the world. Yet, for a moment, they can acknowledge it and not let it completely depress them. It's a way of coping with a harsh and unforgiving world, and it hurts NOBODY.

And if you think it does... show me the study that links rape jokes to increased rates of perpetration. Not to a more cavalier attitude toward rape -- show me where people joking about the subject actually led to it happening more.

[–]TRPACC-1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's why you don't hear comedians joke like that. You also don't hear about comedians joking about raping audience members and then walking away with their careers, or faces, intact.

It happened recently, he said he hope someone was gangraped after they objected to him joking with female rape victims as the butt, and the only reason their careers are threatened is because of people quite rightly objecting to them.

You are using double standards to argue for men making rape jokes with female rape victims as the butt.

Its a retarded thing to argue for.

Its like arguing that jews have no business objecting to germans telling them jokes about the holocaust, with jews being killed as the the butt of the joke.

If you want to make an argument against rape culture, find out what it is and make an argument, instead of arguing for men telling rape jokes with female rape victims at the butt.

You can raise the quality of your counter argument from that, to something relevant simply by finding out what rape culture is and then making a counter argument.

Daniel Tosh? He got in huge trouble for that.

You are using double standards to argue for men making rape jokes with female rape victims as the butt.

Prove it. Show me how I did that. I suspect you aren't even reading my responses.

Its a retarded thing to argue for.

It would be, if I'd done that. Read again, carefully.

Its like arguing that jews have no business objecting to germans telling them jokes about the holocaust, with jews being killed as the the butt of the joke.

Of course they have business objecting to it. Again, these jokes are not for everyone. I would, however, counter if they were to claim that (a) Such jokes would lead to another holocaust or (b) perpetuated an anti-semitic culture.

If you want to make an argument against rape culture, find out what it is and make an argument, instead of arguing for men telling rape jokes with female rape victims at the butt.

What I said:

Now, people might make jokes at the expense of victims in private conversation. Not really my style of humor... but it works something like this: Neither of them has endured that tragedy. They are both shocked by the horrors of the world. Yet, for a moment, they can acknowledge it and not let it completely depress them. I'm not advocating that comedians make careers at the expense of the victims of horrible tragedies. I'm offering an explanation of why some people make such horrible jokes, in private, out of earshot of those who would be offended by them.

You can raise the quality of your counter argument from that, to something relevant simply by finding out what rape culture is and then making a counter argument.

You're repeating yourself. I have educated myself on the concept of rape culture.

[–]TRPACC1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Daniel Tosh? He got in huge trouble for that.

Right, because people object like they would object to white people joking about lynching black people, with black people being murdered as the joke and like we object to prison rape jokes.

You're repeating yourself. I have educated myself on the concept of rape culture.

Then why are you arguing about men making rape jokes with women as the but of the joke.

Surely of you educated yourself about it, you would be making some relevant and devastating argument to their rape culture theory, surely you wouldn't be making these mistakes with context if you understood their arguments.

[–]BlueDoorFour1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Then why are you arguing about men making rape jokes with women as the but of the joke.

For the third time, that is not what I'm arguing.

Surely of you educated yourself about it, you would be making some relevant and devastating argument to their rape culture theory, surely you wouldn't be making these mistakes with context if you understood their arguments.

So... I disagree with you, therefore I must not understand. Brilliant.

What mistakes of context? I'm not presenting my arguments against the usefulness of rape culture as a model for the western world. RAINN has done that for me. I'm arguing with you because you continue to mangle my words to fit your straw-MRA mold, and making brazen assumptions about my point of view.

[–]TRPACC1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Is germans joking about murdering jews in front of jews the way jews might use humour to cope with the holocaust, or is it different?

If jews object should they just accept its their own way of coping?

[–]BlueDoorFour1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Is germans joking about murdering jews in front of jews the way jews might use humour to cope with the holocaust, or is it different?

Well, your grammar truly is a mindfuck. Anyone can joke about a tragedy.

If jews object should they just accept its their own way of coping?

As a Jew, fuck you. If German schoolboys want to make holocaust jokes, I don't care. If a German politician cracked such a joke in a campaign speech, then we might have a problem. How do you not see the difference?

[–]TRPACC1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So you are basically saying

the holocaust has just happened and there is a comedy event. 20% of the audience are survivors, 6% murdered and mistreated jews.

A german is up on stage making jokes about killing jews.

And that would be all cool and its really just the way Jews cope with the holocaust - sitting there listening to germans joke about murdering them.

And it doesn't in any way trivialize it.

And jewish groups would never object to this and if they do they are idiots.

I think the words "unfortunate trend" and of course "rape culture" being closed-off by quotation marks more strongly suggests that RAINN sees your argument as the problematic one.

[–]TRPACC -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Its obvious that they see "rape culture" dominating the discussion as being problematic, thats why they said what they said.

They basically said while its important to talk about these things, its best not to lose sight of x, y z.

[–]MakeItHilts 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No, what I mean is: RAINN sees "rape culture" as specifically NOT a part of sexual assaults on college campuses or anywhere else. And putting the term in quotation marks probably disavows the theory -- not simply as something which shouldn't "dominate the discussion" lest we lose sight of whatever x, y, and z might happen to be. Whatever insight you have into the "feminist definition" of "rape culture" is obviously something Brett Sokolow would have as well; it's something he wants to get rid of, which this author is applauding.

Patting yourself on the back relentlessly like this for being the sole MRA who "gets" the true definition of a shaky, malleable, fact-denying social theory seems truly odd.

[–]TRPACC -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

You won't find RAINN saying there is no such thing as the things they call rape culture.

They won't deny there is a tendency towards victim blaming for example.

You won't find mra's saying there is no such thing as the things they call rape culture as they pertain to men, quite the reverse - but we refuse to find out what it is and so don't even know we are often in agreement with it, as it pertains to men.

You can actually prove that feminism and RAINN promotes what is known as rape culture, if you know what it is in the first place.

This is the sort of argument we miss out on by refusing to find out what it is.

[–]MakeItHilts 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Please stop down-talking to all MRAs. Our society is awash in rape culture-speak. Everybody on this subreddit knows what "rape culture" is -- even your special, insider definition. We aren't "missing out" due to our stubborn refusal to play ball. I think part of the reason the MR Movement exists at all is because there is no pushback -- in the mainstream -- against the supremacy of "rape" in our society.

You claim that victims tend to be swiftly blamed. You simply assert this. But what have we seen? The opposite. A claim of rape is practically pounced on like it's a golden ticket. The claims of "victims" are taken so seriously that, in our two most famous recent examples, merely telling a story ... a story with no evidence of any kind ... with which the "victim" refuses to co-operate investigatively ... is enough to suspend all fraternal organizations at a university, convince a mainstream publication to abdicate fundamental reporting, and basically egg the entire U.S. on to lynch the guys at the fraternity in question ... Or a rape accusation -- even after having failed to clear the low bar of a campus tribunal -- will nevertheless bring a girl to the State of the Union and shower her with awards for her bravery. This "victim" just gave a talk at Brown University that is filled with the spookiest illogical assertions an educated person can make (and I seriously doubt she was called on them):

http://i.imgur.com/q5C6bS2.png

Here's something I find much more grounded in the reality of our particular universe:

http://blog.oup.com/2013/07/myths-about-rape-myths/

The author, a reader in law at Oxford, set out to find out why, with rape laws in the UK having been reformed (read: toughened), and with rates of reporting consequentially having gone way up, have conviction rates for rape nevertheless remained static? The commonly-held answer to that question seems to be that "we" hold various "rape myths." Or suspect our fellow citizens of holding them. That is, that people "don't even know what rape is." Or something similar to what you're saying: that we don't even know what "rape culture" is, and our refusal to find out speaks ill of us.

But the author of the study, which scrutinizes beliefs like "People blame rape victims, even when they believe them," shows how fundamentally unreal they are. I suspect that your unique, insider's knowledge of "rape culture" itself relies on "myth myths."

And as far as "the things [MRAs] call rape culture" goes ... MRAs don't use the expression. At least, I sure as hell don't. Like "toxic masculinity," it's utterly cheap. It's a debate tactic used to pummel your opponent with anything but the merits of your argument -- and which sits upon a premise that the world is founded on a "hatred of women" ... which is goofballery of an epic stature. It's pure victimhood-confirmation bias. Here in the West, at least, the reality is the opposite. The White House relays false statistics; commissions and grants are funded every day to fight "hypermasculinity" and to "teach our boys not to rape" ... This is snake oil; and it's very disconcerting that no-one who is taken seriously (i.e., conservatives ... or whoever is foolhardy enough to risk the backlash) can counteract the power of the victim narrative.

Generally, nobody on this sub reddit knows what rape culture means.

Thats why we aren't using any of the devastating arguments against it and instead argue foolish things like supporting men making rape jokes with female rape victims as the butt thinking its some actual counter argument and then later on up-vote a post calling someone out for making a joke about raping men in prison.

Its also why we unknowingly and often say what feminists call rape culture as it pertains to men exists.

Thats the cost of debating against something nuanced without first finding out what it is.
