Russel Crowe says that older female actors shouldn't demand only 'young' roles, but also 'old' ones, like he does himself. Of course, the Jezebel writer only reads the examples mr Crowe gives and harpoons them to death: "Oh, he said that old women should not reject all the roles that let them play old people, like they are? So all old actresses should shut up and take sexist roles? All actresses should play old spinsters, and the only role women have in reality is to fornicate?! Mah soggy knee!"

Why is this strange? I see women go for very much older men. They have much more money than the men their own age. Men usually want women their own age, problem is when woman reaches 40 years old she has simply enormous list of demands.

There's another component to this as well that no one really mentions, and that's that Hollywood is FLOOOOODED with amazing looking young women. Having dabbled in modeling, and having worked in the film industry, I can tell you that there are absolutely stunningly gorgeous girls at the age of 14 who are trying to get into the industry. There are about 9 billion 18-26 year old gorgeous girls trying to get into the industry, and having cast plenty of women, women are just generally easier to cast for a role. It's much easier to find an attractive girl who can express emotion than it is to find a man.

Think of the number of good Hollywood actors from the ages of 18-26, male, that you enjoy watching and consider good actors. Now think of all the young female actors you know and can name who you enjoy watching. The list is much longer.

It's actually much harder to be a successful young male actor in Hollywood than it is to get work as a young female actress. This is a double edged sword, as the beginning of a young woman's career will be easier, as she can just snag an agent to do modeling and print or commercial bullshit or a soap or tv show much easier than a man, but her longevity can suffer if she isn't versatile or very talented. As soon as her looks start to suffer, if she's not incredibly talented in pulling in an audience, there's about 900 other women there to take her place.

But look at someone like Christian Bale. He's been acting since he was like 12 or some shit in that Spielberg movie, and he has been in a lot of movies and is consistent. Look at him in Batman. How many other actors can you see in that role? Look what happened to the internet when Affleck was announced. The whole world went nuts with speculation of how he was probably gonna suck. Look at Tom Cruise. How many other male actors could pull off Tom's most recent movies? He's genuinely the only male actor really left who can carry a blockbuster on his own and pull in an audience. How many people could replace Will Smith? These are men who have forged a career on amazing talent and hard work and are able to carry a film and are difficult to replace. There are far more "movie star" women than there are men, but it's much more difficult to reach that status as a man.

It's just two different worlds, and the sad fact is that the entertainment industry is completely over-saturated with young gorgeous girls who are there to snag your job as soon as they can.

The problem with older women in hollywood is that hollywood is trying to make money. We live in a society where younger men are less likely to be sexualized (women prefer to date/marry/have sex with older men), and older women are less likely to be sexualized (men prefer younger women).

Sex sells, so older women and younger men get fewer roles. Look at how many men start off in minor/joke roles, hit 35/40, and then are considered great actors all of a sudden. Ben Affleck and Matthew Mcconaughey are perfect recent examples.

Not saying there is no room in hollywood for younger men or older women, but they are very typecasted.

On the one hand, I'm sympathetic to the argument that there are less roles for older women because the ingenue is definitely favored, on the other hand that misquote was so fucking malicious that I don't really feel like extending an olive branch.
