I finally talked with a divorce attorney, which I highly recommend. It both brought the process down to earth and was very educational. I felt much less stressed after it.

The main thing, my wife shows no interest in getting a lawyer or even learning about the process. Should I continue with the lawyer and see if she just signs the separation agreement or get an arbitrator? I want to get the best deal for myself without screwing her over, but I also don't want to spend a lot.

Another question is can a judge just step in a modify and agreement, even if both parties have signed it?

Finally, can alimony be set up to match current employment? For example, I have a good salary now, but if I lose my job and income is there a way to quickly adjust alimony to match that or would I simply be in violation of the agreement because I can't pay and open to whatever legal repercussions there were?

One thing is we have 2 children, one is 19 and the other is 16. I don't think the 16 would want to live with her at all.
