I make just above median income in the US. Over time my wife’s physical and mental health issues have become unbearable. We have been in a relationship for 20 years, married 13 years, owned a home together for 12 years, have one daughter of 11 years. My wife is a stay at home mom because she has a back injury, substance abuse issues and pretty severe mental health issues. She has $15,000 in medical debt, but marriage makes it my responsibility also. She should be on disability, But has never pursued it. She also will not seek mental health treatment. Her alcoholism makes her abusive and I’ve felt stuck for so long because I’m afraid the court will give her custody of our daughter or make me pay alimony. I have a 401k with about 50k in it. But, We are barely hanging onto our home in this strange economy. I just want keep my daughter safe, and keep the home that I put so much work into, and that my daughter has called home her whole life. But I’m afraid that I will lose everything and be stuck in a small apartment barely surviving. I haven’t contacted a lawyer yet. Can anyone out there give me some hope?
