This is forgetting some context in the lives of women from poor neighborhoods or cities and women of color, whom both because of classism and racism are treated and seen as “less than” by a lot of men. A Black or Latina woman can be “leveled up”, in her business suit on break from her baller job and all, and will still be catcalled walking around Manhattan going to get lunch. Yes, this sentiment is generally true, and I’ve experienced this myself, but I’ve also experienced the other example because I can’t escape how a lot of men see women of color.

I can attest to this personally. When I’m leveled up I get fewer cat calls but more stares and higher qualities attention that I actually have to deal with bc they’re being respectful. When I’m dressed down I get losers hollering at me which is frankly easier to ignore so a lot of times I dress like that on purpose bc I don’t want to deal with people 😅

Most men are like stunned mullets or hapless dimwits when I smile big and converse with them, especially when I look them steadily in the eyes (I do this on purpose to put them off), they can’t hold my gaze and always look away first. Often they seem to get embarrassed then give me preferential treatment for whatever it is I have to interact with them for. I’m always “on”, warm and polite but concise and direct at the same time with a hint of sweetness. This blended attitude seems to confuse them and keep them in place on their best behaviour.

People have told me before that I can be intimidating. Though I’m petite and look cute, I’ve learned how to carry myself in a way that projects confidence so most men don’t try me because they know I’ll shut them down. Only dopey or truly confident men will ever ask me out in person now which is fine by me.

I don’t agree when it comes to being hit on in public. Men are opportunists and many of them literally do not have any respect for who’s in whose league. They have the audacity to try to hit on amazing women whilst being cave trolls. They think they’re entitled to tell us to smile, or that we have nice tits. No amount of smart clothes will put them off, they’ll just say ‘she’s a stuck up bitch but she’s still shaggable’.

Levelling up does of course work in other areas eg when actually interacting with one that you’re interested in...he’ll know when he’s outclassed.

Age has a lot to do with it too. I was a lot more awkward, geeky and chubby in my early 20s but I was a major creep magnet. I also had no spine back then and had no idea how to really look good. I had bad acne. But creeps gravitate toward the young ones who look easy to push around. It’s not always about how hot the girl is.

I’m middle aged now but look better; I’m a healthy weight and have learned how to dress myself and wear makeup. No wrinkles yet thanks to genes and no more acne thanks to good skin care. I have a lot more confidence too and surprise, no creepers anywhere to be seen.

I think they're more likely to notice if a woman has confidence or is able to defend herself. Girls 13-17 get the most catcalls because theyre scared and dont understand boundaries and men know that. why does this sound victim-blaming to me lol

I’m a lawyer in my late 20s, fairly attractive, and make good money in a huge city. I work out and have an RBF. I’m giving this info as a context to paint a picture that I neither look nor am tolerant of bullshit.

Yet I still get cat-called when I’m walking down sketchy alleys, have men with kids DMing me on Instagram, and get pestered by a bum literally stalking me and sitting in front of courthouses to the point where I had to get officers remove him. I don’t know how much further I’m supposed to “level up” according to this logic, because I, along with other competent and professional women out there, are “easy” and inviting trouble from asswipes. This effectively is saying some women deserve more so than others to be treated in a certain way. Very questionable and dangerous message; the problem is with them, not with us. 🤷🏻‍♀️
