Maybe I'm in the minority here but I would put this as an "oddball flag" rather than a "red flag" If he paid for everything and didn't give off cheap vibes.

First dates are hard. People have weird quirks. Nervous people act strangely sometimes. I'd rather have a guy that socially fumbles a bit but treats me well than a guy who is perfectly smooth all the time. I believe you can have high standards but also give guys a bit of grace for these minor slip ups.

That being said, if you got cheap red flags, or just didn't spark with him, than there is no point in analyzing it further.

That is odd. If you liked him and he was courteous maybe try another date and see what he is like. Maybe he was nervous.

in seriousness, maybe he was so nervous he was poorly and couldn't eat. maybe see how it goes. not necessarily lvm behaviour but definitely weird.

Maybe the smoothie was a little too high fiber for him and he was uncomfortable in his stomach?

Something similar happened to me once - not a smoothie but I was supposed to go a movie and dinner afterwards and the movie popcorn just hit me in the worst way that I was soooo bloated and didn’t anything (maybe I tried one edamame) and had sips of a ginger ale...

I would find it odd as well. Even if you’re not hungry, manners dictate that you eat together because otherwise it’s awkward. Did he have good manners otherwise?

It might be he's fussy or has intolerances and is embarrassed by it. A lot of people don't want to be that person making a fuss in public. It can be tough finding things you can eat sometimes. I'm more likely to strop than not eat though.

Did you check he has teeth?

Well, sometimes I just don't want to eat when I go out lol But I also am a tiny woman with low appetite, never noticed this behaviour in men

I’d be like okay I’m eating anyway. But would still feel weird if he paid and didn’t eat. However, it was nice of him to pay although the didn’t eat haha! Maybe he was nervous, or genuinely not hungry.

It could be that he only had enough money in his budget to pay for you. If that's the case, I would take it as a very good sign. No one thing means a man is HV, but a willingness to endure hunger and stretch his budget for you while hiding the sacrifice is a good thing.

I think it's weird. I don't know if it's red flag weird, but it's awkward weird. I think whether or not it's a red flag depends partly on his age.

The question you have to ask yourself is this: In 2020, are you willing to give weird, awkward X-year old guys the benefit of the doubt?

I think it's weird. If he was fasting or had stomach issues or something, he should have just politely said that to you. If he cant tell you something as simple as that then why bother? Maybe it is a fetish like someone else said and he gets off on watching you/other women eat. I'd be weirded out and not see him again. Trust your instincts ALWAYS!

Could be a food allergy or intolerance. I have Celiac disease and will often forgo eating dinner at a restaurant I haven't been to before.

And I won't always tell someone I am newly dating about the Celiac disease, either.

I see this as weird. If he was sick or whatever and didn’t want to tell you he would have ordered something and then just not touched it or pretended to take sips. Idk what it means but strange for sure. You mention his hands were shaking - could this be a drug thing?
