Hi Ladies,
I have found your advice beyond helpful as I work on self development and uplevelling my life after my pickmeisha days. However, I think I still fall into a few 'old me' traps and have struggled to find an FDS perspective on how to counter this. Specifically:
How do I become more assertive the FDS way?
'Niceness' is the only tool taught and known to me. This impacts me at work, in my friendships, and in my relationships. I have no difficulty calling out bad behaviours and speaking up for myself once I've had time to reflect, or if the behaviour is obviously bad. But when it comes to day-to-day interactions with colleagues and friends, I make myself small so they feel big.
For example: A new female colleague employed at the same level of seniority as me is taking control of my domain at work, organising meetings with my stakeholders, presenting on my area without my knowledge. My reaction is to say 'That's completely ok', 'I appreciate the help', 'You're amazing at this stuff' but tbh she's repeating my ideas as her own and tanking my projects through her casual comments.
For example: During coffee catch ups, my good girlfriend makes passing negative remarks about relationships, work, etc. Interesting chats- all good! But sometimes the examples she draws on seem to apply to me, e.g. 'He was only a management consultant and so adds no real value at work compared to my boyfriend' (I was a MC).
I am reluctant to pick up just any self help book on the subject- most seem written by men and/or use humour to pass on the message. I've checked out the FDS book list but this topic doesn't appear to be covered. I want to be told straight - why and how do I become more 'assertive' (or whatever the correct descriptor is) in my day to day life. I like books/articles/advice that speak to my values- which is why I'm here!
Please let me know your thoughts!
