Right now I teach 7 year olds in a low income area where many women have kids young (I’m 26) - and have been asked lots of times by the girls in my class why I am not married/have a boyfriend. I have been very open that I am happy being single and have talked about all the exciting experiences (like leisure travel, working in different countries, volunteering) I’ve had that might not have been possible with a husband! Now lots of the girls have ambitions for high flying jobs and say ‘I want to be single like you miss lollykpops!’ It won’t break the cycle for all of them but if I can counterbalance the ideology in the community to marry young, stay at home and pop out more kids than you can afford for just ONE girl I’ll be proud.

[–]Consistent-Ask-7291FDS Newbie 160 points161 points162 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I love this. Thank you from me too miss Lollykpops.

As a side note I rarely hear talk about Miss/Mrs. and how terribly oppressive and discriminating that is. Imagine if we categorized men (and also called them boys instead of men like we do to women!) by whether or not they had secured a woman! Imagine if we pronounced it Miz if he is single and Mister if he is married. How dehumanizing. I wish this was talked about more and something was done to alter the language in a way to make it equal.

[–]lollykpopsFDS Newbie 80 points81 points82 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think part of the reason why the kids ask me about my romantic prospects is I am firm about being called ‘miss’ lol..they automatically revert to Mrs (name) because they associate adult with marriage. If a child calls me Mrs Lollykpops (which they do often) I just gently say ‘I’m not Mrs lollykpops, that’s my mums name!’

[–]Consistent-Ask-7291FDS Newbie 68 points69 points70 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They probably don’t even know what Mrs implies.

If anything mens worth should be defined by if any woman agreed to marry him or not. If a woman, despite being economically, politically, and socially being disadvantaged is STILL not willing to marry that man, that fact alone makes a loud and clear statement about that man!

[–]MissSommerFDS Newbie 55 points56 points57 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In the Porto city area (Portugal), they just call everyone "Menina" (Miss), even if you are a 100 yo matriarch. I loved living there.

I love Porto!

Great point, this is something I hadn’t thought of before. Why do married women need to be differentiated by the “mrs.” title? It should be rid off since it means the woman “belongs” to a man by law according to patriarchy.

Mrs. Hislastname. makes me fucking rage

[–]StrainingMyNeurons 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What about the past versions, when the woman would lose her identity entirely and would be Mrs John Smith? TF you calling me John for? Do I look like I have a hairy chest and a beer gut?

[–]CarpedictumFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don’t use it- Ms. for all.

Or Dr., of course. This is the ultimate FU to that system and I recommend it highly!

[–]cmil7731FDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What do you think of the Miss/Ms distinction? I've always gone by Miss, however am seeing benefits to going by Ms as it doesn't reference male ownership. However I also don't want to be buying into a social convention that once you're a 'certain age' you change from Miss to Ms...

🙌 wow, you sound like an amazing woman with that attitude, that life experience, and that job! Those girls are lucky to have you as their teacher!

[–]lollykpopsFDS Newbie 35 points36 points37 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s not my forever job and I’ll actually be leaving again after this year- to go back to my previous line of work in travel once COVID has lessened but it’s certainly been a learning experience.

[–]jasmine-blossom 39 points40 points41 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s so awesome that you’re setting an example as an alternative to social convention. When I was a little girl, I always envisioned my life as an adult as one of independence and singleness. I never considered having a husband, and I never really considered dating or fantasized about any kind of romance. Even though this was naturally how I thought of myself in my life, I had zero examples of adult women who lived this way, and I felt like there was something wrong with me for being who I am. I feared growing up for many reasons, but one major reason was the fear that I would have to adapt to what other people expected of me regarding relationships. I would have benefitted so much from having just one adult woman in my life who could have reassured me that the way I thought of my future was a real possibility, and more than that, a gift. You are doing a very good service by being that example.

[–]blilolaFDS Newbie 205 points206 points207 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

This is so true. Learning to be single this past year has been so hard! I’m slowly undoing the internalised patriarchy/ misogyny that demonised female singlehood. Initially when I was doing activities/ levelling up ie. hiking, french lessons, I was doing it because I wanted to ensure that I was able to appeal to men. And also “accidentally” bump into the love of my life. But through growth and self discovery, I have been learning that I am the love of my life. And investing in myself isn’t to find a man (that may be a bonus), but its about finding me.

[–]uptownxthotFDS Newbie 96 points97 points98 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

wow, are you me? i’m finally at a point where i’ve accepted singlehood and if i never end up getting married or having kids, i’ll be perfectly okay. i still don’t think there’s anything wrong with women genuinely wanting romantic love, marriage, and motherhood though. i just feel we shouldn’t deem one life path as a failure for women and the other to be what’s expected.

[–]blilolaFDS Newbie 57 points58 points59 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You’re really lucky to have realised that a lot sooner.

I’m embarrassed to say this, but when I started my level up journey I just wanted to date/ meet men. And levelling up seemed like the best way. But even in that time doing those things wasn’t linked to my joy or satisfaction but men. Even in my level up, pickmeisha still had to come through.

I would still love to be in a relationship one day. But the thought of not being in one doesn’t fill me with dread or anxiety. Being single used to feel like a punishment for not being “feminine” enough or not positioning myself better. But now my singleness is no longer loneliness, just more time to love, be with myself and enjoy my community.

[–]uptownxthotFDS Newbie 24 points25 points26 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i definitely spent the last two years trying to level up for that reason as well. you’re not alone! my journey has been rough and i’m pretty sure i’ll still make plenty of mistakes in my future lmao.

[–]cmil7731FDS Newbie 21 points22 points23 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Me too, and me too 😊 we’re on this journey together!

[–]i2aminspired 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But through growth and self discovery, I have been learning that

I

am the love of my life.

It's a wonderful feeling, isn't it? ❤️

I'm glad more women are wising up. I remember I was at a baby shower for one of my friends and an older lady asked me if I wanted to have kids. I kinda shrugged and didn't answer, but she out of nowhere just said "yes you do!" I was like "wtf". I was barely in my last year of college, marriage and kids were not my concern.

Another time, one of my family members asked "you don't want to have a nice companion?" 😒. I was still fresh out of college, mind you. I never understood the fascination. I have a friend who is the same age as me (30). She's married with two kids (7,4). She dropped out of college to get married and have kids. She's always wanted kids, but I wish she had waited and gotten a degree or something.

It also doesn't help that mom always says you miss out when you don't have kids. Miss out on what? I can't miss something I don't really want. Motherhood just doesn't appeal to me and the quality of men are in a sewer in hell.

There's other things I want to do; make more money, own a home, visit every continent twice 😅. But that's just me. I wish people would just stop trying to tell us what to value in life and let us live. We only get one life and I live my life the way I see fit. I don't need a man and kids for happiness. I just like being in the moment.

[–]seraphinelysionFDS Apprentice 54 points55 points56 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

"you don't want to have a nice companion?"

I do. But men aren't nice. What else you got? 🙄

[–]EricaeatscarrotsFDS Newbie 50 points51 points52 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And you know what? It’ll never be enough for these people giving unsolicited comments..I birthed 2 boys, but lost my first son many years ago, I don’t tell new people about him so if I meet new people and they ask me if I have kids I say 1 boy. I’ve been divorced 14 years. My son is getting older now. Im 40. FORTY. I STILL get comments, even yesterday, by a new co-worker “ooo you have to try for a girl. I’ll pray for you for your girl”. Like dude, my baby making days are long over. You don’t know the history of my life. What’s wrong with a woman wanting to do more than just push out multiple babies for her entire existence?!

[–]Throwawayrightaway28FDS Newbie 37 points38 points39 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And the goalpost is always moving! I have friends and relatives who have multiple children and people STILL find a way to make that a negative! You have four kids? Oh, the youngest is a boy, better have another so the youngest is a girl, the youngest can’t be a boy! Oh, you have five kids? Better have another so you have an even amount of boys and girls. And yes, these are real comments. People want women to be baby factories.

[–]goatismycopilot 72 points73 points74 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I have been in mixed company a few times and when the subject of dating and marriage come up the men ( we are all older) get so offended when I say I am much happier single and don't even want to date and would never get married again. One of the guys asked if I longed for companionship and I said yes that is why I try to maintain my friendships and have a dog. Of course we all want connections and relationships what a silly question. He was offended. I have noticed they are easy to offend. It isn't like I was saying hate all men blah blah. I am not trying to stop them from dating. Sure go ahead and get married for the third time I don't care.

[–]TheFinalGirl_2121 points 5 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

It’s a toss-up. When I used to tell men I was seeing someone, they would back off. Now that I’ve given up and make it clear that I am done dating and will be alone forever, they see it as an opportunity. It’s odd. A guy friend from childhood reached out to me the other day and said he expected to hear “so exciting news” as the last time we spoke I was with someone. I let out a visceral,”Ew. No!” Like, the idea of dating and being with a man kind of makes me feel nauseous at this point. But I could see his gears turning. The absence of a man always seems like a vacancy to be filled for them.

[–]lucidlotusFDS Newbie 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I get this too. Guy "friends" getting back in touch after a while will ask so are you seeing someone? Are you marred with kids yet? These are the married guys assuming because they settled down everyone must want to. And then they say things like "It's just so surprising no one has locked you down yet," "I can't believe you're still single," as if there must be something wrong with me, although they know there's not. Not helpful.

[–]i2aminspired 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly fuck those people who give you backhanded compliments. Like those nosy older women who never went anywhere in life and therefore wanna sabotage any younger women with ambition. They’ll say stuff like oh, you’ll find him eventually, oh it’s never too late for love, oh I’ll hook you up with my son. Like fuck off obviously you’re not doing this out of the kindness of your heart, you’re doing this out of pity and because society has told you a woman can’t be successful unless she’s tied down to a man. A man who she’ll be stuck for cleaning and cooking and child rearing until the day she dies, and these days don’t even think of getting compensation for your hard work otherwise you’re a ratchet Golddigger. Fuck all these backhanded compliments, they ain’t slick. They are jealous and it shows.

My mother's boss asked her last year if I was planning on getting married now that I wrapped up my PhD - That's such a weird question to begin with. She told him no, I don't want to get married (last thing I need is some nv scrote taking off with half of my stuff lol also marriage is patriarchal af).

He apparently first visibly bluescreened and then got a sadz about how "tragic" it is to be "forever alone"

🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

[–]miasmicivyphsycFDS Newbie 59 points60 points61 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He’s just sad that he can’t pray on another honorable woman. These people see women As a numbers game so one less dependent woman equals one less opportunity.

[–]akashyaboaFDS Newbie 114 points115 points116 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I really did not get there alone, but I was so traumatized by being afraid of being"caught with a man" as a Muslim woman, that I'm just happier alone. Now that I'm nearing my 30's and my parents and family are starting to get worried I don't have a husband anywhere in sight, I'm happy to throw their own rules in their faces. And just on my level, I assimilate men with the high level of stress and dear for my life (literally, since I was always threatened with death if anything), so I just like to be alone now with no one around, no man, no family. I'm the happiest alone in the nature.

I'm not saying I will actively reject everyone, but if they stress me even a little, it's a no.

[–]bagthebossup16 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I lived in a majority Muslim country for a bit as I was studying a language. Two people in my program (a man and a woman) started dating when we were there, and one night they were caught kissing in an alleyway and the man who caught them freaked the fuck out. He said he was calling the police, etc. We laughed about it, but in hindsight, it was scary -- they ran away and a few men chased them for a couple blocks until they were able to hide and the men couldn't find them. I can't imagine how much worse it was for Muslim women.

[–]sitpalsap 5 years ago [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

I'm still in mid 20 but I realize I've already wasted so many years chasing the idea that finding love is the ultimate goal and I'll be a failure if I dont get married to my soulmate. I've switched so many desicions, plans and ideas just because deep down I was thinking that "maybe this will be where I'll finally meet the one", weather that was going to some parties, going on countless OLD dates or even moving to a different country as I've always found the men in my homecountry boring. And for what?? I was still single most of the time due to my high standards and I am still single now, realizing that at the times when I am not involved with some guy, I'm way more productive, motivated, happier and calmer in general in my life, whilst I listen to my girlfriends moan about their guys on a daily basis. Thinking, what could I have done and achived with all this time I wasted on chasing my romantic ideals? But it is what it is now.

Hearing my mum turning into even a bigger pick me these months, hearing all of the stories you girls share or reading that post where it said that women are 6x more likely than men to be left and divorced if they got cancer just make me boil inside and totally breaks my heart.

It was all a lie. It's my resolution for this year to break this pattern and set myselt free. I know I am finaly on the right track ;) wish me luck ladies!

I don't know if you're already doing this, but set goals for yourself. Realistic, achievable goals, not those day dreams like "I want to travel the world!" but something like "In 2022, I'm going to Paris" and then start planning towards your goal. Budget, save, plan an itinerary, plan your PTO - stuff like that. It doesn't have to be travel related, but that was an easy example.

For me personally, my goal this year was to buy a home. When I have a goal in mind, I focus a lot of my mental energy on working towards that goal, and I have very little time to think about dumb shit like men and romance. And once you reach it, you can look back at that achievement and be proud of yourself. This will motivate you to set another goal and move towards that. This way, you never stop moving forward - man or no man. If you happen to find someone and he fits in YOUR life, fine. But if not, you will have lived a full and happy life with all these goals that you have achieved and no one can tell you that you wasted your life cause you lived it exactly the way you wanted to.

I'm almost 40 and have had several long term relationships. Just like this woman, I can say with 100% certainty that I am happiest when I'm single. I'm content and confident in myself. However, I can't say this without thinking that anyone who would hear me say it would just write me off as having "sour grapes". It's so engrained in us to believe single women must be unhappy.

Marriage is not an accomplishment. It’s just not

[+]Cultural_Training249FDS Newbie -25 points-24 points-23 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Yes, it is. I wish women would not do that. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that you achieve successfully is an acomplishment. In ANY and all areas of our lives. I always take when anyone downplays anything that I do as jealous and mean and form of negging and distance myself from them.

[–]kortiz46FDS Newbie 43 points44 points45 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

But it’s not an achievement. Having and maintaining a successful relationship is. Having a cohesive and happy family is. Signing a piece of paper is something anyone can do with whoever is willing. I wish people would focus more on the substance of the thing instead of feeling like they’ve done all the work by deciding to get married

[–]DallasOMalleyFDS Newbie 25 points26 points27 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agree. I've been married and the actual acts of getting married, and being in a marriage, aren't impressive at all. In the West, at least, any woman with low standards can pull that off within a couple years. Getting married was one of the easiest things I've ever done.

Maintaining a happy, healthy marriage, however, IS an impressive achievement, but I rarely see that celebrated to the degree weddings are.

There’s a difference between being supportive of friends and defining marriage as an accomplishment. I think it’s great if/when my friends get married and are happy about it. However, when you think these things are goals/accomplishments it’s more likely you’ll see divorce or separation as a failure. Women who get brainwashed into thinking their lives are meaningless without marriage are hesitant to leave unhappy relationships because getting into that marriage was their “goal”. More women should be striving towards mental health and relationships that benefit them instead of thinking they accomplished something by legally binding themselves to someone

Lmao nobody is negging no matter how many times you write negging. Nobody is hating on being married or marital status. I’m hating on the concept that being married is something to strive for. Like another comment said, it’s just a circumstance. It doesn’t guarantee you have a happy and healthy relationship. It doesn’t guarantee you won’t get cheated on. It doesn’t guarantee you won’t be abused.

I’m starting to just not see the point in dating men with the goal being settling down/marriage. If I want kids later on in life and happen to be single, I’ll just adopt or get a sperm donor 🤷🏻‍♀️ that’s just one less child to clean up after lol

All great points and the biggest takeaway I got from that was she’s choosing to be single NOT BECAUSE of trauma or brokenness.

Even though I have experienced trauma, the choice for me to be single is not motivated due to that trauma or any type of fear. I know what relationship-avoidance bred from fear and unhealthy self-perception looks like. I lived through that in my young adulthood. This is not it.

This choice I make now is coming from a place rooted in my self-knowing. An honest assessment of what makes me feel whole and truly content, and a better person. I’m choosing to lean on me to be the main provider for my life experience. I choose what brings out my authenticity. And I no longer feel like that conscious autonomy is diffused or undermined by commitments I’m not 100 enthusiastic about.

Marriage, even flings, are not a necessity in my life and simply an option. I regard them now as a “choose an adventure” for a chapter and, when it has overextended its stay, turn the page. Trauma and that feeling of brokenness is in my past. Where I am now is the culmination of my past, my accomplishments, and contentment from acceptance.

It’s gotten to a great point where I can look back at these situations and appreciate the little details I picked up from some people. One man introduced me to a nice drink that I usually order from time to time, another man got me started on taking Vitamin D religiously, while another got me to appreciate video games as a way to de-stress. And while these didn’t end in the ideal way intended, i.e. a loving committed relationship, I still choose to appreciate the tiny positive things provided to me in passing as a little keepsake of the experience.

We will never be able to avoid pain and loss though. And I do dread the day when people I fiercely love now and in the future move on to a place where I can’t follow yet. Life keeps flowing after all. But I chose to be aware that I’m that one constant in my life. I have one mountain to scale, and some days there’re times I’m at the peak and other times, I slipped back. But this mountain is still completely mine. Each experience another notch for me to ascend higher.

Choosing to stay single is celebrating the life I have. I’m still sharing it with people, just not in the path that has been traditionally paved for a woman. We’ve always been paving our own path, but it hits different when you’re willing the direction it flows.

[–]TheFinalGirl_218 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

This is why I can’t fully align with rhetoric like this. She didn’t say anything bad or wrong. But my “choice” to be single has been motivated 100% by pain, trauma, and rejection. I know that’s not healthy, and that isn’t her problem. Nor is it the problem of any other women who genuinely feel that way. I’m still working out the kinks, so when I see some “Turn that frown upside down, girlfriend, dying childless and alone is what all the cool girls are doing! Woot!” bullshit, it triggers me a little. Because it’s kind of rubbing my failure in my face. Keyword: my failure not that it applies to women in general. I’m still learning how to be okay with never getting to be part of my own loving family unit*. And I think we should show a little bit of grace to women in a similar situation.

*I understand that family can be any group of people. But if everyone you know is coupled with families of their own to tend to, it’s challenging to apply this philosophy.

Personally, I've only recently arrived at a place where I connect with this message. Reading the content on FDS every morning has helped me get to that space, as it's a reminder that a bad relationship is worse than being single and even a good relationship can have its limitations. I still want a family unit (love your definition and qualification re. friends being coupled - that's my situation right now), but personally, listening to this sort of content alongside that desire has helped me realise why I might be craving that life.

Sending you lots of good vibes x

I’ve said that so many times, myself: “I’m SO much happier when single!!”

I’ve always been happy when I’m single. It’s only when I’m in a relationship or seeking a relationship do I become unhappy, stressed out, and insecure. I’ve been single for the past six years as well as being celibate. I never would have been as successful or as driven as I was if I was in a relationship and had children.

A fully grown woman is articulating what makes her happy but you don't believe her, right?

Why do you think that is?

SPOT. THE. HECK. ON!!!! I lost count how many times I tell people I prefer not pursuing relationship and instead I want to spend all my years on self growth, and people immediately disregard what I just said with the stupid, "Oh you just don't meet the right man yet, you will change your mind then!" and treat me like a fucking child because I don't want to date and find a husband. Just because of that, and I am a 30 years old adult woman!

Apparently I live my life all these years, and I somehow still don't know what makes me happy. To throw insult to injury, some of the ones saying those bullshit are in their early 20s. Them be thinking they are more mature than me, hence can tell me how to live my life just because they are in relationships. What. The. Absolute. Fuck.

Desiring partnership is biological, not patriarchal. But I do agree with the video’s message overall. Also, I think it’s very easy to confidently declare lifelong singlehood when you grew up in a loving, supporting home where you were validated (I don’t know OP, but speaking generally). A lot of women who romanticize “happily ever after” come from abuse and dysfunction, and finding a partner is less about patriarchal pressure and more about,”Will somebody ever love me?” or “Can I create the family I never got to have?” I recognize this in a lot of relationships I see.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that factor addressed. It’s all fun and games to rebel against your normcore mom and dad and siblings to be the fun, childfree aunt. But if you’ve never experienced what it’s like to be part of a functional, stable family unit...having a string of unsuccessful dating relationships and finally being encouraged to “just be alone” can be devastating. Even pickmes know that men are shit, but being alone can be scary. Period, and I don’t blame them for wanting to avoid it. I still shudder to think about that “1F” situation. I’m always going to encourage women to eliminate harmful, useless men (the standard) from their lives, but I’m never going to assume all or most women who prefer to have male companionship are simply slaves to patriarchy. That’s reductive and a teensy bit internally misogynistic.

[–]jasmine-blossom 21 points22 points23 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Desiring sex, desiring community, and desiring emotional intimacy are biological, but none of these biological desires are required or even naturally take place in a monogamous, “one man, one woman” relationship.

Throughout history, humans have had all sorts of (romantic, familial, and friend) relationship arrangements, and the patriarchal myth that in order to feel fulfilled, a person must find and cohabitate with their “one true soulmate” is simply propaganda. If we’re going to romanticize anything, we should be romanticizing intimacy in all of its forms, not just in monogamous romantic relationships.

How many women would leave their abusive partners or never become abused in the first place if we fostered more relationship possibilities than the isolating, 2 partners arrangement? How many more single mothers would have support if they were surrounded by multigenerational women who were there to help them? How many women would forgo marriage altogether if there had a network of relationships to depend on, and examples of other women who thrived in alternative lives? Those women who romanticize “happily ever after” bc they have trauma would do a lot better in that environment as well, and would be less likely to be targeted by abusive men. That’s the feminist future I want to work towards.

[–]Watzoo 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That isolation is more of a white western phenomenon. Many other cultures and communities don’t see men as a soulmate guarantee in marriage, and those often show women maintaining much stronger, more enmeshed networks with women in their families and communities.

I found a study that shows white western women tend to be the most isolated (which I suspect is why that demographic tends to generate some of the most vocal support for more patriarchal policies in politics and religion - they’re more isolated with a man/men as their sole network, so keeping their limited connections alive will move them toward commonly held stances in their network). It’s also noteworthy that female isolation from female networks increases as their communities and the men in them (be it racial, political, religious) increase in status and power.

Now I’m going to look for that study. It’s been a minute.

[–]NartressFDS Newbie 34 points35 points36 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I went back and watched the video again to make sure and she didn't say anything along the lines of women who want male companionship are slaves to patriarchy. She only said that that isn't something we need to aspire to. As in, we have more choices than we may think. But I can see how you came to that conclusion.

[–]cmore_moneyFDS Newbie 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She said MARRIAGE is a part of patriarchial norms...not companionship. Marriage is literally based off of men owning women. You can still seek out companionship without wanting to be a part of the traditionally oppressive construct that is marriage.

[–]TheFinalGirl_21-2 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

If a woman thinks marriage is oppressive, then that woman should not participate in marriage. There are women who think penetrative sex with men is oppressive, that pregnancy and childbirth are oppressive, that beauty routines are oppressive so “marriage vs companionship vs relationship vs sex vs...” the word really doesn’t matter so much in the context of what I was saying.

We’re all influenced by the patriarchy, yes. But I’m not going to condescend to another woman who is choosing a different path than me and attribute it to patriarchal brainwashing. That takes away her agency.

If you want to stay home and bake pies and make babies, because you enjoy it, go for it.

If you want to be single and celibate for life, go for it.

If you want to do it up Golden Girls style, go for it (and invite me over sometimes).

I’m genuinely confused by the concept of telling other women that their choices (that you don’t agree with) are not their own. Seems suspiciously...patriarchal. Feminism is choice, and sometime those choices don’t appear to be good for us, but that’s what that particular woman may need at the time. Feminist gatekeeping is not fetch, in my humble opinion.

This is incredibly insightful and really hits home for me; I'm in tears.

When we were teens, a friend lightly poked fun that I wanted the "stereotypical" life of a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence and 2.5 kids. Even as a teen I thought, "Well yeah, because I don't have that now" whereas my friend did (to an extent).

And as an adult I can objectively acknowledge that being single can lead to a just as if not happier life than a marriage. However, it's hard not to mourn the fact that this is the one thing that you want that you can't create for yourself. It takes work to find solace that your life may not look like what you thought it would.

[–]TheFinalGirl_2110 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

hugs Thank you for sharing that.

I don’t care for the anti-picket fence rhetoric, personally. If you don’t want that or if you had that and it didn’t work out well, you really don’t have the right to discourage someone else. I liken it to someone who drops out of their freshman year in college because they found a good paying job trying to tell someone not to pursue their doctorate, because it’s expensive and a lot of work. And so what? Just because you didn’t want to try doesn’t mean it’s bad.

I talk trash about men on here, and it’s definitely warranted, but I do know of a small minority of women who are in happy relationships where they’re being treated well. That doesn’t give me hope in the least, but I can acknowledge that there is an alternative to my choice of celibacy for life.

[–]PollyAnnaSunshine 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Your first paragraph is what "finding someone" was always about for me. And also about feeling included in a community which is harder as a single person.

I grew up feeling abandoned by both my parents and not accepted by some of the people in my extended family.

My parents were both "present" physically but I have a lot of resentment about my dad's abusive behavior and long periods of abandoning us financially and emotionally and allowing his girlfriends to abuse and alienate us in our own home. My mom's response to the trauma of divorcing him and dealing with 20 years post-divorce of abusive or dysfunctional bullshit was to withdraw, hide, and just be very, very depressed.

So I always dreamed about having my own family to basically get a re-do at having a nice, comfortable, loving family. I'm sure a part of it was also the internalized misogyny and wanting the "status" of being a married woman to fit in with my peers who are married. (But the bachelorette party "Miss to Mrs." stuff was always SO cringey to me even before FDS.)

In that sense, I'm definitely "happier single" but I feel like that happier-singleness is coming from a bit of an unhealthy place. I'm happier single because I don't have to fear dealing with abandonment, lies, and other loser LV behavior that I've seen from many men starting with my own dad at times. I can spend my own money and control the who-what-when-where-why of my life which as a kid I could not and had to put up with abuse from people who were guests in our home and from a parent. The only way I could be truly content and trusting in a relationship would be with a super HV male with basically unshakeable integrity and loyalty to our family. Unlike some of my friends who have been "successful" in getting married, half measures and marrying someone who is kinda good enough isn't going to work.

That said I know that many women really are happier single and it's not due to avoidance. It's really encouraging to see what women are able to achieve when not limited by expectations and stereotypes. FDS-ers inspire me every day to level up and do better.

I think there are quite a few of us here who have these similar experiences. Another FDS user posted about the Crappy Childhood Fairy on Youtube and IMO that channel has some great thoughts on the importance of

  1. not settling for LV/inappropriate partners and having written boundaries
  2. overcoming fears of abandonment and
  3. not isolating out of fear which can feel safer, but can also prevent full healing because we miss out on the inclusion and social needs that all people have.

So far it seems pretty aligned with FDS. We talk a lot about the first one here and the other 2 are discussed often on FLS. Sorry if this is a bit off topic. The OP was very accurate, I think what you said was accurate as well and wanted to add on in case this could help someone!

A lot of women who romanticize “happily ever after” come from abuse and dysfunction, and finding a partner is less about patriarchal pressure and more about,”Will somebody ever love me?” or “Can I create the family I never got to have?” I recognize this in a lot of relationships I see.

You're right. I grew up in a lonely, broken home, and when I'm in a severe depressive episode, I escape into my fantasies where I have a family and a romantic partner who loves me. Sometimes I don't know if I genuinely like being alone or if I merely tolerate being alone because I'm afraid to connect to people and I have a hard time trusting men.

The cynic and romantic within me are always fighting each other, with the former usually winning because I don't have much hope in finding someone I can trust enough and feel safe with (and that's not even counting compatibility, attraction, etc.).

It also hurts because I'm not a high-powered career woman with a beautiful home. I was born into a poor immigrant family. I admire women who are hardworking trailblazers, but when you're poor and lonely, it can be hard to cultivate confidence. I suspect a lot of women romanticize the big family life and 'happily ever afters' because the reality of working to live and living to work, and coming back to an empty apartment with no one to show you love is bleak.

Then again, I'll read horror stories about women in relationships with men, and I'm grateful to be alone again. Being single is better than being with an abusive, unloving, or useless man.

Sorry for the rambling response. I suppose where I'm going with this is that I agree with your comment, and how it's not always due to patriarchal brainwashing why some women romanticize marriage/having a family.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this as well. I think some women fear being vulnerable and acknowledging the desire for love and companionship, but we're only human. Of course, it's wrong when men and the patriarchy exploit that fear, shaming women when they're single or pressuring women into relationships with terrible or mediocre men, but it doesn't mean it's wrong for women to want a romantic connection or a family in the first place.

I would agree. I see what you’re saying and think it’s 100% on point. We shouldn’t shame ourselves for wanting supportive nurturing partners.

Our societal valuation of a woman based on whether she’s attached to a man is the real problem. Not us, not our hearts, not our desire to bond or find a consistent sexual partner who is faithful.

It’s probably more nuance than is going to transmit well across a broad audience though. 🤷🏼‍♀️

[–]TheFinalGirl_214 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

“We shouldn’t shame ourselves for wanting supportive, nurturing partners.”

That is literally all I’m saying. Nor should we shame other women for wanting it. It isn’t a sign of weakness or low self-esteem or anything like that, either. If someone wants food and it’s past dinner time, we don’t call them “desperate”.

"you were not put on this planet to find someone" well said, I really like this. Thanks in large part to FDS, I realized almost a year ago I don't want to be married, don't want kids, don't even want a bf. One of the best things that ever happened to me.

Maybe I'll be a single parent by choice, adopting adopt a school aged kid when I'm closer to 40 and if I can figure out the logistics of homeschooling + working full time, but who knows. It just feels good to know the option is there. Since I realized I don't want marriage and I have so much time to decide about adoption, I feel free. My life doesn't depend on the random chance of ~meeting someone~ anymore, and sometimes I'm shocked/saddened at how low my self esteem was and how much self worth I placed on male validation that I was planning my life on that random chance. I'd give anything to see how crazy and dangerous that was before, but better late than never I suppose.

Grateful for the FDS aligned friends in my life and for this sub as a daily reminder of good ways conduct my life.
