There is currently an adorable video of a dog smiling at the top of a popular sub. I'll avoid linking it or giving hints at to which sub, but take a look at popular and you might catch it.

Unfortunately, said dog is a pitbull, which brings out the anti-pitbull crowd to give their usual "all pits are dangerous!" rant while simultaneously complaining that Reddit as a whole glorifies pitbulls.

Now, you may feel however you feel about specific dog breeds. I do have a soft spot for pits and Rottweilers, but that's not the main point here.

A quick search says that pit bulls are responsible for 66 percent of dog-related fatalities. A lot of people point to that statistic and feel justified in staying away from or even "euthanizing" all pit bulls and mutts with pit blood in them. Insurance companies use stats like this to spike homeowner's insurance rates or even refuse to cover your home should you have a dog of a designated breed.

Now consider the "not all men" rhetoric that's also common on Reddit. We apparently have no right to be suspicious of men, because not all of them are violent. And they'll prove that with threats and harassment!

Let's look at violent crime stats by sex.

Males constituted 98.9% of those arrested for forcible rape[52]

Males constituted 87.9% of those arrested for robbery[52]

Males constituted 85.0% of those arrested for burglary[52]

Males constituted 83.0% of those arrested for arson.[52]

Males constituted 81.7% of those arrested for vandalism.[52]

Males constituted 81.5% of those arrested for motor-vehicle theft.[52]

Males constituted 79.7% of those arrested for offenses against family and children.[52]

Males constituted 77.8% of those arrested for aggravated assault[52]

These stats are from 2011, but I doubt the balance has shifted that much in 10 years.

Further up in the page there are a few lines that men are more likely to be victims in certain crimes, but which sex is more likely to be the perpetrator?

Men as a whole are statistically more likely to be perpetrators of violent acts than pitbulls, but we're meant to be suspicious of dogs instead of humans.

Other fun facts: The odds are being attacked by a shark are 1 in 11.5 million. Odds of dying from that attack are substantially lower.

Odds of being attacked by bears are around 1 in 2.1 million.

Less than half of car accidents are fatal, yet road safety laws exist relatively unchallenged.

Now, does this mean our safety concerns are aimed at the wrong targets? Or that our increased caution is keeping us safe? Either way, there's a strong case to be made for women applying some of that same caution to our dating lives.

Why are we more willing to defend ourselves from animals and inanimate objects than other humans?
