Vanguard, I use a Target Date Retirement Fund. Set it and forget it, they automatically adjust the balance between stocks and bonds as I near retirement age best decision I ever made.

Honestly it might be worth it to seek the guidance of a bonafide financial advisor to figure out the best investments for you. There's a lot of hype and misinformation from stockbros who had a lone lucky break and a good chunk of change to play with, that are just posting for clout. Tread carefully here

I don't know dip about finances in the US but I've been watching a channel on Youtube called the "Financial Diet" and so far she's given me a lot to think about.

As for my advice, I've often read the following advice from personal finance bloggers: if you come into a decent amount of money suddenly, don't be afraid to let it sit in a savings account for a few months while you think about it. Don't feel rushed into a decision because you may be 'missing an
opportunity". The money will still be there in a few months and any investment that would potentially give you significant returns in that short amount of time is inherently risky.
If it's a large amount, make sure it's split up into several accounts to ensure it's protected by any government-backed bank failure insurance (as u/vaguelinen suggested).

I recommend investing in a broad-based index fund that tracks the market, like VTSAX or your country's equivalent. A great book on this for beginners is "The Simple Path to Wealth" by JL Collins. He also has a blog under the same name if you google it.

I read a few books to get me started. Investing for Dummies was extremely helpful. I started out with ETFs. They are like mutual funds but you can buy and sell shares like stocks. Then I would do research on different markets and pick a few companies that seemed really innovative and narrow it down from there.

For the love of Pete stay away from cryptocurrency. It’s an extremely volatile market and not trustworthy.

Also, use Robinhood. Totally commission free and if you get a checking or savings account with them it’s now earning .5% APY.

Don’t invest too much in any one sector. Diversify as much as you can. Specialize in a few different areas.

I’m just saying what has worked for me. I don’t know what your financial goals are, if you are going more for growth or dividends or just stability or what, but the best thing is to learn for yourself so you can make good, informed decisions. Never stop learning as some things change quickly.

I invest in a low-cost global index tracker. It aims to have broadly the same returns as the global stock market. This means that it's really well-diversified, but simple, and you can just stick the money in and leave it over the long term. Please note, stocks are a higher risk investment and therefore should only be used if you're investing for a long time, e.g. at least 5 years.

Sub-wise, there's UK Personal Finance which is great, but my fave for this sort of thing is FIREUK. I found out about the Financial Independence, Retire Early movement from FDS; they generally favour simple strategies for long-term investing.

Below is about investing in the stock market. Whether or not you should go this route over other investment vehicles is a discussion on its own and that should be done via a financial advisor. For the US at least, different investment vehicles have different tax implications, and they can make a huge difference in your after-tax profits from investing.

In short:

Don't invest money you're not ok to lose
ETF's/index funds/mutual funds are considered significantly safer than single stocks
"FAANG" stocks (facebook, amazon, apple, netflix, microsoft, google) are considered the next step down as safe investments (tho I'd argue facebook isn't safe, but that's entirely my personal opinion)
penny stocks are a really bad idea 99.9999% of the time

20-30 stocks should be in your stock portfolio. If this is unachievable, go the ETF's/index funds/mutual funds route.
Crypto/NFT's are basically gambling at this point and thanks to ethical and environmental concerns, I refuse to invest in them. That said, some ppl have made bank in them
Chinese companies are only successful if they bend to the will of the government. I have ethical concerns with all Chinese companies due to this. It's also important to note that the gov can tank a stock thanks to this (e.g. Tencent, Alibaba).
I personally only put ~5% of my portfolio in "sheer gambles, I do not give a shit," and the rest of my investments I break up by risk.
Assume all investments are to be held over a 5 year period. Throw money into the market, and do not touch it until that period elapses.
