First - I love when guys ask me meaningful questions to try to get to know me better.

But what I notice happening more is, guys ask random questions and slowly get more and more personal with the whole “would you rather” shtick, to the point where it becomes obvious they’re conducting a kind of twisted personality test, while trying to fool you into thinking that the questions are still sooo random like they were in the beginning.

They begin with stuff like “would you go for the mountains or the beach?”

And then when you’ve answered that, they’re like “Ok tacos or pizza?” Tacos...

But instead of taking the “tacos” answer as an intro to ask you out for, you know, tacos, it is instead time for them to interrogate you with something much more serious. Something along the lines of -

“Would you rather date a man who is good looking, smart, or has a sense of humor? You can only choose ONE!”

What kind of question is this? It’s encouraging a scarcity mindset and subtly teaching you to expect that a guy will only offer one of these traits, so you’d better be happy with what you get. But I’d rather be single than be with a guy who only has one of those traits. I mean, if I pick Mr good looking, he could be abusive. And I’m sure the other two could look like trolls, but I’d have to be fine with it, since I chose them, right??

It’s also way to gauge how shallow you are. Or how honest and naive you are. Or what traits they can get away with not showing you because, hey, you said you didn’t care if I was smart!

Or they ask you, “would you still shave if you were alone on a deserted island?” This one in particular is a way to gauge how soon you’ll stop shaving your legs if y’all were to start dating.

They really think they’re so smart with these “personality quizzes.” The only way to play the game is .... not to play.
