Just sayin, cheap rings will break down faster, scratch like hell. I would only accept a Walmart ring as a placeholder ring for another better ring on its way.
Don't believe me that rings will wear down? I bought two cheap silver rings (50$ each) for myself, and after two years, the ring's palm side is very thin and I'll have to get rid of them soon.
Cheap metals will also discolor your skin in contact with the ring too.

I'd say "yes" to a Walmart ring if he proposed abroad and this was a placeholder ring that he brought because he didn't want to risk traveling with the actual ring. I know a HVM who did that when he proposed to his now wife on vacation.
If there's no reason to not propose with the real thing, he should be proposing with the real thing.

But what hvm would not have diligently planned his proposal. I dont trust "spontaneous" proposals. Especially on vacation. Vacations are relaxing and you're seeing your so in a very carefree state so what, he saw her in her bikini , sipping on mimosas and thought to marry her?

You misread my comment.
To clarify further: a HVM I know proposed to his now wife at the Trevi Fountain in Italy with a cheap ring because he was uncomfortable traveling with the actual engagement ring he had purchased for her. The proposal was very much planned. He gave her the actual ring when they returned to the US. It wasn't some drunken spontaneous proposal at a cheap beach resort.

I feel like an FDS rule should be to never accept an engagement ring worth less than a month’s salary. If you’re in the states, this means no ring less than 1k because even at minimum wage, he can afford a 1k ring.

That’s a very good rule...but to be honest, something I’ve always wondered about was how do you estimate how much the ring costs or if it’s even a real diamond at the time of him “popping the question”? Do you say “Yes/ I will think about it” and then go have the ring assessed at a jeweler?

My ex that I broke up with this January was going to propose right before Christmas and my parents said he had gotten a nice $8K ring...but I was still hesitant that he was the one, so I had a conversation with him (without telling him that I knew about the proposal he was planning), that I didn’t feel we were in a very good place to move to the next steps of a relationship. It was a very tactful conversation but his LV ass got all butthurt and so I broke up with him a week later.
He tried to shove it in my face that he was going to propose and showed me the ring and it was “just ok” ...(I think he was trying to get me to reconsider breaking up with him? Lol) He left the paperwork in the bag from the jewelry store and I saw that he got it on sale for $3K (and it was never an $8K ring). A few weeks later I saw him trying to sell it on Facebook for $2.5K, so I knew it wasn’t worth nearly as much as he told my parents the ring was worth (just trying to impress them my guess). He was LV and I’m glad he’s now my ex.

Yes. Years ago, I had a close friend whose boyfriend was looking to propose. He asked me for input on the ring. I knew his budget wasn’t substantial, so I sent him several different very affordable options that featured her birth stone with diamond accents. Beautiful rings that I knew she would admire and appreciate.
Apparently that was too much effort. He decided to just go to Walmart and ask for the “cheapest” ring with a diamond as the center stone. No thought put into it whatsoever. Just “What’s the least expensive option? I’ll take it.” 🤢

Couples should have shared financial priorities, I would have been horrified if my now-husband spent that kind of money on a ring. I worked in a lab and wouldn't have been comfortable wearing something that expensive (even keeping it on a necklace to avoid tearing my gloves). That money would be much better towards a down payment on a house, a retirement account, or my student loans (he had none, lucky duck).
Of course I'd also be horrified with a ring from Walmart. I agree that screams broke loser who doesn't actually care. If he was of limited means but did care he'd save up or find something used but still good quality.

It’s not even the ring that matters or the amount per se it’s just culturally we can all accept that this screams zero to low effort, last minute thought and little importance.
Most people would just continue saving for longer or do anything else so that even the thought of low effort could never be associated with the ring you want to present to your future spouse.
It’s rather insulting if you think about it because if you just save $1 a day for a whole year you could purchase a ring that costs $365.
Even if you saved $0.50 a a day for one year you could get a pretty decent ring for $182.50 and it would look like the real thing and show lots of effort but just not a lot of money.
Maybe my standards are too high for not wanting a $48 engagement ring from an adult male 🤷♀️

I personally think placeholder rings are adorable. If you're young and broke, or out of the country, or it's a spur of the moment decision, then yes please propose with a walmart ring, or a pretty pink ribbon, or even a freaking ring pop. That's the cutest shit ever.
IF AND ONLY IF there is an actual ring coming.
