Nope, one of the unwritten "rules" of workplaces is that it's pretty much considered to be women's (unpaid) job to acknowledge birthdays/holidays/etc. Men (almost) never do it and aren't expected to.

If we don't participate we're considered uncooperative and "not a team player" but we get no recognition for doing it. It's just one of those unspoken expectations.

I get it. At my firm, the departments take turns in the winter at providing fun activities and snacks for the whole office. There’s trivia, quizzes with prizes, taco bars, special drinks, the finance team ran around making everyone ice cream sundaes...

Guess which dept doesn’t do anything every year?

The only male dominated department. I don’t think they’ve ever done ANY appreciation or anything for the rest of the company, even though they’re invited to participate in the activities each time. It’s kind of shitty.

Happy birthday to you! I'm working with men only in my team and though I feel respected and would even consider them friends I would never go the extra mile and make them gifts or anything. I feel like it would only put me in a submissive role of a people-pleaser and I don't wanna contribute to such an image.

No shade. I did things like that in the past, it did actually show the effect I wished it had like spreading joy or team building. It just made me the chosen one for 'stupid girly tasks' at the same time. Like buying cards because apparently I like so much to care about such things.

I’ve worked on all male teams, and realized long ago not to expect any returned thoughtfulness on their parts (unless it was business strategy or they were trying to sex me up). Happy Birthday and don’t let them see you upset. Tell them you’re going to Hooters at lunch for free birthday wings, but they’re not invited 🤣

It's not like they don't know where to buy cards or cookies. Could've even asked your friends what your fav snack is and plunked it out of the vending machine and made a god damn card out of printer paper and left those on your desk last minute. Why are men so unimaginative?

Can you bring it up? Like in a joking way? Like "Damn, I got yall stuff for your birthday and this is all I get! I'll remember it for the next time!"

Full disclosure: I work for myself now, so not sure if this is the best strategy or not. But this is the angle I've taken when I worked with LVM in the past. Keep in mind LVM LOVE and take joy in any opportunity they have to deflate a woman, especially a high value woman. They are used to being ignored by women so when they get to "give it back to women" (because they think women oppress them by giving them boners) they take real pleasure in it.

If it were me I would probably call it out in a laughing, smiley way, but that kinda fits my personality- if that would be weird for you I wouldnt want to get you in trouble. But I would wanna call it out, and do it in a kind of "heehee, just teasing ya!" way that men so often weaponize against women, so I like to do it right back to them.

But that sucks. Just dont let it hurt you- as much as it's hurtful, just take this as a blessing from the universe so you wont be wasting any more time or money on these clowns. At least you know now. What a bunch of selfish losers.

Okay, as much as I hate to say this, maybe they weren’t really your friends. I think that it’s a little biased that everyone here is saying the reason that they forgot your birthday is because they’re men. If they really had a bond with you, they would’ve gotten you something small and wished you happy birthday at least. I that they’re just crappy people and that you shouldn’t expend anymore energy into them.
