I was really scarred of this moment. The relationship with my bf and me was progressing and getting more serious. I noticed he was very kind and empathetic in the bedroom which made me assume that he is at least not regularly consuming porn. However, my stance on this is very clear that I will not tolerate any porn use in our relationship, not even occasionally. I was scared that this was gonna be a breaking point in our relationship. But since this issue is really important to me, I decided to talk about it.

Against the FDS advice, I decided to be upfront about it. I hate lying and acting like I was ok with porn to see if he catches the bait did not resonate with me. Since we have very open communication and he has proven himself to be trustworthy, I was direct about the issue.

We have talked about feminist issues before and he was always kind, listening and compassionate. He accepted that I know more about these topics than I do and is positive about learning about these issues from me. So I told him that I have a very strong opinion / strong attitude against porn and I would like to explain him the reasons for it. During this talk he admitted that he had occasionally consumed porn which I perceived with mixed feelings. On one side, he consumed porn. On the other side, he chose to be honest about it even after knowing my stance on this. I sent him several documentaries on the negative sides of porn. One was posted on FDS a few weeks ago and showed the effects of porn on sexuality, how men perceive women and romantic relationships. Another one where former porn actresses speak out against the industry and its consumers.

He was very open and curious to learn about this topic. After he watched the first documentary, he told me has thought about this topic and he realized that porn had a negative impact on him. He reflected on porn use for a couple of days. He also brought up the topic himself which showed me that he was really thinking about it without me pushing towards it. I finally asked him if he thinks he could live without it. He told me he was thinking the same these days and the answer is yes. I told him that I am very relieved and that I am open to talk more. If he should relapse to watching porn and is open about it to me, I will give him another chance but should he ever lie to me about it, it's over for me. I know it's still possible that he is very good at hiding shady things but since he has been treating me very well since we know each other, I decided that my trust in him is justified.

The reason why I accepted his occasional porn consumption in the beginning was the fact that it was infrequent, he didn't know better, he reflected upon it and decided to change it. I was not fully committed to being porn free when we started dating and had one or two relapses which made me feel remorseful afterwards. It would feel like a double standard to dump him for the same LV behavior I did when he is committed to changing it. I feel like he is catching up but we are on the same path. Regardless, I will stay alert and continue vetting him.

I might not have done everything strictly according to FDS standards but it felt really wild and empowering to start this talk, knowing that I am gonna dump him if he insists on how normal it is to watch porn. I have been socialized to believe that all men watch porn and this is healthy and normal. I have seen porn and it is not healthy nor normal. It feels great to break free from this way of thinking and relieving to see that there are in fact men who are compassionate towards women exploited by the sex industry, women in general and their partners. Thanks FDS!

How did you bring up the talk about porn in a relationship? How did it go?
