Why is “What do you do for work” the first question guys immediately ask?

I ask the same thing. Its really the kind of question you ask someone you don't know. I went to my boyfriend's christmas part At his work and everyone asked the same thing when they met me.

I always ask that question almost immediately because it can tell you so much about someone's personality, education, ambition, passion, level of intelligence, and also to avoid red flag careers like law enforcement or traveling sales.

It's such a small question that gives far more insight than other bits of small talk.

Imo it's a 50/50 split between a normal get to know you question and a way to figure out which women are "independent" to avoid feeling obligated to provide any actual value. Jokes on them though, I make a good deal more money than most of the guys I date and I still expect them to buy me dinner.

No, just no... The men who have asked me this have either been in mediocre jobs where they don't make enough and hobosexuals looking for someone to split the rent with.

I stopped answering this question after I learned my lesson. This screams LVM. I don't even ask it cause I've heard guys complain thinking the woman only wants to know how much money they make so I definitely don't entertain it as a woman.

This is a very normal question for adults to ask strangers. Just avoid talking about where you exactly work and when (to avoid potential stalkers) or how much money you make (because obvious taboo in most countries).
