This is a topic I've wanted to talk about for a little while now. I came across a comment on Menslib just recently. The comment was made in a thread under a post about men and women having the same problems as each other and not being able to coexist due to polarization. This comment was made in response. Quote:
I don’t know the book you read, the books i have read all focus on men (patriarchy) as being the problem for ourselves. After dozens of books about masculinity, feminism, racism my (over simplified) conclusion is white men pretty much created the Western World (and the colonized world) and we made that world for us. We do not experience the world the same way at all as non-white, non-cis, non- hetro people.
When I reflect on my life I see the world I walk in as made by other men like me for men like me. Seeing the world in this perspective means the world for those people not white and male is not equal. My problems may look like the problems of white women, black men, brown women, etc. They are not. To put it (too) simply, white women have the layer of gender on top of the problems white men have, black men have the layer of being black, black women have both gender and being black…..in a world that has been principally made for white men by white men. White men don’t have the problems of being a woman nor black, nor Middle Eastern, nor Mexican….Our problems are not the same.
If you are solely speaking about capitalism, then yes. Poverty is the same for everyone poor. Sadly, being poor is not that simple because being poor and black is different than being poor and white. Being poor and male is different than being poor and female. Being poor and American is not the same as poor and Costa Rican.
I do empathize with you, just not in the way you are trying to connect. In you I see me, trying to figure it all out. I see someone reading and evaluating the world and seeing a lot of discomfort. It’s normal to try to want to find something common and to create solidarity. It just can’t come by devaluing other people’s experiences.
Now I want to preface this by saying that I don't think that he is entirely wrong here. I do think that there are differences in the issues that exist with white men and non-white men. However, my issue is that this person seems to be very firm in their knowledge on men's issues. The truth is that it's a bit more complicated than that and trying to simply it as "I'm white so I have it easier and shouldn't complain" is missing something. I doesn't acknowledge the fact that both white men and non-white men can go through similar experiences. I believe it was Dr. T. Hasan Johnson who stated that while white boys are treated like threats at around 13yo, non-white boys are treated this way as early as 8yo. Same issue, different potency. This goes for the prison sentences; paternity fraud, police brutality, sentencing, etc. They happen to all demographics of men. The big difference is the history. White men in the 60s era were only being murdered by affiliation with black folk (Mississippi Burning), not for solely being white. The Mexicans, Native and Asian men didn't have it much better either. Some of them were lynched as well. This doesn't even mention the Jim Crow laws and the distribution of crack to the ghettos orchestrated by the F.B.I. The list goes on.
With all this being said, as a black man, I do not appreciate it when feminists treat my experiences and a white man's experiences as if we are completely different animals. We can have a different history in a lineage but live similar lives. There are plenty of white men right now who I know for a fact have it worse than me. I've seen some traumatizing stories on this sub. I could never relate to those stories. So to sit here as a white man and confidently say: "I just can’t come by devaluing other people’s experiences" is baffling to me. You don't know all their experiences. I understand that we shouldn't get lost in the classism sauce and ignore identity but this seems like an overcorrection.
This comment from above reads as a white male feminist trying his hardest to not be ignorant will still doing so. I see other feminists do this as well. In this case, you'll see women (more specifically white women) very openly claim "I'd care more about these men's rights activists if they spoke more about black and brown men." They aren't even hiding it anymore. The DNC in their dumb ass campaign even openly admitted that they consistently send the message to young white men that "they suck." I've seen this stuff so much that the whole "speaking up for non-white men" seems like a performance to me. To them (and to the person in the above comment) it seems that I'm black before I'm male when I'm both at the same time. I just want to ask them: "Do you really care about me as a black man or is this another jab at the white man?" I've even seen black women starting to notice this when it comes to white women. Here's a quote I saw on twitter: "Guys thinking that adding 'white' in front of women makes their comments suddenly...okay. It's still misogyny." I'm not seeing any black men so far doing this for white men so I guess I'll do it here.
To the white men, don't ever let anyone (feminist or anti-feminist) make you feel bad for being a white man. I as a black man recognize what deliberate isolation feels like and I think I'd be a hypocritical fool to repeat the pattern. To the feminists who are reading this who tend to openly mock and shame white men for their identity, those are my brothers too. I know I can't speak for every black man, but you don't impress me. You take pride in the work of Fred Hampton but aren't willing to put in the work he did to unify ALL RACES. That's not feminism, that's favoritism. Guess which group of people had that? I'll give you a hint. It rhymes with Yahtzee. If you're going to call yourself an intersectional feminist as well as stating that feminism "fights for everyone," then act like it.
I think we need to start applying this mentality to white men as well. To be honest, I don't think it will happen any time soon. Hopefully, I'm wrong.
