Yeah working for an epcm and it sucks when you figure out how they bill people out at. Pay you $40 an hour but bill you out at least $100+. That's even after this downturn. I remember when I was told my old company on this project just flat billed every head at $150 an hour . A few they lost a bit on I'd they were senior engineers but this had a lot of copy scope so many junior/intermediate designer/drafters making 25-50 an hour

Yeah this bullshit, even 10 years ago, is what made me start my own IT business. I only hire the best candidates and every single time so far, it's a white guy.
Every time I post a job I get so many good resumes I have to ask interview questions like:
"Here is a $20 dollar bill. Explain to me why this has any value to anyone. You have 10 minutes." Just to narrow down the best hire.
Get a lot of info about a person when they answer that one.

It is a brain job not running a cash register. You need to problem solve. You need to know things that they don't teach you in school and you need to be constantly learning. Just because you have a degree 10 years ago doesn't mean shit in this line of work.
You ask questions like this to see how people THINK. To see how much they value learning new things.
A famous example is google used to ask people how many windows are in New York city. It judges how you think it's not about the answer.
It's like in sales asking someone to sell you this pen.
I'm glad you think you know more about this than I do having done hundreds of these interviews now.
Anyone with your mindset would be gone.

Exactly. The best answers I get are not someone refusing to answer or quoting an economics textbook. It's more about how you see the gears start to whirl as they think about it.
Usually it comes down 3 ways.
1) Someone that refuses to answer and tries to change the subject. If this was a test this answer would be worth zero points.
2) Someone gives an answer based on something they half remember from a business class. Or maybe being able to quote a textbook definition. I'd say this is 1-2 points.
3) Someone says hmm, and thinks about it, and tells me what they think the real reason our backed by nothing paper currency is worth anything to anyone else. Even if its completely weird, it still gives you a window into the mind behind the eyes, which is of course the entire point. 3-5 points.
The problem with the whole interview process is it's like a first date. Everyone is showing their fake selves with their rehearsed answers and not who they will be when they have shit that needs to get done and everything is going wrong that day.

Money when it comes down to it relies heavily on trust right now. We don't have enough gold to back it up. On gold, I was watching star trek and a ferengi, Quark, mentioned that it's worthless.
Ever since they've invented the matter replicator, gold can be easily replicated. So currency needs to be hard if not impossible to replicate. Which entity controls it and can people trust it? Latinum is thought to be an extremely rare liquid that must be kept suspended in gold dust block.
A replicator can't replicate Latinum because the material is too complex. On that note, bitcoin while digitals can't be replicated. It's scarce also. There are only 21 mil bitcoins (the maximum supply) in the world. Bit coin is technically rarer than gold. We might hit a new supply of gold deposit somewhere on the planet. Hell, in the future, we'll discover more gold on other planets than we know what to do with them.

I think you're looking for people who are quick on their feet to be able to change direction and solve unexpected problems under pressure.
I know I probably would just freeze if asked something like this on the interview as I would never see it coming. My mind would be stuck in "solve algorithm mode" (am software engineer). But ask me that out of interview, and I could think of semi-intelligible answer.

This reminds me of an interview I had at a bank many years ago, I studied the company etc.... But when the time came they totally fucked me over when they asked me to draw a picture of the sun and what it means to me... FFS.
I understand they want to see how my brain works but Come on.. Not everyone is an extrovert with qwirky answers that will light up the room.

The brain teaser questions are pointless. Google figured it out as well and stopped asking them a long time ago.
They don't show how people think. They show how glib someone is and if they've rehearsed this type of qn.
Asking someone 'how would you run this business', 'what are the top 5 things you think matter' etc show how someone thinks and how smart they are, in the context of the business.
You're getting a lot of false negatives and filtering them on your bias and think that the process is working. Its not.

A quick answer: 150 million windows. Because this number is relevant enough .
A flowery answer: about 9m people in NY so if you give em 10 windows each you'd have 90m windows.
A bullshit story answer: the number of windows is always changing and never the same and the question has little meaning because of this, in fact you've broken a window yourself just this week, the number of windows in NY is just one of those life mysteries that you'll never know but that's why it's so intriguing.
All answers with the presupposition that i don't need a 100% accurate number.
I'm really curious on the employers perspective because i'm working on my CV and gonna start finding work asap.

My answer would be that a 20 dollar bill has value because the majority of people in the world believes that it has value.
The full faith and credit of the United States Government is meaningless if the government has no creditability and no one has faith in them.
Nothing in this world has any inherent value, there is only the value that each individual believes it has, if I have an old silver coin that is very rare and I can convince the next guy that it’s worth 1000$ due to its rarity even though it’s only 1 oz of silver, that coin has a higher value than the base market price of 1 oz of silver due to his belief that it’s worth more.
Germany in the 20th century had an issue with their currency where it was costing a million units of their currency to buy a loaf of bread because the entire planet stopped believing it had value, there’s nothing to stop that from happening to anything else under certain circumstances. Value is determined by majority belief.
Would that be an acceptable answer to that question?

Maybe you should look into it a bit. It's kind of an interesting topic.
As for this question just as you can see from the replies here alone you always get some kind of a window into the person answering it.
I don't go into it looking for a specific answer. This is more for the people that check all the boxes, pass the proficiency questions, and seem social enough and able to communicate well enough.
This is like the tiebreaker when I have 10 people that on paper and so far seem like they would be okay but only 1 job at the moment. Who do I pick? 10's actually not realistic, I rarely do 10 interviews, but usually 2-3 people are a toss up at this point.

Yeah, with that context it makes sense, but the way I meant it was in general. I decided to educate myself on some of the US's monetary policies a while ago and was somewhat amused by how pedantic and strange a lot of it is.
If I were to go for a job that earned a ton, with that answer, the best thing I can think of is to build up some savings to experiment with, or to have an additional source of income aside whatever else I already have.

Reminds me of a time that I was second in position for a job after an interview for a 1st line Service Desk engineer. I got hired by them a few weeks later.
Turns out the woman they hired was absolutely useless and blatantly said how shes only in the job for a few months in order to get some money for her wedding.
The worst part is, when she started, she didn't even know how a second monitor worked or how to even turn it on. She said to the Senior that "her second monitor wasn't working and it was broken", he walked up to her and just turned it on via the button.

Talented people in IT will always find work when looking for it in the right places.
Focus on smaller sized companies that care about delivering quality products. Since these companies don't waste money on HR departments and useless employees filling up useless positions there's a lot more room for your professional growth as you're working with competent and smart people directly. It also means more money going into your pocket usually.
Big multinational corporations value your sex, ethnicity and sexual diversity more than your competency to get the job done right, just so they can fulfill their dumb diversity quota the bosses can present on the quarterly stakeholder meetings. I suggest you avoid those workplaces like plague.
Source: I also work at a very small private company as a Software developer contracted by the government to work on huge nation-wide systems. Constant raises, promotions, professional recognition and so much potential for growth. Most of my old-time friends (also IT) now work for multinational corporations and constantly complain how they can't move up the ladder, don't learn anything and work with ridiculously dumb people for piss poor money.

This is extremely accurate in IT. My ex got 3/3 job offers ... No algorithm tests, no take home tests, no personal projects of hers. She didn't have to prove anything and still got the job l.
Every place I've applied to has had multiple algorithm tests and at least a takehome project that requires several hours to complete.
Just my personal experience. All all the women with ZERO experience in code getting hired and put on my team at my last company.

I once helped interview candidates for a support worker position for people with autism. One woman wrote she knew makaton (it's like a basic simplified version of British Sign Language) on her resume.
Since I know BSL myself I asked her about it, but it turns out all she knew was literally just two signs- "biscuit" and "toilet".
I can count to 10 and ask for a beer in Spanish, but I wouldn't write "Spanish" on my CV.

It's just a fact of life to have to consider. I'm mixed race but look predominantly Caucasian. And it's recently occurred to me what an uphill battle things are doing to be if I get into certain industries. Out of 10 equally qualified people, as the caucasian male you are going to come in dead last for anything. Pick wisely, don't try to swim upstream and fight a battle that's already lost.

This even happen in Powergrid. Currently studying for Service Technician, Powergrid. Only woman in class has had a breeze getting internships, allways having her picture on the Facebook page of school for the smallest of teensiest things she does.
We were supposed to have round 2 of internships when Corona hit, basicly for the whole of May, without question my internship was cancelled, along with my summerjob, nuking all of my savings and summer plans. Same thing happened with alot of people in class.
..Meanwhile, the biggest Energy and powergrid provider and owner over here decided to -GO OUT OF THEIR WAY- to break their own internal bulletin in regards to quarantine and have that woman around for her internship, and they fixed accomodations and all that jazz all the way out in the countryside, as to keep her as far away from organisation as possible.
Im seriously dreading looking for work this December, when school finishes up, as it'll be another couple of hundred of applications rejected.. Again..

I've been looking for work for 3 years now.
I cannot tell you how many interviews I've had, because I don't think I could even begin to account for them all. I've gone deep into the next state over several times, opened myself up for cross-country temp contracts, and even went on an interview when I had visible food poisoning. Nobody ever has any complaints, everyone says I've got all the proper qualifications and experience, and unless the person giving the interview has horrible people skills I can get them to laugh or at least make them quite amicable; the ONLY blight on my record is my work gap, and that comes from a very simple but very inescapable fact: NOBODY will hire me, and nobody can ever give a valid reason why.
The issue is that my field, clinical laboratory work, is majority female, much like most of healthcare. You would think the lab would be a meritocracy, where expertise and years under the belt would count, but nah; wherever women predominate, that goes out the window. The ONLY place that actually hired me was a temp assignment ostensibly for 12 weeks, and I was ONLY considered because the woman they had planned to work the job flaked out at the last second, and they needed someone on short notice. That job lasted ONE day; by the time I'd gotten back home from working my first (and only) shift, the agent already had a message on the answering machine saying they were terminating the contract (as is their right). When I responded that there hadn't even been enough time theoretically for me to have done something worth such an action, since I'd spent most of that day filling out paperwork and getting signed in to various things, the guy said he'd look into it. A day or so later he gave me a reason that was so obviously bullshit it actually confused me more than anything else: apparently the cause they gave was that they were expecting me to have familiarity with a particular instrument, but the problem is that I put a list of all the instruments I have experience with on my resume, so there's no way they couldn't have known what instruments I knew. Any lab worth their salt will invariably have to spend a week or two with you to train you their systems anyway, so it reeked of an excuse. My theory is that the leadership of the lab was in disarray, and apparently the last thing the current lab people wanted was a white man in the lab, since I'd be the only one.
Point is, there's only one reason I wouldn't get hired given my qualifications, and that's the fact that I'm a man. I don't necessarily think it's because every person I interviewed with was sexist, but I think the desire to have 'diversity' quotas means that white men get the short end of the stick every time, so unless I'm the sole person applying for a position, I'd lose it to any uterus that bothers to show up, regardless of how they'd stack up to me. Bottom line: how well you do on the interview doesn't matter if they're not considering men in the first place; you showing up and spending your time/money to be there is just a pretense to give the illusion they don't have diversity quotas.

Can relate. I've got what would be equivalent to an associate's degree in logistics. I'm also studying industrial engineering. Pretty much ALL women that had studied/studies with me got an internship or a full time job in the field already. Women who always would've come to me for help.
Menwhile i've been searching for a job for the last 2-3 years, without not even being called for interviews for the most part. In the rare times that i'm called same shit happens, the interviewers are ALWAYS women, and the final result is always "you are very cool and all, good qualifications, but we will go with someone else". I can't even say ok, i must improve on X and Y because... i have no freaking clue what/if i'm doing something wrong at all.
Think kind of bullshit got me a bit depressed and absolutely made me despise anything HR related. Seeing HR women boasting on linkedin how they "helped someone's carrer" is absolutely nauseating.
I love the field. Logistics and IE are things that are easy to fall in love with IMO, but at the same i'm so fucking sad that i probably won't ever get to work with it. 7 fucking years and a ton of money wasted.
Started to work on a masters and another degree on IT this year because i absolutely quit from trying to find a job, especially with the corona stuff, so there's that.

I very rarely get feedback on interviews myself, other than the 'we went with someone else' email weeks after your interview; thing is, what limited feedback I have gotten is quite clearly so bullshit it's a clear cover for discrimination. One of the interviews I had was on an offshore island, and despite missing the ferry I was supposed to take due to being confused as to which wharf it was taking off from, I managed to get there only a half hour late. The lab was awesome, and by the end of the interview I thought I'd won them completely over not only with my personality, but with my knowledge of the instrument they were bringing online at the time. Obviously, I didn't get that job, and the feedback was just bizarre from the agency who asked on my behalf: apparently being a half hour late due to the ferry was a deal breaker, despite the fact that I'd be living on the island; also, when I was sat down in the director's office and told to wait there for her to arrive, instead of doing what I was told, I was supposed to have gone back into the lab I'd just had a tour of, and just apparently schmooze with all the lab workers. I was like, dafuq?
It really depresses the shit out of me that it's becoming undeniable that either diversity quotas or overt sexism is preventing me from having a job, and like you I'm having to consider alternative career paths in the hopes that maybe those lines of work aren't as discriminatory. I'm considering becoming a pharmacy tech, but the notion of working essentially a retail job pushing pills makes me nervous as hell, because I got into lab work to get away from retail. Until society wakes up to the sexism against men, my odds aren't going to change.
with such a shitty career prospect, you're better off learning how to be a repair man and flip used/broken electronic products and resell them on amazon/ebay. Hell some guys make an okay living selling collectible cards. I know the feeling of apply and apply and they never hire you.

Corporations are quickly realizing that politics only sell for a certain amount of time before they start costing them. For example that BLM profile picture blackout. If a big company chose to black out their logo in solidarity, they are now expected to do this for every other socially perceived "oppressed" group of people. Finally they will have no choice but to comply to the mob's demands or else face the backlash of the mob' wrath. This is why appealing to radical left groups who hate capitalism is a bad thing.

I have a masters degree in engineering with several years of experience. I was interviewed for a job opening and never got a call back. I have a friend who was working at the same company, and he told me that the opening went to this girl fresh out of college with a bachelors.
I got turned down despite being significantly more qualified because I am an asian man while the person who beat me out has a vagina.
They always came up with a lot of bullshit reasons like "he's over qualified." "too much experience. he will leave when another opportunity comes" Duh, most people would go for a better opportunity regardless of gender. Your chances of getting hired or not for a job is mostly based on whether the interviewers like you or not.
If they hate you from the get-go, then you're doomed!

Made me think. Last year when I was in junior year of high school (I’m literally the only white person in the entire school btw), they had a “mock interview” where we interviewed for a job and then the interviewers would grade us based on how well we did. We had practice interviews in class beforehand, and as far as I could tell I was the best, although the bar wasn’t set that high. My teacher complimented me, and I spent a long time actually thinking of answers to potential questions beforehand and practicing, while my classmates did no preparation. In the “interview,” the interviewer was incompetent and didn’t actually try to make conversation with me. She just repeated the same few surface-level questions while I struggled to come up with different ways to phrase the same answer. She also didn’t break intense eye contact throughout the entire thing, which was very uncomfortable. The entire interview also seemed wooden and generally was unpleasant, and she didn’t attempt to ask questions which would’ve actually let me talk about myself. By the way, I was within earshot of other interviews and heard their interviewers actually talking to the students. At the end, she came up with a few bullshit reasons as to why my interview skills sucked including me looking off to the side 20% of the time because the eye contact was creepy, and she graded me quite harshly. When I talked to my classmates afterwards, they were graded much higher than me, and the interviewers all said to them “I would hire you irl” (very cringe I am aware). They were shocked when I told them how my interview went. I always thought that this was just extremely unlucky, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the reason was because I’m white and a male.
