Women are a minority here but surprisingly no more so than the rest of reddit I think. Hard to tell really. On the internet everyone is a dog.

Some of the most prominent MRAs are women. It might be about 50-50 at the most visible levels because women are "allowed" to talk about gender issues more than men out in our society.

Anyway there's none of that "ally" shit here. Women are MRAs on the exact same basis as all people.

You can be an MRA despite being a woman. We're not going to treat you any differently. (You've been told this a lot, but I think it's important to emphasize it really is the majority, or even unanimous opinion.)

The fact is, most of us are ex-feminists of varying colors.

You'll find a lot of ex-feminists here. Me included. You come to see after getting away from it for a while that the very vile and extreme radfems are just a very loud minority. Quite an influential minority, but not a group that you should allow to have any impact on your life. Just stay inquisitive and don't let anybody bully you into believing X/Y/Z, whether you're here or on the feminist boards (although I think you'll find this place way more open to other opinions. Stupid things tend to get downvoted as opposed to the author being hounded and shit-talked.)

And also, the most popular MRAs are women. Christina Hoff Sommers and Karen Straughan in particular. Check out the GirlWritesWhat youtube channel if you haven't yet. The MRM is an egalitarian movement and your junk does not limit the extent to which you can get involved. I think it was something like 40% of the speakers at the AVfM conference who were women. Which is a better gender split than you'd ever see at a feminist convention.

Can I give you some shit-in-your-coffee type of advice that I'm probably gonna get blasted for? I've read your little story. Don't go full MRA like you went full SJW. Be an MRA if you want but believe me, you will inevitably see some stories, opinions and collective reactions that will feel off and you might be afraid to criticize because of some "greater good" all-or-nothing group mentality. Don't. AND following said criticism, don't feel shocked if you'll have people verbally ganging up on you in return, because that can happen in here as well.

Both sides have valid points but when you mix emotion in, things become heated, it's hard to remain unbiased.

You don't have to be a male to support men's rights, simply recognizing that men have issues which aren't often (or easily) addressed is good help.

Similarly with feminism, but I feel like an outsider in that direction: some of the things I think hurt women are also good and hard won. Equal treatment especially in regards to the law would be a negative thing for women but I wont argue for less harsh punishments for abusers.

Time, patience, integrity, humility. These are the things which I believe will see both sides coming together, for middle ground or mutual action.

What irritates me now is how the institution is used when the points are in favor, even if those facts are skewed to make the point. But I digress.

You don't need to be male to be an MRA, you only need to believe in equal rights. We don't have "real members" and "allies" like the Feminists, that's just a way of segregating people and making sure men "remember their place" and "shut up and listen" when the "real" feminists speak. Man or woman doesn't matter when you are an MRA, and many of the most popular and visible MRAs are women. (Check out GirlWritesWhat)

I'm glad you got help for your troubles. That's the most important thing. Although the more I learn about feminism and social justice, the more I think someone doesn't have to be crazy to join it but it sure helps. Take Suey Park--i used to think she was a little nuts, then she came right out and admitted to it.

Being male is not a requirement of being an MRA. You can be male, female, trans, gay, straight...we don't care what you are. If you believe that equal treatment under the law is a right that everyone should have and that nobody should have special treatment just because of what's between their legs, then welcome aboard, you're an MRA.

I dunno about others (but from what I usually see, it usually applies to practically everyone here), most here are just egalitarians.

I'm all for equality, and I don't like it when either side gleefully crosses the line. You will find a lot of stuff here, from women-support groups to women-hating comments. All we ask is you go through facts presented from wherever you can find. Keep an Open mind, and always try to see it from other perspectives.

Yeah, I know this isn't the place but I was a crazy feminist in the sense I have a lot of mental illnesses. (Diagnosed by a professional, not just tumblr.) That being said, you realise very quickly that when people push you to the point of suicide over your opinion of obesity that something in their logic is fucked up.

PS I think you have cause and effect reversed, Shouldn't sentence 2 come before sentence 1? Just pointing it out cause I believe that the way we type is the way we think (absolute generalization).

For many of them it probably already is too late. But then again, we're not really gonna be able to convince the academically integrated echo-chamber-feminists anyway, but rather the normal people that are dry-humping the proverbial fence, as it were.

And there's no reason to feel embarassed about your past beliefs, I think. Unlike feminists I don't think most people are evil, just clogged up with a lot of shitty ideas.

Both sides of the internet piss fight are toxic at their extremes. Highly extreme view points on all sides of the political spectrum foster mental illness in a dangerous way.

Sadly however, feminism and its progressive ilk gets a media pass on its abhorrent behavior whereas MRAs are fairly universally reviled, sometimes rightly so. Mainlining feminism like many are doing these days is going to end in tragedy. Feminism will eventually spit out an Elliot Rodgers.
