Assuming stellar qualifications, would you hire a woman as your company's CFO? Would you hire a man as your child's nanny?

Yes and yes. Perfectly valid comparison. It's an afront to to women when there are few female CEOs, but those same women don't question why males are so under-represented in female-dominated professions. Good point to make.

I'd hire a man as a nanny, but I wouldn't hire a nanny unless every room was wired up.

And I'd hire a woman as a CFO.... if she was the best candidate.

I worked as a male day-care assistant for almost two years, along with being first choice for babysitting by quite a few years. Although, it isn't really the same as being a nanny. I think it's more about the person than the sex, even though society can blur the lines.

I'm a stay at home mom so I wouldn't require the services of a man-y but I have known a couple, especially of families with active boys or in one case in which the father had passed away.

i used to work with children (im a bloke) and not enough children have a good male role model, or even a male role model at all.

male nanny would be hired, except for the fact that i want to be around for my kids enough not to need a nanny.

Hmm I did pause at the male nanny and I hate myself for it.

I actually think that a male nanny would be preferred in some circumstances, such as if the father of the children was not around, or if you have mostly boys.

I guess some might worry about the paedophilia hysteria, but no one worries about all the women who casually hook up with guys and allow them to step into the role of step father with no thought or vetting.

I hired a woman as my company's CFO just last week. She starts in a month. No issues with it at all, she was the best applicant.

I'm not sure if I'd hire a man to be a nanny. The image in my head has always been that of a woman. Strangely enough I don't have any image of a CFO.

I may be programmed here though, some of my friends have had some stunning au pairs from Europe. The kids grow up learning a foreign language and you have a nice looking girl to look at. Damn I'm a pig, but hang on I'm also not a pig . . .

Yes and yes, but there are far more female CFOs than male nannies. Its not unfair, because both areas of work are what were once seen as belonging to the other gender. Females have ventured into almost all former male bastions while males are still not too common on the other side. It would have been a better comparison with a female carpenter maybe, or electrician. Those are areas where women are still not very welcome. People wonder more about the male nanny, because being a CEO is a high status occupation, its understandable that a woman want it. Being a nanny is low status work. Due to the restrictions females used to have, we now tend to see this kind of work as not worth much. Why would anyone want to be a nanny, and most of all why would a man want to be one we'd think.

I've seen many more CFO's that are female, than I've seen male nannies. If I understand this correctly then there are more nanny positions than CFO positions. I can Imagine that females hold a greater percentage of the CFO positions than males hold of nanny positions.

Speaking of that... I'd like to put a nanny in "position" if you get my "drift".....

I'm the go to nanny for some friends and relatives for years already (3 families overall). Since I can work completely online, I got no problem with commuting all over the country, take care of the kid at day and doing the business communication in the sleeping (or if they play by themselves) breaks, and then doing the programming in the evening/at night. Or vice versa. That's my family life, and I like it.

Also, the CFO of the company I worked before was a woman, and she was one of the most valued and beloved there (nerds hate doing this stuff anyway most of the time).

And my own company now will need an own dedicated finance guy, if the year goes as planned. And my main candidate is a woman that I know, but still studies.

So its perfectly fine either way.

Just a little anecdote but my parents had no problem hiring male babysitters to watch my brother and I when we were kids. Most of them were female but the funnest and most engaging ones, the ones who took us out for fun activities were all male. One of our favorite sitters is now an elementary school principal, he just really likes kids. The one who assaulted my brother with a roman candle was female.

I think when I am a parent that I'll be perfectly happy to hire male childcare.

My boyfriend: "I would do both of those things if I felt that they were the best person for the job."

I think most people here are giving reasonable answers, but I'm not sure how truthful the women are being. I don't think there's any question that most women would feel less comfortable with the male nanny -- because of their own gender biases. And I also have no doubt that a lot of these women would openly admit that, yes, it's probably not fair to judge all men as potential child abusers but you can never be too careful. In fact, that sort of bias is nothing less than misandry -- but that's a word you'll never hear a woman admit she is.

On the other hand, if a man were to admit that he would be less confortable hiring a female CFO for any number of reasons (-- women generally put in less time at work, women get pregnant and disappear to care for the newborn, women generally don't like to travel as much as men, women generally don't play golf or do certain other things that might seem necessary in that job), the man would be widely attacked as a misogynist.

People would definitely have more concern about a man acting as a nanny, though I think a male caretaker would be a different experience for a child that could bring good benefits (possibly more outdoor activity). As far as the CFO thing goes the qualifications are what should matter.

Stellar qualifications to me implies they both come with stellar recommendations from other qualified people. Personal recommendations go a long ways in dissolving my preconditioned bias.

Personally I would be more hesitant with the nanny, but that has more to do with being overly protective and uncertain about leaving my offspring with a person I don't fully know yet, regardless of gender.
