you do realise you could replace a couple words in this and you would have an MRA as the person on the right?
[–]Strayed54321 23 points24 points25 points 9 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
Well that's usually true whenever you have two sides to an issue.
[–]Sir_Stig 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
Exactly, so by making a comic in which only stereotypes are used all it does is cement the stereotype. It would be far better to reach across the aisle and have constructive collaboration than it is for both sides to try and tear each other down.
The best way for the MRM to be taken seriously and not labelled as "he-man woman haters" is to focus on positively impacting society to break down gender biases. I'm sure there are feminists out there that want nothing more than to grind men under their heels in order to advance, just as there are men who will do the same thing, but what both sides should be working on is making equity for all standard: it's not going to be easy but as the saying goes a rising tide raises all boats.
This coming from an outsider who is feminist-sympathetic while also realising there are situations where men also need advocates.
[–]Rethgil 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
"feminist-sympathetic" who coincidentally only posts to disagree with MRA? Oh, right, sure.
[+]Sir_Stig -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I'm not going to call myself a feminist, but that doesn't mean I don't consider myself an ally. Why is that a problem?
[–]Erudite_Delirium 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm not going to call myself someone who has been raped by Sir_Stig, but that doesn't mean I don't consider myself an ally of those who have. Why is that a problem?
[–]Sir_Stig 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Character assassination, nice.
If you ever wonder why people don't take MRA's as anything more than immature manbabies, you can just take this example where one of you compared feminism to rape. I figured I'd lurk a bit and see if there was some merit to the MRM, but it seems it is just the other side of the radicalized coin.

I'll address this, and your comment directed to me, as shown below:
Then cut that person out of your life. There will always be someone who won't shut up about something, pick your battles and your friends to minimise this if you have a problem with it.
with this statement:
You're using logic, and you're expecting those who behave like the person on the right above to use logic.
That is the problem- zealouts are generally zealouts because they have abandoned logic, to fervently defend their cause or their issue in any way they can with everything they have.
This isn't to say that there aren't zealouts of the male persuasion as well-- I fully admit that they exist.
But those who seem to be in control of the feminist narrative behave as zealouts would, and they are not interested in logical discussions towards a solution. I've personally advocated, in this subreddit, much like you have, that we need to come together to work on the ideals of equality. ((Any attempts I've made to do the same in a "feminist" subreddit have resulted in the post being deleted and my-- and other males-- being banned from posting in that subreddit. That should tell you just how much those who claim here in Reddit to be feminist are interested in discussing, and in equality between the genders.))
Your words make sense. But only to those who are willing to listen. And zealouts are not willing to listen to anything that does not agree with their cause or their issue.

Why? What does that gain me personally, or the men's rights initiatives as a whole? We can waste time arguing, or get things done. If we have an initiative that a feminist likes, then they are welcome to donate money or participate. Just like how if they have an initiative that one of us likes.
To engage and argue though, that wastes time. The best thing to do is create a group of like-minded folks, build up a company/charity/lobbying group, stay on-message, and make shit happen. Letting people debate you and argue with you should always fail - never engage, just do what you set out to do.
[–]Sir_Stig -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I wasn't saying you should be debating, I meant basically what you just said. Each side getting behind good initiatives that the others have.
[–]marauderp 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
should be debating
Oh, you mean being called a sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, Islamophobic bigot, then having rumors spread about me among the (IRL) feminist circles that I used to brush shoulders with?
Yeah, did that, no thanks.
[–]Sir_Stig -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
and nothing you said lined up with any of those accusations? Then find a better group.
[–]rawbface 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
For what its worth, I agree with you. The men's rights movement gains nothing from a circlejerk. We can complain about the quality of the sub, blah blah blah, but I think your comment is spot-on.
[–]Sir_Stig 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well it's nice to know someone walks the walk on here
[–]Rethgil -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You agree with someone who just called the MRA 'a bunch of man babies'? Says all I need to know about you.
[–]rawbface 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Where did he say that? Not in the comment I'm agreeing with.
[–]mrmensplights 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh you mean if instead of "Football, Comics, and Video Games" it was the "The Legal System, Custody Rights, and Educational System"? In that case, I completely agree. However, it's unlikely those topics are going to get discussed in casual conversation. It's the steering and injecting of ideology into otherwise mundane topics that the comic is poking fun at.
[–]Stripes1974 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
To me, the point is less about the fact that you can replace a few chosen words by the person on the right and have the narrative become zealoutous rhetoric from any particular group, and more about the fact that the zealoutous person-- or people-- from that group don't recognize when they're being so decidedly unreasonable in their speech by making every conversation about the cause or issue of their group. They think that their conversation is what everyone should be talking about, and that any conversation that counters their own in any way means that there's nothing for them to talk about with anyone.

I haven't seen a concerted effort to inject MRA talking points into every fucking aspect of life and shaming/smear tactics against those who want to keep politics out of video-games coming from MRAs.
So no, you couldn't. I mean you could but it wouldn't be real-world commentary anymore. it's just be a comic about an obsessed MRA.
[–]cranktheguy 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Or a Vegan, a CrossFitter, a Linux user... Really there is a line between a (blank) enthusiast and a (blank) lifestyle. Lifestyle changes aren't always healthy. In my opinion it comes down to whether you can take criticism without offense.
[–]Rethgil 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You do realise everyone can see your comments consistently happen to disagree with pretty much every MRA comment you post on right?
Yup
[–]mkcn97142 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No, explain.
[–]Macismyname 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Sure. The point stands just as well though, people who insert their politics into every conversation are annoying.
I have friends with which I greatly disagree politically. We're friends because we know how to compartmentalize.
[–]Sir_Stig 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's not the point of posting this comment though.
[–]Macismyname 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
No but it should be.
Luckily it's just a silly comic, not a serious post.
And regardless I was talking about your point. You say the comic is bad because it's point could be applied to our side as well. I say, good. Let it. Let's recognize that the real problem is the behavior, not the people with a different opinion.
I'm saying it isn't constructive.

More than 90 percent of workplace deaths are of men. Let's make it 50%. More women should die.
Or maybe we could cut down on workplace deaths period?

deconstruction in a nutshell!
[–]Kalcipher 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That is dumb. When acting in a way that would cause you to think of them or classify them as 'feminists', then indeed they will be talking about gender-related issues, but even the most toxic feminists I have encountered can talk about topics without bringing gender into it (though they will generally retain their toxicity even then)
[–]Rethgil 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well that clears that up. Having briefly browsed many of the posters in this page, such as the example of the gay guy who repeatedly defends his feminists friends whilst repeatedly posting in the MRA section only to argue and not seemingly able to admit men suffer pretty much at all... Its pretty clear that very few actual average men's rights posters commented on this post at all. So I guess we don't get to hear their views on this.
[–]Kalcipher 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I am not quite sure what you mean by this post, but I'm not exactly an average men's rights poster. I don't know if your example is referring to me, since I am a gay guy who sometimes defends feminism (though I can't recall having talked much about feminist friends) and I do often argue here, but I'm very much able to admit that men are discriminated against, both systemically and casually, and that men can and often do suffer. Though this may sound like an average MRA perspective, I come to this subreddit specifically because I disagree with a lot of ideas that are prevalent in the MRA community, and it has been my experience that reading the words of people who politically disagree with me can be beneficial in a lot of ways, but mostly I call out errors in reasoning, like I did here earlier.
As far as I can tell, the understanding of feminism reflected in the comic is the result of applying the accessibility heuristic without any skepticism or second-guessing.
[–]dacripplershit -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
er yeah but it's true....whether an ardent feminist or a far leaning mra...both drink the koolaid and can't have an honest conversation about real equality for all. I'm just surprised she didn't mention the lack of girls in coding

Don't turn this place into /r/atheism. This is just angry teenage bullshit.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is a comic from a trans-feminist. Posting the materials that feminists create is not teenage bullshit, it's pure observation.
