Femininitysofragile !

[–]bertreapot 82 points83 points84 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I think it’s important to remember that threats are more than someone saying I’m going to come to your house and I’m going to hurt you,” she said. “Insulting someone’s appearance, insulting someone’s religion, or their race, you know, all of that to me constitutes a threat and I think we can make changes to how we control that dialogue on the internet without threatening our First Amendment rights.

Contradiction in terms. You can't call insulting people a threat that should be banned, and then immediately say that dialogue should be in tune with the 1st amendment. The 1st amendment allows free speech, which includes insults. Insults =/= threats. Actual threats are threats, and are not protected speech.

Feminism needs to stop reclassifying everything they don't like as something illegal when it isn't, then cry fowl when people do what they're perfectly entitled to do.

[–]enjoycarrots 37 points38 points39 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And at the same time, the want the freedom to insult and defame anybody they think is a misogynist.

[–]intensely_human[🍰] 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Feminism prides itself on modifying definitions. Modifying definitions is an enormous source of power (ask anyone who monkey patches code) and feminism has mastered it, and is very proud of it.

It's not like it's some sneaky sketchy thing they do, it's a very conscious thing. It's so mind bending, right?? Our culture is itself obsessed with modifying definitions, so feminism plays into and draws on that.

Being able to speak in code is cool, and exclusive. Not sure what the exact sociological term for it is, but it's a status symbol to have particular vocabulary, to understand and use a vocabulary. And when you take existing vocabulary and re-map it, you can speak in code without others even realizing it.

A real master can not only see the universe in a grain of sand, but can also convey that to others. A master for example can re-frame how you see things, can call you "grasshopper", can tell you that your robe is a weapon, can tell you that death is a blessing. These are all "nonsense" sayings which make sense upon seeing some deeper connection.

A genius teacher can truly blow your mind by saying things which sound crazy but are actually true, like "the past and the future do not exist" or they can blow your mind by saying something totally sensical like "your pinkie is a perfect fit for your nostril".

But those moments where a profound truth is presented by slamming you with something which initially sounds like nonsense, where words are stretched in their meaning, we have a big time artistic appreciation for that in our culture.

Unfortunately, this breeds whole armies of pretenders who seek to approximate the effect by just saying nonsense. They don't realize they're supposed to say it on top of a foundation of fact, they think the nonsense is itself the wisdom.

And it's very hard to tell the difference. So for every true master speaking crazy truth in weird format, there are ten charlatans just spouting bullshit and hoping to be mistaken for a master.

Some even think that it is a sign of intellectual success to be bending the meaning of words, regardless of whether the truth actually warranted it or not.

So this creates a rich ground for the growth of things like feminism which say "okay now things you didn't think are rape, are rape". "Things you didn't think were slavery, are now revealed as slavery." It is assumed that changing definitions are a sign of progress.

And our society is very willing to lap that up. It's just our current condition. In other cultures and times, maybe this shit wouldn't fly. But here and now, we're very enamored with people who bend words away from their original meanings. We think that's really cool, and we see it as the mark of a leader.

[–]bertreapot 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Feminism gets away with modifying definitions because no one calls them on it. That's where we come in.

[–]SuperPwnerGuy 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh, Cunt is a sexist word now?....How about prick, Is prick sexist now to?

[–]NUMBERS2357 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I like how that's the opposite of what people normally say. Usually it's "it's not just run of the mill attacks, it's threats". Now, "it's not just threats, it's run of the mill attacks!"

Yes, there should be an exception to the First Amendment saying you can't insult Lena Dunham's appearance.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Freedom of speech that is limited to only that what doesn't offend you undermines the point of freedom of speech.

[–]SRSLovesGawker 36 points37 points38 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

O noes.

Gotta put a space before the hash tag on Reddit or it bolds it

[–]levelate 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

kinda works, though.

[–]intensely_human[🍰] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Technically what it's doing it making it into a "header" format which in this case just ends up kinda bold.

Also a backslash before the tic tac toe sign (I mean number sign I mean pound sign I mean hash mark I mean hashtag) "escapes" it meaning that it tells the markdown interpreter you don't want it as a formatting trigger, just a literal character.

[–]JulianneLesse 21 points22 points23 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The same woman who complained about the lack of racial diversity of Hollywood when she is the creator of Girls, a show with an all white cast... that is set in New York.

[–]modix 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

all white cast

And all the main characters are upper class white females from NY. It's a subset of a subset of a subset.

[–]whitemanrunning 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The loss of Dunham from twitter will be debilitating...

[–]FalconGK81 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What will we do!?!?

[+]ZinkWattoomGazork 10 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Insulting someone’s appearance, insulting someone’s religion, or their race, you know, all of that to me constitutes a threat

Yeah, stupid white male Christians.

[–]houseQM 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Better Call Saul!

[–]FalconGK81 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The idea of insulting someone being equivalent to a threat is too stupid for words.

[–]CelestialDos 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Best news all day. No more of this rapist on twitter. What is there to complain about?

[–]selfiereflection 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Didn't she sexually molest her younger sister?

[–]atheist4thecause[🍰] 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes. She wrote about it in her book.

[–]FalconGK81 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup, and then when people reported on it, she threatened to sue them for libel. And they're like "you can't sue us for libel for just reprinting what you said". LOL.

[–]Lethn 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Many women use the internet with barely any problems compared to people like Lena Dunham, she can fuck off. By the way, isn't this the most spoiled thing one could possibly say about the internet? She's basically declaring that the government or company has to create special rules specifically for her so she can use it.

[–]B_P_G 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Twitter stock up 37 cents on the news...

[–]soalone34 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Twitter should totally take advice from false rape accusers and admitted child molesters.

[–]Penultimatemoment 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nothing of value was lost.

[–]Aaod 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]TheDude41 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Insulting someone’s appearance, insulting someone’s religion, or their race, you know, all of that to me constitutes a threat

Well no really. Now that you mention it, it's not.

[–]Leinadro 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Twitter is better off without crybabies that want special protection for their group only from something that affects everyone.

To hell with her.

[–]Arakin4 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

God she is such a fucking horrendous creature. Fuck her and her stupid show. I love that we live in such a stupid society that a girl can get famous for being ugly and out of shape and starring in a show that is just worthless and about sex, and suddenly be meeting senators and presidents and being interviewed on politics and people actually care.

[–]hungershit 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good riddance.

[–]ShutUpLieberman 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]oklahomaeagle 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]electricalnoise 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]NYComrade 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If all women looked and acted like her, humanity would be extinct in one generation.

[–]TheDude41 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Chivalry is shit.

[–]philosarapter 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Man I sure do hate the pandora's box of bullshit that is twitter. Cases like this really shows how spoiled people have become. The most terrible thing they've ever experienced is someone calling them names on the internet. People like that ought to experience some real suffering for once, so they can get some fucking perspective.

Secondly, I thought feminism was about empowering women? How is censoring insults from the internet empowering? Isn't that just an admission of weakness to ask for protection? What ever happened to becoming a strong willed person who doesn't base their self-worth on the opinions of strangers?

[–]SCROTAL-SACK 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm still not entirely sure who in the fuck this frumpy ugly bitch is. All I know about her is she's a molester of a child (by her own admittance). Who gives a shit what she does?

edit: clicked link.. God she is hideous.

[–]oklahomaeagle 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Calm down with the threats there bud.

[–]SCROTAL-SACK 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]vilefeildmouseswager 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I do not believe they could have found a worse picture of her.

[–]Wargame4life 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]justcantwin1111 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

“I’ve been fairly public about that fact that I no longer check my own Twitter,” she said. “I found that the hostility, particularly the hostility towards women and the expressions of violence were too much.”

this fucking scank pedophile again.

Well bye.

[–]jaheiner 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]TheDude41 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Insulting someone’s appearance, insulting someone’s religion, or their race, you know, all of that to me constitutes a threat

Well no really. Now that you mention it, it's not.

But just for kicks, here is Lena Dunham being generally insulting to Christians as she is more or less routinely. You know, pretty much the way everyone knows her to be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6dqA-KQ3kE

Damseling and chivalry are total shit. Suck it up, buttercup.

http://starecat.com/content/wp-content/uploads/women-feminist-internet-opinions-help-misogyny.jpg

[–]secv808 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Pretty funny but not men's rights.

[+]Arakin 10 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes. Yes it is. Calling for special protections online for only women is a sexist request and a potentially harmful one that can result in more cases like that man in Canada being potentially thrown in jail for what he wrote online, simple disagreement with a feminist.

[–]secv808 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It is sexist, but I seriously doubt something said by Dunham is enough to actually create changes in policy.

[–]Arakin3 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It isn't JUST Lena though, that's the point. TONS of Feminists are trying to make this happen. Remember the Canadian who almost went to jail? The women milo was arguing with recently They're everywhere

[–]tiqr 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't care for dunham either - but this is definitely not a Men's Rights issue.

[–]vilefeildmouseswager 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More of an internet freedom issue

[–]rottingchrist 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Censorship being driven by members of the largest voting group (not men) is very much a men's rights issue. Especially when similar tactics are often applied to silence those speaking about men's issues.

[–]USModernMilitia -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I find it funny that the women claiming they are under attack look just like that disgusting bitch. They are sad because they are hairy sacks of fat shit and want to lash out. Here's the feminists slogan... "It's not fair that I'll never be that pretty! It's not fair that nobody wants me too! Anybody prettier than me shouldn't be allowed on social media!!"

[–]GoldenGonzo 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sinking to their level and using personal insults only weakens your argument and makes you (and the rest of us by association) look childish.
