Today I decided to have a little read up about what the gender pay gap is (or isn’t) meant to be and I’m absolutely astonished.

"There are facts behind these feelings"... and stopped reading after that lol.

In an often-cited study with multiple methodological shortcomings, women were given sedatives more often for pain after surgery, whereas men were more likely to receive analgesics.30 This has led many to conclude that women are at risk for under-treatment of their pain.

However, a recent review of this literature concluded that while women and men are often treated differently, this disparity sometimes favours women and sometimes favours men.31

If you click on their link it even says it's not an actual fact that men get better treatment. Women might be treated differently but it can be positive or negative.

So like... experiences May vary?

[–]NibblyPig 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I read a study that quoted a doctor saying guys underreported their pain all the time, like a guy with a broken arm bone protruding and the doctor asked what pain on 1-10 scale and the guy was like '4'

[–]dirtywombat 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Anecdotally, I've broken my left wrist multiple times. All times I didn't think I broke it. I didn't get an xray until too late twice because I under reported or experienced pain.

[–]KochiraJin 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wonder if there is a difference in the side effects of sedatives and analgesics between men and women.

[–]Hound_of_Hell 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dumb question. Whats the difference between a sedative and an analgesic

This "pain gap" is a thing I only learned about recently but it's popping up more and more. When you look into it a bit more it is literally about women feeling they are not treated as fairly. There was a guy on reddit saying he knows this for a fact because he went with his gf to a doctor and he could witness they weren't taking her seriously. Not that he tried to do the same as a man to the same doctor, nope. He just decided she wasn't taken seriously enough and that was his proof.

They had a bunch of studies and data but I ignored it too.

The Gender Suicide Gap
The Gender Homelessness gap
The Gender Education Gap
The Gender Medical research Gap
The Cancer Death Gap
The Casualties of War gap

And what’s crazy with all those gender gaps, is that they’re still only focusing on the female side of things and not the male side, even though the men are suffering more in those areas.

Like how they continue to give specific college scholarships to women only, and favor them in applications and much more, despite them already making up the majority of college students. And as well how they complain about female homelessness when the majority of homeless people are male. It’s quite obvious that men are much less valued in society.

[–]TrueNeutrall0011 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Well they do that to themselves so... Besides, what's that have to do with ME?"

[–]Ronniebbb 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I dont think pain gap is a legit thing ppl need to bitch about. Ppl experience pain different, men women etc. Ppl will have situations the other sex cannot experience just by biology. I think the biggest thing is we need to listen to eachother when someone says "hey im in pain because of x and it is a __ out of 10." And support them and get them medical help.

And doctors and nurses especially need to take ppl seriously with it. You may not think it's that bad but you're not in their body experiencing it. You need to listen to the patient and take it seriously.

Like I have endometriosis, my periods are like someone is stabbing me with literal Glass for 1.5 weeks a month. I've passed out. It's horrible and luckily.many others don't have to experience it. Docs just need to take it more seriously

[–]Angryasfk 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I had a friend who got told she had endometriosis. You should have seen how shocked she was when she got pregnant: “how is it possible?” she asked me! Fortunately she wanted children. It turns out her doctor (or should I say “quack”) had misdiagnosed her. She used to have really bad period pain and cramping (still does) and this was simply taken as being endometriosis. I guess it was the “diagnosis of the month”. I hope they gave you a proper test.

What can you do about it? Does ibuprofen help much? Is surgery an option?

Just interested.

[–]Ronniebbb 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I actually have had a proper test and am currently on various treatment plans with a specialist till we can schedule a surgery. I'm not a priority case ie, im not bleeding to death, nor actively trying to make a baby, so im not a high priority for surgery. But if the treatment doesn't work thst im doing, ill be on the list come August.

Ibuprofen does nothing from me funny enough, probably cus when I was a teen and this started to show I was told the old method by my doc. Take two ibuprofen each day a week leading up to your period than take max dosage during. Now we know ibuprofen isn't good for women and that isn't good for anyone, but endo wasn't taken as seriously back then.

My mum also had endo, but she got pregnant twice and that cured it funny enough. I'd try that route but well I can't afford babies lol

[–]Angryasfk 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is there anything that actually does give you relief?

My friend would take ibuprofen for a couple of weeks at a time, and it played havoc with her gastric system - she had a number of “accidents” shall we say and would throw up a lot. I thought it was her condition but eventually realised it was simply taking ibuprofen for too long a stretch. She actually realised it, but preferred the humiliation to the cramping.

[–]Ronniebbb 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not much. Tyneole helps with the backpain I get from it. I most just either lay down or sit down and wait for the insane pain to pass....couple times passed out. That was fun.

I have a dog and he's knows when it's bad and curls up on me or beside me and snuggles in close. His body heat helps

They often cry that all medication is geared towards men and their bodies. They argue that the reason for this is the patriarchy. When in fact the real reason for this is that whenever an unknown drug is tested on a human, it's almost always a man. We get the privilege of being lab rats after trials are successful on real rats.

[–]SodaBoBomb 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also, there's way more money spent on women's health than men's so

[–]Greg_W_Allan 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When in fact the real reason for this is that whenever an unknown drug is tested on a human, it's almost always a man.

It's often been captive audiences such as soldiers or prisoners.

[–]Angryasfk 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists do anyway - you see it’s all “men’s fault”.

[–]bastiroid -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry, but that's not true. Medication is mostly tested on men due to lower hormonal differences between test subjects. Women's hormonal cycles make it difficult to compare results. Of course, that's spun as patriarchy in action and not taking care of women. But in the end its just to ensure that test results are correct.

[–]lumpynose 24 points25 points26 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

This comes up chronically on twox.

Even when their doctors and nurses are women they claim that the medical community is ignoring their greater pain. And of course in their minds it's yet another example of the patriarchy screwing them over for no logical reason.

To me it's yet another example of evolution with men being emotionally stronger and not bursting into tears at the first sign of pain and difficulty.

On a similar topic, one of the repeated posts on twox that shows how emotionally fragile they can be is when they get a pap smear; having an gynecologist (typically female) examining their vagina is very traumatizing. Some of them are crying during the entire procedure.

[–]NAKA_NI_DASHITE 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To me it's yet another example of evolution with men being emotionally stronger and not bursting into tears at the first sign of pain and difficulty.

Yep, women brag about their pain tolerance too, but according to research on the topic men have far greater pain tolerance than women. Women are more likely to complain about pain, seek medical help for pain, and take more painkillers than men. Mysterious pain conditions with little diagnostic criteria are also far more frequently suffered by women.

Doctors keep searching for an answer but I don't think it's going to be biological. It's going to be social or psychological.

[–]TrueNeutrall0011 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I've had broken bones and been denied painkillers because it's seen as drug seeking behaviour. Took me several hours to convince them I was actually in pain, simply because I couldn't stop saying fuck over and over again lmao. They knew by that point too I had a broken bone. Medical staff can be Sadistic as fuck. And God help you if you try to speak up about it because then you're abusing them and you're in deep shit.

Huh. Kind of like women now that I think about it.

Of course these idiots think it's a gender specific problem. It's the ace to get any problem solved and even the Sadistic ass fuck doctors will tremble when called MISOGYniE!

[–]KochiraJin 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Took me several hours to convince them I was actually in pain, simply because I couldn't stop saying fuck over and over again lmao.

That's incredibly stupid. Swearing is known to reduce pain.

[–]TrueNeutrall0011 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Medical staff and the medical field, especially nursing, seems to attract the most sadistic women lmao.

[–]Luftywaffle 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This reminds me of that office heat thing where it was hotter for females than guys or something

[–]Hound_of_Hell 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How the aircon being on is a sign of oppression or the patriarchy as its too cold

I bet men working in scorching heat or freezing conditions would love to switch places

[–]Catch-the-Rabbit 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Imo it is important with your GP to be of the same gender as you.

Men don't understand menstrual cramps just like women don't understand testicular sensitivity.

Women are thought to be oversensitive and emotional while men are thought to be stoic and not need help.

We can do better for each other.

[–]lewandisney69 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Bro they find absolutely everything to complain about

women wait on average 65 mins in hospital waiting rooms, while men wait 49 mins

Literally something in this person’s article lol

[–]Greg_W_Allan 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

while men wait 49 mins

I wish.

I smashed my shoulder at age 13. Sat in the hospital waiting area for nearly eight hours without even a Panadol. When they finally bothered to look I was immediately raced off to surgery. Forty years later I had similar treatment after breaking my heel bone into seven pieces.

[–]killcat 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

And no examination of WHY? As in "what was their reason for being their?"

[–]sorebum405 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly, they just assume that it is because of discrimination. This could be due to other factors like hospital overcrowding, and differences in triage scores. So for example,if a greater proportion of men have serious emergencies that would make the average wait time for men lower. It's the same nonsense that they pull with the supposed "wage gap" just looking at differences in averages and not accounting for variables that may explain the difference.

[–]ExMuzzy 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We know men have a lower likelihood of going in for minor illnesses so yes, it's likely they had shorter waiting times due to how triaging works.

This is Unacceptable!

This is the Most Victim Complex link I have EVER Encountered.

Have they Ever by Chance heard about such thing as Painkillers?

This is exaggerated. I don't feel sorry for their victim playing ass.

I would tell them straight to the face: Pain will leave once it is DONE teaching you!

I Don't go easy on women. Shame and Disgrace that they whine about God Pain, instead of Using the Pain to derive the Lessons.

But I will always go easy on men. They are the Unsung heroes. Their Pain remains most unnoticed. Remember the Empathy gap? Angers me to Death.

Women playing victims are of the worst. I will NEVER tolerate them.

There is No such thing as Pain Gap. It's only a Fictional Movie. Just like Misogyny.

[–]DemonKai7 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's not a big deal, harsh-pain-no-gain. Sometimes, even guys who only know English, can screw up.

[–]Harsh-Pain-No-Gain 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, nobody is exempt from mistakes. We just pray ours to be of the small mistakes, if we accidentally do something wrong.

[–]DemonKai7 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'd say making mistakes is awesome. Cause if you're always putting pressure on yourself to be perfect, you're only making things worse for you. Whereas, when you don't really bother much about it and just do your thing, you're at peace with yourself. You can't really let people's opinion rule your mind.

[–]Harsh-Pain-No-Gain 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Very Based Point.

We are meant to mistake and learn lessons from the mistakes.

New agenda is the gender pain gap? Wtf?

Everyone has different pain tolerance. Just like tolerance to spicy food, pain is just the same: random across all race and gender. We can not quantify and generalize people's pain tolerance as a whole. You can pluck or wax my hairs and I wouldn't scream or flinch. You can take me to carnival rides, and it wouldn't faze me. When I was a kid, I had my eyebrow stitched without sedatives from an accident, and the accident that left my eyebrow skin tore open bleeding didn't even faze me. I just walked it all off. Wisdom tooth sprung early and got cavities, had to muster up courage after 4th try of numbing needle failed to numb me, didn't even cry compared to the boy before me who had pasta application on his front tooth.

The menstrual pain that women claim is that painful, have tolerance built up from doing martial arts while on period and pain doesn't bother me unless I want to take leave off. Pain gap only exists if people will gender generalize specific groups of people's pain tolerance.

“Men had an average waiting time of 49 minutes”

When I was 17, I had extreme abdominal pain, which was later found out to be appendicitis. I waited from 10am to 5pm in a waiting room just to get seen to. Wasnt allowed any food or water either, and I hadnt had breakfast as I went straight to GP, then ER, after waking up

7 hours of “this could burst and I could die right now”

This is actually true, it's no fault of men, perhaps the higher addiction levels for men could be being done purposely. It's an interesting issue. On one hand women do naturally better handle pain due to our hormones. We have to get through the pain of a melon tearing its way through a grapefruit size opening. So yeah, nature gave us a bit of help lol. But how we all absorb & utilize pain meds are tricky because we're all different races (even though some say our only difference is our skin tone, that's just not true & it's a disservice not to fully investigate what makes us different, the positive & the negative). I had read about this like 11 years ago & can't find the articles & studies I read now. I was in pain management for a back injury & Vicodin wasn't working, it stopped working an hour before the next dose & left me w/ a bad headache. The doctor mentioned that I may be a super metabolizer or resistant. I starting looking into that & found that my racial makeup (Amerimutt, native American & Northern European make it more likely I could have issues w/ metabolizing meds. I think so many women experience issues w/ pain management is because we're not great at advocating for ourselves, we're more likely to just accept what a doctor says as gospel. I'm babbling, but yeah, there are a lot of problems in healthcare, this is a real one that existed even before the government's war on pain killers (which hasn't helped, it's actually worsened addiction w/ the rise of cheap fentanyl. I wonder who was bribed to make that happen?

[–]KochiraJin 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But how we all absorb & utilize pain meds are tricky because we're all different races

I don't think we currently know how much race affects most medications, but it should be obvious that there are differences between individuals. You just need to look at the rare side effects that any medication warns you about for it to be apparent.

even though some say our only difference is our skin tone, that's just not true & it's a disservice not to fully investigate what makes us different, the positive & the negative

Some medical researchers managed to train an AI to identify race from x-ray pictures. Many people decided this was racist.
