If it is real, that's severely depressing. If it's not, it's still fucking depressing.

This specific case has almost undoubtedly happened at some point in history. The guy that wrote it thinks it's fiction.
That said, I don't really think this is a Men's Rights issue. There would have been some contact, somewhere. Either in court, or randomly in public.

This is close to my story, except there was another family. I'm the youngest of the kids, so I have almost no memories of him. When he finally did get cancer, I was months away from turning 18. That social security money was the only support I ever received from him. He died the following year.
I still never spoke to him since I was 3-4ish.
This story is only so sad when you consider that the father only attempted contact through letters. It is assumed that he is in the same city still.

I suspect you'd be very surprised by what a DV protection order can do, or the threat of one. (Don't forget to couple that with child support payments so that dad will have no hope of being able to retain a lawyer!)
[+]SuperGoliath -14 points-13 points-12 points 14 years ago (35 children) | Copy Link
Could be. I wouldn't bet on it though.
Also, in my experience, most child support goes unpaid. A state line is a magical defensive barrier apparently. My mom hunted that asshole down for years. Even when she had all of his information and address, the state refused to act. That is just my case though. I am still not convinced that this story is authentic to the poster.
I will probably be downvoted for this, because I assume other people love their dads, but for years, I just wished that he had gotten cancer and died earlier. My mom struggled for years and I was the only one that got social security money from his disability and for only a few months. My siblings were all past the age to receive benefits.
[–]Peter_Principle_ 9 points10 points11 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I would do some research before I laid down my money.
Also, in my experience,
States have an incredible amount of power to enforce the collection of child support. They can revoke drivers licenses, garnish wages, revoke business licenses, put liens on property and issue arrest warrants and put people in jail. The states are paid by the Feds to collect it, so it's not like they don't have a strong incentive to do so. Unless your story is rather old, your father is/was a very lucky man.
I am still not convinced that this story is authentic to the poster.
It may very well not be, but it is nonetheless an entirely too possible scenario. Anyone who doesn't like living in a police state should blanch at the idea that it is.
[–]rantgrrl 8 points9 points10 points 14 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link
Statistically most men pay child support, proportionately more then non-custodial mothers it should be said.
In fact most often men who don't pay, CAN'T PAY.
If your father was on social security for disability, is it possible he couldn't actually pay?

Statistically most men pay child support
I'd be curious to see the statistics, though not enough to hit ctr+t.
I find it improbable to think that payments couldn't be made through a child's whole life. If so, don't stick your dick in anything but a fleshlight. You would probably save more money that way anyhow.
My mom tracked him for 14 years. She dealt with the police a lot and always got something along the lines of 'he's out of state, not our jurisdiction'.
I'm going to drop this whole thing for now. I like r/MensRights, but if you guys want to argue that there is no real thing as a deadbeat dad, I'm done. That's all. Dads DO get screwed, that is not what I am saying, but there are shitty fucking dudes out there that will just walk the fuck away.

Are you seeing the double standard here?

Actually, in a society where consent to fatherhood is not enshrined in law but consent to motherhood is... I really don't think there are such things as 'deadbeat dads.'
Financial and social obligations are meant to be made of your own free will; if they're not freely chosen, then they are coerced and unethical and the person(man) so coerced is not ethically obligated to fulfill them.
I find it improbable to think that payments couldn't be made through a child's whole life.
Not sure where you're going with this statement.
If so, don't stick your dick in anything but a fleshlight. You would probably save more money that way anyhow.
Hm. Do you include women in this? I doubt it. Somehow women don't have any financial obligation to take care of the children they unilaterally decide to produce and no one ever says 'stick to cucumbers if you can't pay' to them.
I guess you've only got her to go on. In which case she can cast herself in whatever light she wishes.
Maybe she did 'track' him for 14 years. Or maybe she got the money and never told you.
I guess you'll never really know.

There is. My ex is one. He wanted the kids we had. The first two were planned, and the third a surprise neither of us was particularly devastated by.
When I decided to divorce, I gave him half the furniture, a full kitchen worth of cutlery, dishes and pots and pans, bedding, linens, tea and bath towels, 2/3 of our savings, the vacuum cleaner and even a 12-pack of toilet paper. I loaned him my van to move it all, told him not to worry about child support for a year, so he could get on his feet, and granted him unlimited access (including a key to the house).
He moved to a neighboring town a ferry ride away, where the kids couldn't ever just drop in and see him--everything had to be prearranged. Even though his job was in OUR town. He quit that job, worked on call for the entire year, living in a basement apartment he knew he could only have for 14 months. He called shortly after the year was up to say he had a good job and should be able to start paying support, but he never did. And when he lost both the apartment and the job, he didn't move back to town where there were apartments and jobs, but moved into an 8x12 room above a bar with no phone.
By the time the kids and I moved away, he was seeing them one night every 6-8 weeks (because I had to wait for him to call instead of being able to get in touch with him, and I still sent them--sometimes with money--to stay overnight in a room above a bar).
He's finally moving closer to us, but still far enough away that he doesn't have to see them unless he wants to. He didn't call either of my sons on their 8th and 16th birthdays.
He's sent me $300 in three years. And he says he loves his kids.

There is. My ex is one.
I don't think you're grokking what I'm trying to say.
Until men's ability to say no to becoming a father is enshrined in law and custom, no man can actually consent to becoming a father.
If you can't say no, you can't say yes. The end.
Now here's where the rubber meets the road. Are you willing to give up the shaming power of 'deadbeat dad' until such time as men have an equal right to choose fatherhood?

When I decided to divorce
When a woman divorces a man, he has absolutely no further obligation to her, at least in a just world. A man doesn't become a "deadbeat dad" just because you divorce him and thereby push his kids out of his life.

She was certifiable. All it was was "I want another baby, I need another baby, baby baby baby baby" and his reply was "you can't even help take care of the two you have, no" and refused to consider it.
She's not an amazing parent, has her moments and her kids love her (as most kids love/like their mothers) but she has issues that developed after her first kid got born. My guess is a postpartum issue that never got treated, spiraled out of control and leveled off into crazyville. One she refuses to even acknowledge. But I'm not a doctor, I only finished my undergrad in psych. shrug

We don't have enough information to classify this. From the description, this story is about a dad that was scared off and never established contact. He wrote letters, but had no way to know if they were delivered.
I've never been through it, but I'm pretty sure that from the kid's perspective, it's difficult for dad to pull off this disappearing act without consenting to it.
I don't doubt he would have lost custody in court because he's male, but it doesn't sound like it went that far.

My step brother accused my brother of selling him weed when he got caught with it. It was my step brothers and he was dealing on the side, but my step mom wouldn't admit that her darling angel was a dope dealer.
So she told my dad, who kicked out my brother and took her side. My dad and my brother didn't talk for 7 years until my dad found out one day that he'd unfairly blamed my brother.
I took my brothers side and basically wrote off my dad too.
He got divorced because of what happened and other reasons and wound up living in a seniors home close to where I was going to school. I never really went to visit him.
He got sick and we moved him closer to us and we only had a few weeks before he died.
I feel ripped off. I lost my dad because of a vindictive and callous woman. I know not all women are like that but never underestimate the maliciousness of self absorbed people.

Weed isn't really much of a drug, though.

Except that it is. It's fine to do it. It's fine to like it. But don't lie about what it is or is not.
[–]AboutMensRights 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Weed is not a serious drug. Alcohol is a far more harmful drug.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 14 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Technically, it's a drug. But in that vein, a lot of other things should be considered drugs before a plant is.
[–]ordinaryrendition 9 points10 points11 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So, because some things that should be called drugs haven't been classified as such we shouldn't classify weed as a drug either? How about we keep the wrong to a minimum, call weed a drug, and work towards calling those other things drugs too?
I'm also really not sure what those other things could be, but the logic behind not calling weed a drug because other things aren't is just terrible.
So, because some things that should be called drugs haven't been classified as such we shouldn't classify weed as a drug either?
Only if you will admit that caffeine should be classified as an even more dangerous drug.
[–]skotia 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
But in that vein, a lot of other things should be considered drugs before a plant is.
Of course. Most of them are defined drugs too, just that they are legal because their side effects/dependencies are minimal (caffeine), and other reasons such as culture (alcohol).
Caffeine is more dangerous than weed. The most dangerous thing about marijuana is marijuana laws.
[–]skotia 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The side effects of weed is more pronounced and also has more potential to affect decision making; in quantities which are considered reasonable, there are very little side effect. There have been no documented cases of people dying from overdose in THC in it's natural form, but in synthetic THC there have been 4 deaths by the approved FDA drug between 1997 and 2005. That said, caffeine has deaths too, but caffeine has had a much wider timeframe in terms of legal consumption, no regulation, and a somewhat longer history in western consumption. It also plays an arguable role in the productivity of the workforce, widely used in jobs which requires long hours of concentration (e.g. truck drivers). There is also a longer history of cultural consumption in general, starting with caffeine in tea in China over thousands of years and hundreds in western society.
I'm all for legalizing of marijuana, and it's fine if you like it, but there needs to be certain restrictions similar to those placed for alcohol, e.g. driving under influence, working under influence, etc.
Back to the point, both caffeine and marijuana are drugs; so is ethanol (alcohol in drinks). There is a cultural stigma surrounding the use of the word "drug", and this is what needs to be fixed; distancing marijuana from the word "drug" will not work because technically and legally, THC will always be a drug.

[–]loganlocke8995 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's a plant, and it is a drug. A drug is a substance that alters bodily function when consumed. The statement that it isn't a drug because it is a plant or herb is on the same level of ignorance as those that compare it to heroin. I'm not saying it is bad for one's self and the word 'drug' carries a negative connotation, but this phrase is overly-used and incorrect.

My ex tried to keep at least one of our sons away from me. Eventually, I got full custody of both of them.
When our youngest was about 9, she got preggo again, got married, and eventually had a 4th child. Right when she split up with her second SO, I watched her play a game of keep her other two kids away from that father. Very often, they even ended up with me.
Scummy shit.
[–]step1 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Why did they end up with you? I realize you may have had some negative feelings toward the other guy, but considering he was basically in the same boat as you once were, it seems odd that you'd help her out by being a willing 3rd party to her games.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
The arrangements were almost always with my kids, who live with me, so whether it's me or them involved, they end up in my home. I don't particularly like the mother or the father, but it's not about me or them, it's about the kids.
Better to stay neutral. If he had ever contacted me over it, I would have gladly went with his wishes, but in the 8 years he's had a kid or kids with my ex, he's only ever said one thing to me about his kids, and that was to thank me for watching them. Exactly how much he knows about how often his kids have been with me over the years, I have no idea. They're his kids too, so it's on him to take some initiative.
I have to guess, and my guess is he doesn't much give a fuck. I just noticed a big difference for the preceding months and couple of months during their split that the kids ended up with me more than ever. I only know during that time she was trying to keep the kids from him by what they said and what my kids surmised (bit of deja vu, too). For the most part, I don't much communicate with my ex, and I just try to remain neutral.
I have to limit how much I get between our two older boys and her, and her two sons and her. Sometimes it's best just to keep your mouth shut with certain kinds of people for the benefit of their kids. It's complicated, I'll tell you that. It usually is. Today my 23 year old, who lives with me, picked his half brothers up from school, and they ended up at my house. Kids got out early, mom is at work, grandma(her mom) is worn out, grandpa(her dad) is at work, so they ended up at my house.

Probably fake, but I have been through a situation with my ex-wife which for years I would consider to be worse than this one. I also had a friend who went through a situation where his ex moved to another city hours away and he was left with no contact with his young son. He was broke, the new guy was a dentist with deep pockets and they would simply hang up when he called and bury him in legal filings. He put a shotgun in his mouth two years ago over Tanner.
Now, what I will say, is that we do a huge dis-service to any guys we allow to fall into these traps as a group. MRA's should work much harder to elevate men (and their children) caught in these positions. Remember, people like the crew of SRS laugh at men in situations like this, their supposed power and patriarchy mean to them, this is like a racist getting his come-uppance.
