Sure, looks are subjective to a point. The thing is most women find the same kind of men as part of their 1 out of 5 they find attractive. Truth is most women consider the same guys attractive with the same certain physical features. No man is unattractive to every woman (unless he’s super deformed), but for average men the amount of women who find them attractive is much smaller. Not even Chad is attractive to everyone, but he’s attractive to most.

I think you need to differentiate between who she is attracted to and will have non-committal sex with - and who she is attracted to and will eventually settle down with.

The concept of 80/20 is NOT a static concept, is a "could" type of concept, instead of an omnipresent type of concept.

The reason why women are choosy is because there's a lot of men out there, if the same women lived in a closed village of only a hundred men and a hundred women, then you would see the 80/20 rule breaking apart.

Some women would come close to desiring almost all of the men in the village.

Globalization and overpopulation has expanded the horizons for the 80/20 rule. That's it. It's like a balloon, the balloon stays the same size, but the air expands it.

So I live in the greater LA area. Some of my friends invited me to see a show where “hot” men dance, one of those “Magic Mike” theme performances. Sure, they were objectively attractive, but not my type, at all. I was more interested in the camera guy following them around. He was so in the zone, trying to get the right shots and angles. He was probably 5’7” had long hair, wore all black, and looked like he listens to rock, indie, and some alternative music. He probably dates artsy chicks, something I am not. So there you go. Out of all the jacked guys at the show, I found none of them attractive to me.

No, this isn't true. There are certain physical characteristics that are almost universally considered attractive and certain ones that aren't. Height is almost universally considered attractive. Broad shoulders are almost universally considered attractive. Fatness is almost universally considered unattractive (never heard a single woman who finds fat men sexy). The list goes on.

There may be a small amount of subjectivity, but no where near as much as you think. I'd say at least 50% of men are not in any woman's 1 in 5. That's a lot of men who are invisible and/or repulsive to women.

I've met girls who only date band guys and say they hate muscles

I've met girls who only date black guys

I've met some who actually prefer fat dudes (without being fat themselves.)

It seems like they do have a general type and are averse to stepping out of it if the guy doesn't match a certain aesthetic

The wrinkle here is how men encountered in online dating, social media, and even mass media factor into this.

And my take is that it lies on a spectrum. On one end there are the women who think a male Instagram model is just as realistic a possible partner as someone in history lecture; on the other end are women who don't even see men from an online dating site they've had days of texts with as real until they actually meet in person.

And everything in between.

I suppose the 20/80 thing is more to do with memory.

More precisely, the zipfian distribuition of memorization.

We remember things in a zipfian distribuition because of how our neurons work. If one is to rememeber on a random selection of things, it means that a group will remember 80% of the time 20% of the things.

It is just how our perception works.

women care about more than looks and they want a man to be at least average or better in ALL the ways that matter to her.

to keep it simple, if a woman wants a man to be at least average in looks AND money AND status, it's not 50% of the male population who is average or better in all of those ways, it's 50% x 50% x 50% = 12.5%

in the real world it's not quite that bad because those factors aren't completely independent and random. and because different women are looking for different things.

I wouldn't argue life isn't that specific. I rarely find any men attractive. But I also don't notice any unattractive men either daily usually unless they are doing something disgusting. The attractiveness comes through a connection of some sort- commonality- smell or just having the physical characteristics I like (brown hair, smile). But I never look at a man and think gee, he is unattractive.

Not really. There's a lot of things that are statistically plusses across all groups. Being white makes you overwhelmingly favored for both gendered. Tall men are favored. Wearing glasses is generally a minus. A fairly fit build works for a majority.

Once you go through a lift of broad traits that are favored by the majority and have someone who fits that you've cut out a majority of dudes before getting down to who's artsy vs a manly man. Even if an individual woman will compromise on a few and be real she probably is still firm on many or even most of the others.

This isn't even theoretical. I actually went to art school. Most of the women were still into traditionally attractive dudes and I was there when Tinder took off and they all loved talking about it. Yeah a few were into unusual guys but most of the dorky scruffy art guys went home alone while the guys on the sports team or who were well put together or went to the campus gym did better.

You're misunderstanding the 80/20 rule for women. While women will say 20% of men are good looking/above average, women aren't attracted to that whole 20%. Like I can look at a girl and say 'she's a good looking woman' but at the same time I could also say 'I'm not attracted to her'.

On average women only see men they're attracted to between 1%-5% of the male population. I'm saying they're specifically will feel attraction towards guys. Not just acknowledge the guy is good looking.

And each woman's 5% is different from every other's 5%.

however this is highly subjective from woman to woman; an intuitive art ho who’s shy might genuinely find another shy artsy kid (still an attractive one mind you) hot and attractive, but Stacey the outgoing cheerleader is not going to even realize he’s there. But at the end of the day that’s still one of the only dudes she’ll be attracted to because it seems to appeal to her specifically. This goes much further in explaining why certain couples and pair bonds really do work quite well even though the average woman assuredly finds most of the men she meets in day to day life unattractive.

This is a common misconception among men. In reality most women are attracted to the same men: rich guys.

Women just run different games to get rich guys. If you can't be a cheerleader you might go for being an art girl, or a smart girl, or a sports girl, and so on. The end goal is always to get a rich guy.

So why do some girls go for art guys or whatever? There aren't that many rich guys around and girls have to get their bills paid somehow, so women settle with the richest guy that they can reasonably get.

Most women hope to trade up at some point, which is why women dump/divorce men.

I don’t think that men understand that women have extremely varying tastes in men. What one woman thinks is dreamy another thinks is grotesque. Sure there are a some men that 90% of women find attractive but in general many women have a very specific type they go for and there’s a lot of disagreement among women over which men are attractive.

I have so many memories of me and my female friends arguing with each other about what guys we thought were cute. I mean I’ll never understand why so many young women are into k pop boys, how any woman can like long hair, beards, big muscles, or chubby guys, or why weird ass looking dudes like Benedict cumberbatch have female fandoms absolutely obsessed with them.
