The explanations for how dread game works are often conflated with intra-female competitiveness/preselection and jealousy.
I propose a more generalized explanation that's reasonable enough for bpers and rpers alike.
The "dread" being felt by your SO is simply the dread of losing you for whatever reason.
It's human nature to take for granted what we feel we safely and securely own, what we have in abundance. Doing something that puts that comfort into question is one way people will be put to the test on how much they care for you.
How is my generalized definition different? My more generalized version works for more than just implying that you have more options in terms of partners:
- You have a dangerous job. It's passive dread because your partner never knows when you'll come back alive.
- You bought a motorbike, which is something your partner isn't used to. You're nonchalant about it and seem a bit too overconfident for your partner's comfort.
- You start doing drugs.
- You engage in illegal activities or get involved with gangs.
i.e. risky behaviours are another subset of my version of "dread".
Any of the above can just as easily end up pissing off an SO the way playing games / flirting other other women can, but in the short term can put someone's care for you to the test.
The focus is taken away from jealousy and put where it belongs: fear of loss.
...
I'd like to hear thoughts, but I'd especially like to hear examples of how "dread" has changed your relationships, not necessarily just romantic ones.
EDIT: Some people have a difficult time seeing this and are starting to give lectures, so to make this obvious: I'm not prescribing anything here. I am not saying you SHOULD go risk your life to put people to the test.

OMG! What did you get up to? 😱I hope you weren't driving 100 miles per hour in that T without a seatbelt or something!
I think dread works pretty naturally when people keep in good shape and have friends and interesting things going on.
Staying out all night or not showing up places without explanation or saying "out" when asked about where you were is a very cruel thing to do to the other person. The anxiousness and sick feelings can eventually smother all the other feelings of love and affection and kill the relationship.
That's not the same as acting in exciting or unexpected ways that show you in a good way as an interesting and desirable person.

No that'll never work. The example in my comment about dread had to do with when it wasn't warranted to disappear without a word which I know in TRP/MRP scenario it sometimes is. Admit my lack of objectivity of course. As always on the topic.

position of weakness?
if communication is centered around who's weaker and who has more power, rather than two ppl on the same team, your relationship is gonna have a bad time

that's only the case for people that need to feel in control.
its very usual for people to be in a relationship and neither of them need or want control. this is better because people solve conflicts according to what is actually the best solution, not according to the validation of some control complex.

As many here know, I'm polyamorous. In poly communities, there's a concept known as "compersion," which is defined as a feeling of joy and happiness that comes from seeing a loved one fall in love with someone else. It is sometimes described as being "the opposite of jealousy." Not everyone experiences it, just as not everyone experiences jealousy, but it's a frequent topic of discussion on poly forums and at poly meetups.
It wouldn't surprise me if in some cases, the feeling that gets evoked when a RP'er engages in "dread game" isn't dread, but is actually compersion-based happiness. It's probably an ambivalent happiness, considering that in our society there's an expectation that you'll feel jealous if your partner is giving or receiving attention to or from someone else. But I think some of the successes reported by RP'ers working "dread game" may have been, at least in part, because of a positive psychological response rather than a negative one.

Thank you for the compliment. I don't think I'm more evolved than anyone else. Monogamy is right for some people, non-monogamy is right for others. I was fortunate to have some good non-monogamous role models in my life.
