Margaret Thatcher is often forgotten in such discussions, but that's because she was a conservative.

I have no problem with Hillary running for President, I just think she's too old now and has too much baggage. Her time was in 2008, and Obama took that from her. 2008 was a slam dunk for any Democrat, 2016 won't be. I have a lot more respect for Senator Elizabeth Warren anyway.

This sums up my complaint with her:

Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, their fathers, their sons in combat. Women often have to flee from the only homes they have ever known. Women are often the refugees from conflict and sometimes, more frequently in today’s warfare, victims. Women are often left with the responsibility, alone, of raising the children.

I'd dropkick both of them for an Elizabeth Warren administration, or even a Ron Paul administration. Politicians don't have to be liars. We allow them to be.

To me, her being a woman does matter, but only so much as I don't think any man who said something as patently wrong and irrational as "Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, their fathers, their sons in combat." would ever be allowed to become a credible candidate for the United States Presidency.

I think that quote shows me her identity as a woman colors her understanding of the world to such an extreme and illogical degree that it raises some large doubts for me about her fitness for the office of President. (Not that I'd vote for her anyways, but that's an R vs. D thing, not a RP/BP thing.)

I would, however, consider voting for Condi Rice/Susana Martinez/Jan Brewer/Kelly Ayotte if they ran.

I think she's very smart and was that great woman behind a great man. As someone said she can be as cold and calculating as any man. We did have Winnie Mandela, Thatcher, and Indira Ghandi 30 years ago, powerful women aren't that new. Although I think politics are bs anyway and just more hope and lies for the masses.

I dont think the president is in fact a relevant figure, any more than the particular celebrity they're using to advertise Coca Cola is particularly relevant to how the company actually gets run. While executive powers are theoretically large, the scope of what one can actually do with them is shaped by the needs of one's party to pander to business and certain special interests.

I was in my twenties during the Clinton presidency and I recall it differently than you. Hillary was always a polarizing figure, but the notion that a woman could become president was already well-established. Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman VP candidate in 1984. Elizabeth Dole ran in 2000, only four years after her husband.

The 1992 elections were called the Year of the Woman because so many were elected to congress, partly as backlash from the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings.

Also, during this period Colin Powell was becoming very popular, and many thought he would become the first black president. I think he would have, too, but he never ran.

I'm just a little bit older than you and I was shocked that the 2008 race went down to Clinton and Obama. I had a much more dim view of the American populace then and didn't think we were non-sexist or non-racist enough to elect either one of them. I was happy to be proven wrong.

The 80s and to a lesser degree, the 90s were a time of cultural backlash against the second wave of feminism, (and the beginning of the third wave) and I think a lot of the sexist stuff flying around Hillary then had to do with that. Well off white women were making great strides in career and business at the time and it was threatening to a lot of people.

I used to think with that baggage, Hillary wouldn't ever have a shot, she's too decisive a figure. But changing social attitudes plus her incredibly amazing run as secretary of state has changed that I think. Plus after the Bush presidency people are way more nostalgic for the Clinton Years, particularly people our age and older.

Hillary is a dirty politician and her chief tactic recently, I'm almost ten years younger than you, is the "it's the PATRIARCHY!". I promise you she will employ this anytime she can. She deploys troops in Syria, anti war will become anti woman. You don't trust a female commander and chief, you sexist? A member of her party defects on a tax bill, anti tax increase will become anti woman. Her opponent lands raises legitimate issues concerning her completely useless tenure as SOS, they're branded a sexist. And on and on. We will not litigate one important issue during the next election and four to eight years after that. I'd vote Liz warren. Except her stance on GMOs she's legit.

Most women leaders are regarded as being a "bitch" because they confuse male leadership with unrelenting commandment. Most female leaders come off as bitches because they aren't leading like men. They usually follow the rules to the T and ignore the spirit of the rules. They also tend to give fake smiles which pisses people off.

However, Hillary seems to know how to lead the proper way. Her gender is moot, rather it's more about her capacity.

u/Vornash mentioned Margaret Thatcher, but she was pretty unpopular during her stay, which eventually got her ousted. I was surprised by some of the hate I saw on reddit (from Brits, no less!) when she died last year.

During Bill Clinton's presidency, which SpaceWhiskey was talking aboot, Thatcher was out of office, and Helmut Kohl was Chancellor of Germany. Nowadays Angela Merkel has had lots of time to warm the Chancellor's seat with her butt, and she's been pretty popular. I think she has changed the political landscape significantly.

Thorning-Schmidt (Denmark) and Geun-hye (Korea) are more recent arrivals, and Solberg (Denmark) I don't think gets much recognition in the US. This is especially true when you compare Solberg to Merkel. Solberg is only the second female PM in Norway. The first (Brundtland) was PM in the early nineties, and no one in the US much cared. Merkel is much more recognized than any of the others.

So, yeah, the political landscape is a bit different now than it was then.

I respect her for staying with her husband through very trying times, but I do not believe women should hold power. Women make great compliments and helpmeets to men in power, however.
