What are your opinions on the Steubenville rape case? I normally think that SJWs go too far with "victim blaming" accusations but this seemed like a pretty good example for their side.

Since the 2 guys who raped her were football players, the school and a lot of the local community blamed her for situation. Even the media talked about how tragic it was that "2 young promising athletes are having their lives ruined". Do you really not see anything wrong with that?

The problem with your example is you've chosen a scenario that almost never happens. Most people have enough common sense to realize a road trip thru the Middle East isn't the best idea right now. I'd prefer to look at an actual common example of victim blaming in sexual assault cases:

In the United States, one of the most prevalent allegations against female victims of sexual assault is that wearing provocative dress stimulates sexual aggression in men who believe that women clothed in body-revealing dress are actively trying to seduce a sexual partner. Accusations against victims wrongly assume that provocative clothing conveys consent for sexual actions and that the only women who are targets of sexual assault are those who wear attention grabbing revealing clothing. Research has yet to prove that attire is a significant causal factor in determining who is assaulted. There is some evidence that suggests that women who wear more body-concealing clothing are actually at greater risk than women who dress provocatively. It has been found that rapists look for signs of passiveness and submissiveness in their victims. These traits are more often found in women who wear more conservative clothing. By dressing provocatively and exhibiting a degree of confidence, women may be less vulnerable to victimization.

Potential rapists look for opportunity, any opportunity. If you're not rapist you could hang out all night with scantily clad, drunken women with every opportunity to rape one and not feel an ounce of desire to do so. If you do, you might be a rapist.

It is ok for us to blame her for being an idiot. What is not ok is for the law to blame her for being an idiot.

But what we've seen over the past few decades is that these two concepts are not separate. If anything, your takeaway from following how our society deals with rape victims over the past 50 yeras or so and how our legal system deals with rape victims is that the two are connected.

if you contribute to a culture of victim blaming, you contribute to a culture in which rapists are more likely to not be held reponsible for the crime by society. Victims are more likely to be shamed into not reporting the crime, and if they do, they're more likely to not taken seriously.

Yeah, I don't like when people use "victim blaming" as if it's automatically wrong. I generally agree that people should practice "due diligence" in keeping themselves safe. Example: I'd never leave anything expensive in my car overnight, especially if if it was in plain sight. I'd also never take my bike anywhere without locking it up - there are too many bike thieves around. Also, don't drive drunk.

At the same time, I suspect that people have different ideas about what constitutes "due diligence". Personally, I tend to me relatively slow to blame women for sexual violence committed against them.

Everyone agrees that victim blaming is acceptable, people just disagree about when. If somebody yelled insulting things and got beaten up for it, people would happily victim blame him.

I originally wrote a long and frankly disturbing story that highlights how one could trust another person--y'know go to hell and back and all that--and after, say a few months of being friends the one rapes the other at a party, but I'll just leave it at this tl;dr. Situations are always dynamic and the injection of hindsight into a situation that's already so individual is, quite simply, ignorant.

"You shoulda known better than to wear that outfit around that BOY!"

"Well I've worked with this boy for a year and wore plenty of stuff like this around him during the time we hung out and passed out in his bed from partying may times before. He didn't rape me any of THOSE times!"

Situations are always ridiculously dynamic and, just short of not allowing her to go out (which I know you TRPers are fond of doing), there is NO WAY you could predict such a thing happening after both parties share such humanity with each other so many times before.

That's a very extreme dichotomy. How do you stand on the woman who is snatched and raped walking home from work? Is it her fault for being alone? (A chaperone to and from work is needed) For wearing corporate attire that looks attractive? (Burqua, anyone?) For commuting outside of daylight hours? (Curfew for women here we come). Because that sounds a bit like the state that this woman is being castigated for traveling through.

There was a thread at /r/punchingmorpheus which devolved into an argument about accountability and the justification for expecting caution:

I argued that it would be reasonable to expect from people who engage in a potentially risky behavior that they make sure to minimize that risk, but for some this was apparently too much to ask.
