Read about the details of the fall of Rome. It's super interesting in the context of parallels to today's western culture. Especially the parallels to the spread of feminism, female hypergamy, no fault divorce, male withdraw from society, corruption becoming widespread in government, etc. The communication age has created a kind of accelerated fall of Rome. The only thing I can see delaying or avoiding the inevitable is anonymous communication made possible by the internet. What is your background view of human behavior that makes this such a conundrum?

We evolved, we have many traits that are adaptive and many to pass on our genes but not every action or behavior will be adaptive. In fact, most of what we do is only shaped by the demands of survival and reproduction in the very broad outlines.

One thing a kind of crude Darwinism always forgets is how social we are. Our survival as a species depends on a huge amount of social interaction and a huge amount of what we do is confined to that and it is ENDLESSLY variable how we connect with others, bond with them, live and get along with them, etc.

There is a truly huge amount of non-reproductive sexual activity among animals as well. So the background assumption all sex has the purpose of reproduction doesn't even make sense if you're just talking 'biology'

First I'd like to say, there has been some surprisingly deep talk in here, regardless of the one-liners.

Secondly, you're trying to wrap your head around something that we don't quite fully understand yet. The animal part of our brain that drugs us with chemicals to elicit a response doesn't have to and will not explain itself to the elegant brain, the part of our brain where our ethics, morals, and philosophies reside.

You are an incredibly complex thinking creature that attempts to put reason into all of it's actions, in essence justifying your existence (and right to exist) to yourself. We all want to be the good guy, that's part of being human. Nobody wants to be the villain, so we apply our morals and ethics in a way that fits with what we are doing. At the end of the day though, sex feels good, we're smart enough to know it feels good and know how to avoid some of the consequences, but we're still essentially trying to tame a lion by reciting Yeats when we attempt to rationalize these impulses. It's just what that part of our body and brain was designed to do.

Because women make the call, and everybody wants a go, it's immediately obvious why there are bitter men, bitter older women, and everybody's just grumpy in general.
