Why should we care about the differences between men and women?

On the google dude who got fired's memo, he said that if the goal is to attract more women into programming, they had to understand why women weren't attracted.

So the assumptions are that 1) the environment doesn't encourage them, which he said was already WIP, 2) women are generally more neurotic, which implies that they're more into "who" than "what" and are then less likely to be attracted by such job.

He then proposes that in order to attract more women into programming, they should induce more social interactions into the job. One idea is to introduce pair programming: instead of working lonely on your program, you work as two people on it. The cost is higher, but the error generated are more scarce.

This is probably not applicable though, but this is an example of why caring about the differences can be useful.

On another aspect, not caring about the differences just means that you consider the environment to be the one and only responsible of the differences, which can lead an extreme to another.

IMO, we should stop spending money and time on bad discrimination that aims at blindly and illegitimately at solving lack of diversity or inequalities. If you don't care about the differences, you also don't care about the consequences. If you care about the consequences, you better study well their origins.

Because their differences affect how they perceive the world and interact with others. Women tend to be more emotional, for various hormonal and social reasons. That does not mean men do not have emotions.

Let's look at group averages between women and men:

Men tend to be better at focusing like a laser, but this also means they sometimes don't hear people talking to them. Women are better at managing many things at once.
Men are more logical. Women are less logical but more emotional. A good programmer is highly logical. Computers are frustrating, I'm a programmer. It does not help for me to get mad at the computer when it's ~~not~~ my fault I don't know all the details of what is happening.
Women tend to be better at customer service, interacting with people, and interacting with kids. That doesn't mean there aren't men who can't be a good babysitter.

I knew some good women programmers at college. They proved they could do it.

As far as the military goes, most men cannot pass basic training, and they know that and that's why they don't apply in the first place. But only 1 in 30 women pass basic training. They can't shoot as well as men and can't carry heavy items for long distances like men.

Assuming men and women are clones is ridiculous. I still think everyone should have equal opportunity in most things, but the women's performance in the military is overall, pretty dismal.

We shouldn't. If a woman wants to be a programmer and a man wants to be a teacher there should be nothing holding them back. But we shouldn't try to remedy disparities that have biological origins by pushing the notion that men and women are the same.

People make generalizations because that is how we evolved as a species, in order to overcome these generalizations we need to study and understand those groups. When you study those groups, you see differences between the groups and the individuals in those groups.

Because without such research, the politically correct assumption is that any group outcome disparity is a result of either socialization or discrimination. This has consequences on affirmative action policy.

you shouldnt care about we. you should care about your own experience. you can choose to go through life pretending everyone is the same by default and then its all environment, but you wont be as effective imo. especially with romance and raising children

IMO we should stop spending money on social scientists that study useless stuff like that, I don't see any use for those kinds of studies (i.e. difference between A and B type studies) except for pushing agendas)

Who is "we?" Laziness? I doubt there's one answer to that anyway.

Firstly, we should care what reality is. If that identifies similarities or differences, so be it. We should be motivated to know the truth, not push agendas. Secondly, understanding what differences exist between men and women will help inform what decisions we make regarding all manner of things, such as how we administer medication, what normative standards we set in different areas, how we organise and deliver education and what various other social policies look like.

Feminists would like to create normative standards that favour gynocentric proclivities, then identify them as human standards, since in their view there are no profound biological differences between men and women. If they are successful, this would lead to a more unpleasant, restrictive and unhappy existence for men. We are already seeing this in the education system where young boys are failing in school and are being put on Ritalin because they are not sufficiently docile and obedient like the girls. They are seen as defective, when they are just normal boys.

Of course, if feminists do not like the standards that men set, they describe them as oppressive and misognistic.

Also, relationship standards in the West are currently based on a gynocentric model, rather than a model designed to satisfy the distinct preferences of men and women. This leads to a lot of relationship problems and unhappiness for both. If we knew more about how men and women differ, expectations would be more realistic and disillusionment would be less likely to emerge. A couple would also be able to strike a fairer balance that better addressed the needs of both parties.
