this probably scares men off.

What "scares men off" is women thinking men are scared by their majors... they're not. Men are not "intimidated", "scared", or any other shaming words you can think of to put the blame on men. The issue isn't math, science, intelligence or money. The issue is the type of women who are in those careers who think that anyone who earns less than them is beneath them. If you don't do that, then you should be fine.

Women are perfectly capable of being educated. Being intelligent doesn't scare men off. It's the attitude that some educated women have that does it. It's okay to have drive and passion outside of the home, but remember home is where the heart is.

As long as you don't shove your degree into someone else's face and act superior things will be hunky dory.

My sister is an engineer and is very girly-girl feminine; if you are scaring men off, it probably isn't your major/career.

I work with a very feminine engineer. She wears skirts every day; I've only see her wear workout capris at the end of the day when she's going to ride her bike home. She always looks great - heels and everything. Her attitude seems very feminine - she isn't overly loud or obnoxious or anything. I also work with other women engineers who are pretty feminine - it works! The men treat them with a lot of respect. If you're good at math and science (I'm not, but always wished I could be! more power to you!), just do it! :)

Are you kidding? You'll be in class with 90 percent guys! If you just try to be as attractive as possible, they'll be standing in line for you and you'll have the best pick.

Honestly, it's not a problem. My brother married a fellow engineer, who has a very 'masculine', analytical, technical mind, but is also soft-spoken, feminine and classy. His best friend also married an engineer, a pretty, generous, fun-loving girl.

Having an authentic passion can only make you more attractive wife material. Good luck!

There seems to be some sort of misconception floating around here on RPW; women can enjoy any educational topic, sport, or traditionally masculine activity in the world! That isnt the issue. The issue only really arises when the woman in question adopts masculine personality traits such as swearing, being abrasive, too forward, rude, outspoken, and the like. You know, when they try to be 'one of the boys'.

Surely any man will be impressed that a smart, beautiful lady has a deep interest in math and science! You get on with your bad self, girlfriend.

I work in engineering and, based on my experience, it is intelligence that is valued over all else. There are a few ball busters (men and women) but they don't do well because engineers tend to have similar personality types and that is NOT IT.

Most importantly for you though, this is the only job I've ever had where literally everyone is married and no one gets a divorce. I wouldn't worry about it!!

The degree is a plus - coming from an engineer, STEM women are generally awesome. They've done better in couples than most other women I've known. Just don't collect the feminist, careerist baggage that a lot of women collect and you're fine.

Not sure how long you've been in school, but it shouldn't have taken long to notice that engineers have a very high proportion of men prone to beta-orbiter behavior. Just the nature of things. You can lose points by either treating them like crap, or by keeping them in orbit intentionally. You can gain a lot of respect from a more alpha, socially well-adjusted man by handling the orbiters with care - don't entertain their white knight fantasies, don't take advantage of their generosity, and don't trash-talk them. Other men may look down on orbiters, but decent men understand that the guys mean well and that they're just following the only strategy they know.

Can't really give you specifics, how you handle an orbiter is going to depend on the guy and the circumstances. You might have to step up and make a firm NO that hurts his feelings in the short run but helps him in the long run, and you might have to do it early; you might just have to refrain from talking about your dating life with him. Use your judgment.

I am about to graduate with a BS in mechanical engineering, and it is completely possible to stay feminine and be an engineer at the same time.

The answer is pretty simple... why do men want a woman? The short-term answer is sex. The long-term answer is to start a family. It doesn't really matter what you do, how smart you are or how much money you make. I personally fond intelligence in a girl attractive and it won't be hard for you to find a guy on your level.

But make sure that as you enter your career path that you always remain feminine and family-oriented. These 2 traits are some of the most important to man and they are often lost with career women. Don't lose what you used to attract the guy in the first place (your femininity) and make sure that you always put your family and your husband first.

Just posting in here to echo what everyone else has already said. Being good at math/science is definitely not a negative point that will "scare men off"; in fact, it shows that you are intelligent and that's a very positive quality to most men! I'm an electrical engineering sophomore who enjoys tinkering with electronics (including Arduino microcontrollers) and some coding, and I've never met any guy who's been 'intimidated' by my major or hobbies, even though they may be considered traditionally masculine. If you truly enjoy your major, then go for it by all means! :)

Something I overheard a girl say to her friends back in college: "a girl that would normally be average is considered hot in engineering". She was right. Those sex ratios are extremely favorable.

No, quite the opposite. The kind of independent, smart and successful men that you probably want to attract are going to be super interested in women who are in STEM fields. I would personally love to find a women interested in something like engineering. One thing to keep in mind is that women like you are extremely rare in the circle of men looking for this, so you have HUGE sexual market value. It's just a numbers game and women once again are at an advantage.

You will probably end up earning more than your man. No matter what many women say here every now and then a post will pop out talking about a deadbedroom and it usually involves a man earning less than the woman (although it takes a while to come out as it's not seen as a problem first).

Make sure your SMV is high enough to find a man with a higher or at least equal status than you, which means graduate QUICK and get married early. You can start working after this if your worry is to lead a happy love life. The wall doesn't wait and what's left as you approach closer are men who probably don't earn much.

Do your best to be feminine and good looking, both inside and outside as you'll have a higher competition.

Hypergamy isn't something that RPW are shielded by.

Something to think about.. Men are not "scared" of your major, at least not any that you will want to attract.

Marriage minded men will consider your major to be a boost, however if you dead set on a career instead of being a SAHM it will be a negative in their eyes.

High earning alpha type guys have no use for another income since they already earn enough to live a very nice life. They are looking for a partner to build a family unit with. This means they need a woman that wants to raise kids, be their voice at PTA meetings, represent the families interests in the community, and keep up the home. Your ability to accomplish these things is either entirely removed or greatly diminished if you are running the corporate rat race.
