How should I approach makeup?

Joking aside, men have different opinions about this. Even I as a single man have 2 minds about it. I want a girl who is low upkeep and I like natural overall, but I certainly still get turned on by girls with enhanced features more than if they wore none. Sorry for being unhelpful. :)

I will never understand guys and makeup.

I attracted my fiance with my female deception, and now he is all about me being natural. I look tired when I don't wear make up.

I totally agree about the false lashes and contouring. You can recognize me without my make up on, lol. I wear cover up, foundation, blush, mascara, eyebrow filler and eyeliner. That's it. Not even sure shadow on a normal day. It's minimal but I enhance the good parts (nice eyebrows, blue eyes) and cover up my under eye bags and even out my skin tone.

The goal I think, should be to present your best version, while still being able to recognize yourself in and out of make up.

Makeup, when done right, is as much false advertising as it is when a dude gets a slick fade done at the barber shop.

Honestly some women go ALL OUT with the makeup with the contouring and what have you and I have to say, I have yet to meet a man who's looking to be with a girl who makes him want to wash his face after a kiss.

As MsSadieDunham said, it's all about still being recognizable as YOU without your makeup on. Just the best version of you :) For me, I usually just go with a bit of blush, mascara, eyebrow filler and lip balm. However, right before my period, cover up and foundation are a GOD SEND as my skin tends to get a bit splotchy and I have trouble sleeping so it covers up the undereye bags. I'm not hiding or attempting to change the fundamental shape of anything, just enhancing what's already there.

That being said, I think there is something to be said about the fact that a lot of men say they don't want a girl that's "high maintenance". And to them I think that means they don't want a girl whose beauty routine will interfere with their life together. Your man isn't going to appreciate your Kardashian-esque face if he had to wait two hours for you to get ready. He's not going to be into it if you're so afraid of sweating off your contouring that you won't go for a hike.

Keep it light, keep it simple and make sure that in the end your face is recognizable as your face :)

I see "makeup" in the same way I see "fitness"

There is, IMHO, an emotionally healthy approach to fitness and an emotionally unhealthy approach to fitness.

I used to work with a very heavy woman who was very insecure about her body image and her looks and wanted to be very fit simply to attract men/impress people because she needed external validation. It was soul crushing for her to "dress up" and get not one single compliment during the day. She wanted to IMHO get fit for the wrong reasons. It was not for her, her health nor coming from a place of self love. It was an extension of her insecurity and rage. And she failed at fitness and her fitness goals because deep down she resented the fact that no one accepted her for her ( while the major issue was likely she simply did not accept herself period)

A healthy approach to fitness is when it's done as an extension of loving and valuing yourself given the time and place. You accept you for who you are, and accept that you have flaws like everyone else and all you can do is make the most of what you have. Fitness works when it's an extension of good self esteem and good emotional boundaries with others and with yourself.

Do you want to wear make up to feel better about yourself?

Do you want to wear makeup because its an EXTENSION of your positive self esteem and valuing yourself?

My answer, its better to feel better about yourself first, then wear makeup if it suits you as an extension of that positivity. It's a much better deal than putting on makeup to secure some type of external validation.

What is it you want? Most women want commitment from a man they want and find attractive and who fits their needs and goals.

Men you don't find attractive? Who cares what they think. About anything relating to what they find attractive or not. You don't want to date them, marry them or breed with them, so their opinion should mean absolutely zero.

Men you find attractive and want to date who won't commit to you? Who cares what they think? If you want commitment, then what they want is not in line with what you want and if their only goal is to bed you, they'll say whatever they think they need to say to do that, so their opinion should mean absolutely zero.

Men you want and will commit to you, now you can start considering the value of their opinion on what they find attractive. Because what they find attractive directly impacts your interaction with them.

If you don't love and value yourself, you will never find anyone who will love and value you as a mate. That's true for everyone out there. If you love and value yourself, you'll do things in line with that positivity in your life. You'll increase your odds to draw in a person who will do the same and be the same in terms of value and mindset.

Someone who loves you for you, who loves you as much as you love yourself, is not going to hang their hat on your looks. To them, if you are the right girl, you'll be the most beautiful woman in the whole world. Makeup or not.

If someone needs external validation to feel good about themselves, the person they are really deceiving out of a good life is themselves.

I skip the eye-liner, not my thing. And my brows are defined enough without adding to them. But I love the little bit of contouring and the eyes. I had no idea contouring had been around so long!

I'm big on subtlety and I don't wear it daily. When I do, you can't tell. I think that's the key. It should enhance, not alter.

Makeup can be fake but it isn't inherently fake.

Unless you believe in being a pure nudist who always presents themselves to the world in their most pure, naked-as-the-day-you-born self. For everyone else, clothing, demeanor and yes, makeup are ways of presenting ourselves to the world.

The way you present yourself to the world has an impact on your thoughts and feelings. Dress lazy and you're likely to feel lazy, dress confident and you're likely to feel more confident, dress like a clown and....

Having given that whole preface, on to the actual point regarding my opinion on makeup.

1) Be appropriate for the setting. A ton of makeup done by a professional is good for weddings, it's too much for every day. No makeup is good for a factory floor but may not be appropriate for an office setting (unless your skin is awesome and truly doesn't need anything)

2) Accentuate, don't recreate. This is very important. You want the makeup to highlight your beautiful features that already exist. You want those features to be even more beautiful. Using makeup to become someone who you aren't is fakery in my opinion.

3) If your daily makeup application takes more than a few minutes, you're wasting your time. If it costs a considerable amount of money, you're wasting your money. See point 2 ^

I can't speak to the official RPW stance, but I can tell you my personal makeup approach.

I have three different makeup looks:

Natural/Invisible. This is my most common makeup style. I use it basically to mask imperfections and very very slightly enhance my look. I never use foundation on my entire face, I have pretty good skin in general but I have genetic dark circles under my eyes (always have) so I expertly blend a bit of concealer and foundation right under my eyes to eliminate that. I leave the rest of my face fairly bare except for a bit of benefit highlighter on the apples of my cheeks. I have fair skin, so I add on some matte skintone colored eyeshadow to take away the appearance of any veins/darkness on my eyelids. Then I add on a very modest amount of mascara on top and bottom lashes. I'm blessed with perfect eyebrows and my hair is very thick and dark brown, so I don't have to fill them in at all, just shape them (if you have thin brows learn to fill them in NATURALLY, and not so you look like a crazy eyebrow monster). Most men would not know I am wearing makeup with this look, and it's my everyday go to. Just chapstick on the lips (carmex brand).
My second look is a little dressier. It's all the same stuff from the first look, but I add a bit of a colored (but still natural) eyeshadow. I like shadows that are very close to my skintone (or bronze) but with a bit of shimmer or richness. Then I add in a bit of black eyeliner, not crazy dramatic liner, just a bit at the edges to make my lashes appear slightly thicker/more dramatic. My eyes are my most striking feature (bright green), so I play them up. Then, I add a tiny bit of lip color, about two shades more saturated than my own natural lip color. That's it. This is my formal look.
Girl's Night Look. When I go out with my girlfriends I'm not trying to look attractive to men because I'm married. I take girl's nights as an opportunity to really experiment with makeup that's fun but not so hot to guys. Those are the times I'll go for winged eyeliner, or a bright red lip, or something else that's just fun and for me (not for the husband) or something new I'm trying out for the first time. This look happens maybe once/twice a month.

FWIW, I never do contouring, fake lashes, colored contacts, extensions, or that kind of thing. I remember in college being in class with a girl who was so made up that when I ran into her in the dorm showers I literally didn't recognize her. I still look very much myself, even with my "heaviest" makeup on, I just look like the best version of myself. I get the most male attention from randoms when I wear the Invisible makeup look, followed by the formal look, and last place is my girl's night look, so that may be worth noting if you're single and looking.

Would you say that growing some muscle is a form of male deception? (I wouldn't, it's just maximising their potential in terms of physical looks, I'd argue makeup is in the same category.)

I'm going to copy what I said elsewhere:

I'd recommend going to a pro for advice what suits you best and what you need to buy. (All you need is one session, after that you can watch the right tutorials on YT).

It needs kind of a casual pro who is not following the trends at all costs (so no hyper-posh hyper-fashionable place, just some run of the mill retail person who will actually look at your face and tell you what will suit you and then do the makeup and ask you for opinions, you will say what you like what you don't like or what feels too much, they'll adjust it and in the end of the day they'll sell you some of the products and everybody will be happy). This works very well for me.

I personally love slightly heavier eyeliner and the high-dollar/boutique-type false lashes. I think they are incredibly sexy when done correctly. Obviously, over-doing either of those things can look a little trashy. But I love my SO's "going out" look, which tends to feature a little heavier eye, with light contouring, and bare lips.

I may get hammered for this, but I tend to believe that guys who "claim" they don't want their SO to wear any makeup are doing so out of insecurity. I don't believe I have ever seen a woman who didn't look better with at least some makeup on.

At 19 you shouldn't need to pile on the makeup anyway. Clear healthy skin, Maybe a tinted sunscreen/moisturiser, dab of mascara and gloss and you'll look lovely.

Try to look as natural as possible. My dad always told me to not wear makeup. I do because of my acne and discoloration. If I didn't have any of that, I wouldn't wear makeup.

If you're like me and have redness on your chin, around your nose, and under your eyes (purpleness), use a foundation or concealer to cover it up. Also use some bronzer to warm your cheeks up.

You might also want to use a translucent or tinted powder to prevent oiliness and to give your face a nice finish.

Mascara and brown eye liner (it's much more subtle than black) are also a good decision. Some metallic/shimmery brown eye shadow usually looks nice, too.

I also like to use tinted lip balm to enhance my lips a bit.

Favorite brands for foundation, concealer, and powder: Make Up For Ever, Clinique. If you aren't acne prone, meaning your skin won't freak out at drugstore products, Rimmel and e.l.f. are good.

I like Covergirl "black brown" pencil eyeliner. The kind you sharpen. Any really dark brown eyeliner is good.

Mascara: Maybelline, Rimmel.

Bronzer: Lots of companies have good ones. I use Kevyn Aucoin (expensive brand) but Rimmel's are pretty good too.

Lip balm: Many, many brands have good ones.

Generally speaking, NYX and e.l.f. are both great brands that are cheap.

I never wear makeup (except on special occasions) and even then I just go with thin eyeliner, mascara and a pretty lipstick.

I don't wear foundation because no matter how I put it, it looks cakey. I never wore false eyelashes but could on a wedding or extremely once in a lifetime kind of event. I can't and don't want to contour.

Long answer short: wear basic makeup, don't layer foundation with bb cream and don't go overboard with anything on your face.
